What is your favorite Duke Nukem game? Also a question.

Recommended Posts

I like Duke Nukem games, not as much as Doom or Marathon, but it comes close. Now to my understanding, Duke had a few different games released in different styles, 1, 2 and Manhattan project being side scrolling games, Duke Nukem 3d and addons, Duke Nukem Forever as well as total meltdown + the N64 port of duke 3d were FPS games, Time to kill and Land of the Babes being third person shooters/adventure games (I don't know of all the duke games so tell me any I missed while I am at it).
Overall my personal favorite Duke game would have to be Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, the main reason being the music and the many settings that take place, even though its like controlling a tank top wearing brick!
This leads me to the question: Were the Duke Nukem: Time to Kill and/or Land of the Babes ported to the PC, or do I have to emulate them?
Also as the title suggests, what is your favorite Duke game?

Of the ones I played all the way through:

  1. 3D
  2. Manhattan Project
  3. Time to Kill
All very good games however. I also played part of Land of the Babes (wasn't amazing, IIRC) and Forever. I don't understand all the shit that DNF got actually. The two weapon thing was a pain in the ass, but I didn't think it was too bad a game.

The only time DNF really annoyed me was the driving segments, other than that and the god forsaken hive levels, I did not need to see anything in those levels but its too late for that, I found the game enjoyable, hard but enjoyable.

Do you mean the bit where Duke was shrunken down and drove the toy car? I loved that bit. I think I only played until after the fight with the Battlelord (not too impressed with what they did to him actually). I think I remember an Assault Commander turning up at some point. But it was a good game, though I found flying Assault Troopers extremely annoying and hard to hit.

I would've like to have seen other DN3D monsters make an appearance though. How dare they leave out the Sentry Drone, Protector Drone, and the RECON PATROL VEHICLE

The protozoids would've made a neat decorative addition, but I don't really care about them.

i was referring to a part with a monster truck called the mighty boot, good lord that was tedious, on no you have ran out of gas AGAIN, that about three times and finalized with you losing the truck in a river or something like that.

I'm going to be "that guy" and say the original Duke Nukem platformer. It's really a classic from an older, more innocent era of PC gaming, when (no doubt due to the lingering influence of arcade games) cans of coke and turkey legs were somehow plausible health power-ups. I think that Duke and Commander Keen really define that era.The graphics are also pretty impressive considering the entire game is 16 colors.

Duke3D was a more-than-worthy sequel (certainly better than Duke Nukem II). I haven't played any of the others.

Unfortunately I never got a copy of the first few Duke games, this thing I am on would also refuse to run them, even on dosbox :(

3D
II
NUKUM

Every other game is shit. The console exclusive 3rd person perspective games were shit. Duke Forever had some inspiring moments, but totally buried in shit.

The majority of people probably played through the Duke games in their intended sequential order. As for me, however, I was introduced to the series in 1996 through Duke Nukem 3D. So I got to experience the classic prequels only after beating the 3D one.

I was turned off from Duke Nukem I because it completely lacked any form of background music whatsoever, and also because the gun which shot the squiggly-green confetti didn't add to the appeal either. So after playing a few levels I didn't even bother to finish the rest. The only thing that I truly loved in that game was the "Energizer bunny" sprite.

Duke Nukem II really wooed me over with the persistent upbeat music, the impressive sci-fi guns, the teleporters, and the spacecraft-hijacking scenes. It was the best bundle of features that I could possibly ask for! I really really love this game and I keep returning to it for brief nostalgic sessions.

Duke Nukem 3D impressed me with the fact that it was even more technologically advanced than DOOM back in that old day before the source-ports came out. And it also impressed me with the bundled level-editor which opened up a totally new world by providing me with a very unique and educational experience. (Shame that ID didn't bundle DOOM with an editor and forced me to go searching for one many years later.) Launching custom-made maps was also much easier in this game than it was in DOOM... But, of course, this was back in the ancient days. Nowadays, I'm expert enough to launch both MAPs and WADs without any problems, and both MAPs and WADs are finally looking equally advanced in terms of their architecture.

DNF was something that I was very excited about and interested in at first. (You know, back in 1998 and 1999 before the stupid Half-Life and the stupid Call of Duty changed the standards and just totally ruined everything.) As the years dragged on and the project kept getting delayed and the industry was becoming filled with more and more repulsively unattractive garbage, I began to lose my faith in this being a good game worth getting. And as soon as I saw that it turned out to be some kind of rebooted fusion of the prequels rather than an official sequel to the previously established storyline then I lost hope completely. I'm not going to get this game at all. No thanks.

