I'm rapidly approaching wizardhood. It doesn't bother me as I know I have the potential to be attractive and charming and it's due to my own choices and priorities that I'm not much of either at present.

Virginity and pornography interact in strange ways, though. I think that it used to be that sex was appreciated more as a form of sustenance. You plow the same fields, eat the same bread and fuck the same wife every day of your life and that's good enough for anyone. Now it's possible for a person's sexual tastes to evolve in the same way as their appreciation of an art form. The driving factor behind a person's advancing appreciation of music, literature, or etc. is boredom with the old. However, boredom only arises after a person is too experienced with a certain set of conventions and that same experience grants you the mental groundwork to appreciate something slightly more sophisticated, advanced or "baroque" which previously would have just seemed like pretentious noise or purple prose. Porn makes it possible for a person's sexuality to follow this same progression. Unlike living sexual partners which have the capacity to grow and change, porn is static, predictable and boring. The brain will adapt to its current kinks but will then become capable of sustaining interest in something more unusual, in one direction or another, and this can continue indefinitely until the stimuli it finds erotic no longer resembles human reality.

I'm idly curious about whether I'll still find the stock human female attractive in years hence, or if I'll be disappointed by their lack of equine reproductive architecture.

Well said. There's definitely the risk that porn will spoil you for real women. But there's also something very visceral about the presence of a real, breathing female in your bed, that porn can't hold a candle to.

Although if you're worried about becoming inured to vanilla sex, then you might want to take control of your erotic media diet, or at least try to compartmentalize fantasy from reality. Don't let me catch you in a fur suit! Speaking personally, there are things I look at that I would never want to perform (faux rape, faux incest, things involving dildos attached to power tools, etc.). I believe that most men have it within their ability to get with almost any of the girls they would want. All it takes is confidence, and meeting certain attainable pre-requisites that a particular woman desires. You can even turn them on to things they haven't considered before too. I think you have the right attitude.

I do agree, but you're missing one important thing from that very vital and truthful list: the women should learn how to negotiate solutions with the men who unsatisfied them, and should learn how to give warnings along the way instead of silently waiting until the last possible second to give a quick unexpected boot without talking things over.
With this ingredient added to the wonderful list of all the other things that you mentioned, the world would be a happier place.

I'm hoping that will be a possibility in the future. With enough probing, science will likely discover how to turn off the libido. Along with other "switches" that can deliver dopamine rushes while carefully balancing it so people don't starve to death from constant pleasure injections, sexuality as a pastime will be obsolete.

They already did, partially. It's called Depo-Provera. It's a female contraceptive which, if taken by males, completely suppresses sex drive. Its use has been tested as a means of rehabilitation of sexual offenders but, the chief problem with it being used that way is, of course, non-compliance.

People congregating in a virtual world to discuss a 20 year old computer game is non-essential to survival too. But we still want to do it.

I'll argue that it seems sex has been evolving/has evolved into something more complex than just procreation. I believe there is a natural reason for the way people behave. Lust inspires people to do certain things (sometimes good and sometimes bad, but so does hunger). For example, you want to have an active sex-life, therefore you strive to make it so via personal success. As social animals, human beings need incentives like sex in order to be motivated to do our part.

Moreover, other than just the gratification from climax, many people (myself included) enjoy the thrill of the hunt. I find that it's equally gratifying to have a good night out bar hopping with a girl you're attracted too. To then find that perfect opportunity to make a move and kiss her, and have it succeed. And then to coast through the rest of the night feeling positive, until you finally seal the deal at their house.

[Including non-reproductive sex] most of the things we enjoy are side-effects of the will to survive, though. Things like empathy, friendship, family, group dinners, dessert, story-telling... The list goes on.

Also, humans are some of the most sexually active species on the planet. Even when compared to bonobos, I believe we have more 'non-fruitful' sex - just to have fun. It's an integral part of our social dynamic, and I don't see any reason to do away with it. Certainly not any more reason than, say, doing away with family dinners.

Yup. Love, lust, and beauty: Dennis Dutton called these 'nature's way of acting at a distance.' You can't very well make your child smell like fresh chilli, or you lover taste like tiramisu (without some artificial help), but your brain can make you happy by just looking at them.

I can't be the only one here that practices abstinence. Mind you, full celibacy is much more difficult, and inevitably I make the stupid decision to go porn surfing, although I have recently been forcing myself to spend less time doing it, while viewing less explicit material and with less overall frequency.
