Lost souls have no "wake up" sound

Recommended Posts

I was just playing a bit today and noticed that lost souls don't "wake up". Anyone else notice this? I think that might be why I find them so dangerous and annoying since you never know when one might sneak up on you.

Adds to the eeriness of them in my opinion.
Say you met one in real life. I'd be less creeped out if it growled at me than rather than just stared at me blankly.
Before charging at me and killing me of course.

I find this a rather nice property of the Soulness. They're the one monster you can sneak into an area and have the player never know they just woke someone up. ;)

They have a corpse, though. I never understood that.

Left over from (much) earlier versions of the game, when they shattered into a heap of bone shards.

I've always wanted to see a version of the lost soul that breathed fire on you, like somehow redirecting its "exhaust" to flame you in the face.

Doom2 has been out for going on twenty years now and you just noticed this? :P

Y'know I think someone should make a mod that deletes all the wake up sounds, that would make the game that much scarier.

Make sure to also delete the stupid growl sounds...

Or just, you know... turn your speakers off.

Oh this! I've done this so many times.

You should all try this, wayyyyy scarier.

Better idea:

Replace all the sounds with that stupid growl sound, including the music.

This was the only way I could play it back in the early days of Doom. My old 486 didn't have a soundcard, and after the novelty beeps and boops of the PC speaker started making my ears bleed profusely in protest, three years of silenced Doom began.

Then I got a new PC and said 'fuck all that', and have played with sound ever since.