In conclusion, I utterly adore both Duke Nukem II and Duke Nukem 3D. Got nothing else left to say on the subject.

I kinda miss that too in a way. Especially since Doom: BFG Edition changed the red cross medical kits into pills, implying that the doomguy is popping painkillers every time he picks one up, as opposed to using bandages and gauze or whatever first aid implies. It's a little troubling for me that many games use drugs and anesthetics on the fly, with no intention of reminding players that these types of things can be abused, be harmful when used in excess, can give users a feeling of dependency.

Not to sound like a soccer mom, but I grew up with understanding that you shouldnt be putting all that kinda stuff in your body, and now it's used pretty regularly by characters in video games like as if it were drinking water. Unlike our older video game heroes that lived off of steaks, chicken breasts, chocolate bars and apples.

Try playing Duke Nukem for the GBA; it's a spiritual remake/re-imagining. The cartoon graphics will not prepare you for how violent the came can get.

Ah, it does run in dosbox, Duke 3d refuses any interaction with dosbox ending with me getting Atomic Edition, and I got to say the modding community for Duke 3d... looks dead, very dead.
I also managed to get some of the addons, including some sort of map made for a porn magazine, that was a shock when I bumped into some pixely naked photos of random women.
as for the ps1 TTK and LOTB I discovered it needs to be emulated :(

DN3D (including the PSX and N64 ports) and DN Forever are the only Duke Nukem games which I've ever played. 3D is clearly the better game.

Even though I'm more into other build engine games such as Blood and Shadow Warrior, I have also played DN3D as well as DNF, however just as DoomUK says DN3D is the better of the two. I don't find most of DN3D's episodes to be crash hot though, the space one in particular bored me to tears.

Its close, but Duke 3D takes the cake for me, followed closely by II. I think my first ever Internet gameplay experience was with Duke 3D as well. Lots of fun memories from the N64 version as well, which had some fun tweaks and new maps for deathmatch.

And despite the hate, Zero Hour is my third fav Duke game :P

I never heard of Zero hour, was it any good?
also the best map in DN3D IMO was Tiberus ( <- is it that?) Station

Tiberius ;)

It contained a mini-battlelord, which means that it screamed "no" to my 4 year old self back in the early 00s. I still don't think of it as great map.
It's successor though - Lunar Reactor - is a great level however. So is Dark Side. A lot of the levels in E2 showed the Build Engine at its best. The only thing that topped it in the original game was the inclusion of meteorology on E4L1.

That said, there were tricks that were never used in the final game, but can be implemented by modders.

Personally I can't decide on a favourite level from DN3D. It's definitely not in E1 or E3 though.

Maybe the 3D. I've played the first, second and manhattan too. I think the poop trailer showed me everything about the forever. I've never finished any of them... sure I've played all the boss levels of 3D..

Oh you simply have to finish Manhattan. The last episode is really cool IMO.

as a stand alone game, sure it would be good, especially if it didn't have 12 years of hype. I think the reception is mainly due to the hype, and looking at old betas and such, I liked the 2002 build more, it reminded me a lot of timesplitters.

Really? I have played a couple of sizeable projects released fairly recently, there is work ongoing tarting up the HRP, though the pack is basically complete. EDuke32 is still being worked on. There's even a thread in these forums about an upcoming Duke mod. This forum is pretty active too.

I'll confess, I missed more or less all of that. Though I was amused at the message at the end of DN3D that told you to look for a sequel "soon."

Now...who here wishes there were more of the suicide bomber Pig Cops in Time to Kill? They all appeared across two levels and weren't used in a challenging enough way for my liking.

EDIT regarding HRP: The majority of textures are really good but the sprites are - simply put - terrible. There's even a bug with the RPG weapon sprite (that is, not the pickup) on my system where half of it was missing. This might be something down to screen resolutions, as it wasn't visible on AltimaMantoid's LP of DN3D, in which he used the HRP. The new skyboxes on HRP are pure fucking awesome, especially the one used for E2L11. I can't even begin to imagine how long it took to do all those frames for each direction of the sky.

In addition to the HRP, there is also the Polymer renderer which basically turns EDuke32 into GEDuke32 (claiming ownership of that name, thank you very much), which is really cool. It does more for DN3D than it does for Doom actually, due to the number of dynamic light sources that you get in DN3D, such as freeze rays, lasers, explosions, etc.

DOUBLE EDIT: Regarding the DN3D modding community, it's by no means dead, although it doesn't compare to that of Doom's. Not by a long shot.

I wish they would replace those damn lizard things in the subway, I hate those things!
