ZDaemon fullscreen problem

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I didn't want to ask this here, but I can't find any answers in the ZD chat or forums (please don't send me to hell).

What is with that godawful black border around the HUD in-game on ZDaemon servers? Even the servers that don't have it on the top and bottom still have it on the sides. It REALLY makes the game suck.

There are a lot less players playing multi on ZD lately, and I'm sure that the tiny HUD is to blame. Does anyone know why this border is here and how to get rid of it?

Try playing around with options->video mode->advanced options->letterboxing.

Letterboxing and pillarboxing are used to fit a picture to a screen which uses a different aspect ratio. Since there are many different aspect ratios out there -- 4:3, 8:5, 16:9, etc. and Doom's baseline is 4:3 (more precisely, 8:5 stretched vertically to 4:3 but hey) that means that not all people have the same display.

Notably, Doom's default FOV is 90° for a 4:3 screen. If you don't squash the image, on a widescreen, you'll get more than 90° FOV. This can be seen as an unfair advantage over those who do play in 4:3. So apparently ZDaemon got a feature were servers can set which aspect ratio should be used, and if yours differ, then you'll get pillarboxing (wider than server's) or letterboxing (taller than server's).

Thanks for the quick replies.

I can't seem to do anything to fix it. I guess I'll just have to go back to making maps.

Why not just get Zandronum or Odamex for multplayer? Both of them feature widescreen support
