I'm sure they'll reappear.
Same with the barrels (there was a barrel in the leaked video - dunno if it was explosive).

Just to give this thread a reason to live, what would each difficulty setting do?

Hrm.

Maybe different ways to play a certain level? On one difficultly you can get through this door, but on another you need to go a bit further around to find the right key ro something.

Here's a list of things difficulty levels have done in the past. Give each a thumbs up/down and comments, plus add any I might have missed.

~ Monster/item placement: Alters the locations and numbers of monsters and powerups in the game maps (a la Doom, Quake)

~ Monster/item strength: Tougher monsters and weaker powerups on higher difficulty (a la Half-Life)

~ Additional objectives: You have to pull off more shit to beat a level at higher difficulties (a la Goldeneye)

~ Cool rare shit: Stuff you can only find at the higher difficulty levels (a la Diablo)

~ Randomness: Things are always the same at easy difficulty, but become increasingly more random and dynamic at harder levels (no examples)

~ Seriously unfair conditions: Monster respawning without powerup respawning at hard levels, or vice-versa for very easy levels (Doom NIGHTMARE)

~ Time limits: Oh hell no (no examples)

Oops. I didn't notice double posting. The forums went down for a long while so I couldn't tell, and I couldn't see the post after that...

Damnit these forums have a tendency of randomly going down when I click the submit button.

I already mentioned at least the women part of that in another thread...

Now kids, don't push it to far - I wouldn't want to be forced to do away with this thread.

About difficulties: Monsters should be placed differently (I can't imagine that they'll alter the number of monsters), monsters cause more damage, less powerups - simple, just like in RtCW.
Oh yeah, one thing they could do: Replace some of the weaker enemies with tougher enemies in the higher settings. Ex: an imp is placed behind a door in, say, "Hey, not too Rough!" - visit the same place in Ultra Violence and you'll say hello to "Afterglow's Mum" instead.

Is the level shown in the E3 demonstration really the first map? I hope not... the action starts too quickly... IMO there should be some more suspense first.

You can't be serious?
As far as I can see, you don't get thrown into the action too damn quickly - you start off moving down corridors, hearing sinister voices/screams and you wonder "what the Hell is this?" - then suddenly a bunch o' zombs appear out of nowhere and THEN the action starts.
Don't you remember e1m1?
You encountered the first opposition really fast (in UV at least).

Yeah well I'd still like it better if you were to wander around for two or three minutes, seeing some corpses and other scary stuff...

Heh, anyone else who thinks it's really scary when you see the fat guy being dragged into the bathroom?

Hm, I'm sorry, but I'd hate if the beginning was like that - I'm more of an action freak, I want to leap headfirst into the fray as soon as possible.
I remember when I first tried Doom: My older bro set the difficulty to "Hey, Not too Rough" because he thought that this setting was fitting for a Wolf3d veteran like me - I played for about two minutes before I decided to move the difficulty up a notch ("Hurt me Plenty"), because I didn't think there was enough action - no wonder that I only lasted until E1M5 :-)

Well hrm, I didn't find the bit with the fat guy being dragged into the bathroom scary in the video (sounds and vision not sufficient), but I can imagine that I WILL find it scary once I experience it in person.
Imagine playing through that level. You reach this hallway and suddenly hear this heavy, grunting sound of the pinky. You see what looks like a corpse slowly being pulled through a doorway by a critter you can't see and you think: "Oh shit, it's the bathroom scene!".

Yeah, that's true. And that's also the reason why I don't want any more DOOM3 pics or videos until it's released... would be a shame to find out about the traps in advance...

Damn straight - no more Doom 3 footage until release.
People are only going to leak videos and stuff that id don't want them to (like the E3 demo) plus, it'll spoil the surprises.

If I do not hear any of the of the old tunes in one form or another, that is not a Doom game I'm playing!

If it's an FPS, it has barrels. And crates - loads of crates.

...secret levels with porn in them! Waffle!

I've mentioned this before and I'll start a thread on it once the game is actually released. I intend to do a remake of the all-time classic Ultimate Doom wad, PORNDOOM. I'm looking for experienced modelers and skinners (Zaldron ?) to assist me in making 10,000-poly models of naked women, and mappers to help me constructing the "Marine R&R Strip Club" mini-episode that comes with it.
I'm not kidding, either.

Is the level shown in the E3 demonstration really the first map? I hope not... the action starts too quickly... IMO there should be some more suspense first.

No, I don't think so. Tim Willits mentioned in one of the Gamespy interviews that the player arrives some time BEFORE the disaster at UAC happens, so you have time to soak up the environment and such. Kinda like Half-Life, I hope.

what i demand, in add for porn, are those creepy stuff like pentagrams and monstrous stoneheads on the wall, corpses hanging from the roof and other unexplained shit. i really like the idea of the starport being "transformed" into a kind of nightmarish citadel by the presence of da evil. yum yum more like this, plz.

The ability to make curved organic figures in Doom3 could actually start a porn-addon renaissance.

/me summons forth Wraithchylde from the dark recesses of Newdoom's Lost Doom Sites dungeon. Slobbering uncontrollably Wraithchylde lunges at the Doom3 editor and starts churning out "organic forms" in pleasant fleshy colours.

Well, in regards to this there are something I hope for very badly, either:
1. You can skip all that by pressing a key (at least after you've seen it the first time - don't want to be forced to seeing the same stuff over and over again when you'd really want to leap into the fray).
Or
2. It really is so fun and entertaining in itself that you wouldn't mind going through it each and every time you start the game over again.

I really hated how I had to wait AGES in HL for not only the tram ride to finish but also how I had to wait for the damn experiment to go wrong.
I really, really hope that id will implement a feature which'll allow you to skip the "non-hostile" beginning - otherwise it's going to get old really fast.

Well you should at least be able to save a game right at the start of the action and load if you don't like the intro. But I bet it will be skippable.
