Value of Doom protos, promos, etc...???

Recommended Posts

Sounds interesting, is it something we haven't seen yet? Do you have anymore info?

Besides what he has, if it's something different, there is also a prototype of GBA Doom II and 2 prototypes of SNES Doom, one very early and one near-final, in the wild.

The disc-based prototypes aren't as valuable as cartridge-based ones in the gaming communities.

buttspit: Regarding the last sentence; Why is that? Just curious.

I'm just guessing here, but I think it's because they are rare/harder to find.

Probably a whole bunch of reasons, even I'm not positive. Some include what Zed already mentioned, but another reason I read about is the fact that they tend to be more difficult to backup/preserve. And more importantly, the disc-based ones usually have much fewer differences from the final release, or are pretty much identical.

A guy named Wil Shipley who beta tested Doom told me that Omni Group might have a version of Doom from June 1993, but I've been too lazy to ask them.

That sounds very interesting, Marnetmar. I would be willing to send The Omni Group an e-mail about it, but I'm no native English speaker, and I'm not really sure how to phrase such a mail.

I did end up buying the Doom 32x review and I just bought another supposed prototype/review of Final Doom for the ps1. Here's a pic of it:

The guy I bought it from said he got it from a friend who did articles for various magazines. He speculates the 0.93 is the build version or a percentage of its completion.

What would you guys pay for something like this?

Are there any known differences in the Final Doom prototype?

The guy doesn't know. I asked him what the size of the disc was and he said between 300MB to 400MB. You wouldn't happen to know what the size of the final version is, do you?

Depends on what exactly.

About 250 MB.

Heh, classic.

Anyway, the value of that disc depends on what's on it. It won't be worth much if it's the release build. I am curious why it's some 50 to 100 MB larger than the complete version. Either there is some additional content or it's like a beta disc of another game I have, bigger filesize than the released game, yet nothing more or different during play.

I tried looking through Omni Group's FTP, didn't find much Doom-related, several of the directories contents are hidden. Maybe they have that June '93 Doom beta uploaded there, guess there's no way to find out though. :( Would be really nice if someone could e-mail them and ask if they have it.
EDIT: Well, I just sent them a mail, so let's hope we're lucky.

I did get an answer to this. Basically, they think they have it, but can't release it due to an NDA.

I will post the complete e-mail I got back for reference - I don't think he'll mind:
Eric-
Thanks for emailing! I had a conversation about this with our CEO yesterday. I believe we may still have that source in one of our previous code repositories, but it was shared with us under a handshake-agreement NDA.

Specifically, the code they sent us hadn’t gone through their process to remove all of the IP that iD itself was NDA’d on. If we shared the code, there’s a risk we’d be putting them in violation of somebody else’s NDA, in other words.

The open source releases they’ve subsequently done *have* been through that process, if that helps...

Sincerely,

Brian C.
