GREETINGS TIME TRAVELER, BEHOLD MY ANCIENT MAP PROJECT

Recommended Posts

Hello Doomworld! I've made a few WADs before, but this is the first one that seems (key word there) to be presentable. I hope to, eventually, have at least 10 or 15 maps, possibly a full 32, but let's take things one step at a time...

Anyway, here are some pictures and a download link for the first three maps:

Contains a MAPINFO lump for level names but besides that it should be compatible with vanilla Doom II. Edit: It is not, in fact, compatible with Doom II yet. Stand by.

I would like feedback in... pretty much any area. So far I've only had one person testing it, and apart from that only really have my own preconceived notions as to how a map should look and feel... In short, expect the worst.

The screenshots have a really nice classic look to them, in the fashion of a clean 90s map. I'm not sure I like the look of the big sprite-based moon boulders though.

Thanks! Any suggestions on what I could do to make the boulders look better? Making them just sectors would be a bit crude. Perhaps simply scale the sprites down a bit?

Nice wad with unusual theme and interesting layouts. New textures add a lot to the maps. Unfortunately it is not vanilla compatible because you added new graphics incorrectly (look for tutorials), and also because you use S1\SR doors and lifts with zero tags which usually break the whole map. (in vanilla Doom, zero tag on a S1\SR line means that the action applies to ALL non-tagged sectors)

One thing I didn't like is how you place ammo. Looking for ammo is a big part of the fun for me, but you give me many boxes right at the start. Don't you think it would be more interesting if the player had to look and fight for them?

Alright, thanks for the input. I'll change around the ammo placement and tag the S1/SR sectors. Which graphics are broken?

The graphics are okay, what's broken is PNAMES and TEXTURE1 lumps in your wad. You probably did something wrong when you added them. What program do you use? Does it know where you doom2.wad is located?

I used SLADE, and I -think- it knows where doom2.wad is but I'll double check.

Edit: ah, yeah...I found what was wrong. I hadn't had a base resource archive selected. I'll reupload after I finish MAP04 and play around with ammo placement.
