trying the organic stuff

i'm currently jerking around with some organic level designs. usually not my thing. i prefer more symetrical designs although i know this limits my creative process.

so, i wanted to break this creative barrier by doing some radical designs. the doom editor allows for fast and easy manipulation of vertexes which makes organic structures relatively easy.


(can you see what this is supposed to be?) :)

now, bare in mind, i am not a painter. i can set vertexes and move them arount but i can't draw people or faces or anything like this. architecture is what i do. so, you might imagine how difficult it was for me to create this.

take this as a teaser. tomorrow i'll upload some more pictures in 3d mode. took maybe 4 hours, maybe more. drawn free hand, without reference but you'll get the inspiration. ;)

This reminds me of those olds maps in the "XXX" section of idgames, the ones that sometimes have crude pictures of naked girls on the wall and all that stuff.

This is pretty funny, I'm interested to see how it plays.

EDIT: From the title, I thought this was going to be about someone's first time mapping while high or something.

My first thought was that the author is trying some fleshy hell style for the first time. Then I thought that it's about weird angles and stuff.

I'm not sure how I felt when it turned out to be about Princess Fiona in lingerie.

i had to look up princess fiona. (even though i watched shreck 2 almost ten times. :D )though, i tend more to this:

i got the initial inspiration from something like this though:

so, actually it's not supposed to be a woman's behind but the bikini is VERY small. :)

first i wanted the upper area to look something like this, to simulate a decollete.

didn't look too well though. came up with something else but everything's still pretty much work in progress and messing around.

it's not my first map though. i started very early with build (duke nukem 3d), tried a lot on the way until radiant was released for quake 3. used it for years, jedi outcast was released and i actually got decent in building single room duel maps, long break, got into it again with doom 3.

and now i'm back to the roots, discovering more and more cool stuff in doom (that i never mapped for before). after just a few weeks i can use scripts and manipulate the decorate file to basicly create a total conversion or anything i can think of. i can build my own game mechanics, my own monster encounters. i find this quite awsome.

and the beauty of doom is it's simplicity. i'm just trying to quote this: "doom just gives you the right amount of visual fidelity to start your imagination." it's like in horror movies where pitch black scenes are more frightening that the actual monster. it's your imagination that makes you fear.

in doom, as an example, the fireballs and the overall feel and animations of the game still make me physically react in my chair when i try to dodge them. that's what i find fascinating.

there are three layers btw. one the map, top right is the bottom, top left is the top level. the acid thing in the center is the middle level.

Interesting shapes and curved architecture, reminds me of Chris Wright's maps a bit. He was a really cool mapper.

Really, who DIDN'T try to draw a naked figure in a doom editor at some point, assuming they started mapping at the appropriate age?

I'm pretty sure there was also a goatse-automap wad submitted to newstuff at some point.

The in-level screenshots look great though.

really? i like borders. i use them basicly everywhere. they need to get a little thinner though. i'm currently working with a 8x grid. the grids on the shots need to at least be on a 4x grid.

@mrthejoshmon, yea, kind of got a bit lucky there. never would have thought that a woman's body can make such a cool design. it already starts to feel really awsome but maybe that's just because i built it and i'm kind of proud. :) dunno.

what i like is the different height levels. right now, you get teleported onto the torso which is the bottom of the room (there is also a door at the bottom). you need to run up both legs to get to the top level where you can access a door to the next room.

there's also a door on the middle layer that will lead into a cellar kind of thing. already started something. it's going to get deep, moody and claustrophobic. :D

"Trazadone" looks quite interesting and reminds me to h.r. giger. also, "Huffing Gas" and "Morphine IV".

I'm pretty sure no one but the most depraved automap pervert would find this titillating. It's purely for flavour and jokes.

Now if it were a Cyberdemon's behind... all bets would be off.
