Devalaous Posted May 15, 2014 So, an old friend of mine finally was convinced to get into the Doom engine games, and he prefers Hexen to the rest of them. He asked if there were any good mods out there for it, but I dont know of a single one. Seems to be more devoid of content than Strife. So is there anything notable out there for Hexen yet? Preferably complete non-WIP stuff 0 Share this post Link to post
Tristan Posted May 15, 2014 Quick look on the Notable WADs page of the Doom wiki led me to this. 27 maps, never played them, but the reviews are pretty good 0 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted May 15, 2014 Do you mean gameplay mods, or mapsets? Or both? 0 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted May 15, 2014 Arg, browser crash while writing a reply. >:( Well, here's the short version. A few older maps from the archive that I liked. (Caldera comes with an "excessive puzzle bullshit" warning though): http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/a-c/badland.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/a-c/caldera.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/a-c/cent092b.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/a-c/chuxen.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/a-c/colin4.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/d-f/dshexed.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/g-i/hexthief.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/m-o/necros.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/s-u/starship.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/p-r/rivrwood.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/v-z/vaults13.zip Some that I don't care for but are generally recommended. IIRC Wolfen has troubles in modern ZDoom ports though. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/p-r/roc.zip http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/hexen/v-z/wolfen.zip This map from Sverre Kvernmo http://www.monstercute.com/uploads/2/8/1/9/2819457/deadlock.zip I think I'm forgetting something but that should get you started. As for gameplay mods, I don't really like 'em, so maybe someone else can recommend some. Also I'm not really up on newer mapsets, unfortunately. 1 Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 15, 2014 I entirely forgot about Sverre's map, thanks. I had it on my HD marked as Heretic. Is it really Hexen? if so I need to rename the folder. Funny that Eris linked to the one mod he found on his own without my help. 0 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted May 15, 2014 Yeah, Deadlock is for Hexen. Playing it actually led me to finding a ZDoom bug with the way floating objects are handled. Should be fixed in recent devbuilds. The only other non-idgames archive mapset I have for Hexen is an old thing by King REoL that probably got rejected for using music samples from Nine Inch Nails. It's... OK. A few bits of bad design, and some terrible 90s-rock MIDI covers, but it has it's moments. I can upload it later if there's interest. I've sort of had it in my mind for awhile that I (or someone) should send a fixed-up version onto idgames, never got around to it though. 0 Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 15, 2014 Yeah, he annoyingly was going to buy it off Steam in that Heretic pack, heard that the music in Deathkings was broken (ie not patched to 1.1) then pirated it to get the best version. Dont worry, I gave him hell for it. Deathkings is practically a mod in its own right, just in official IWAD form. I wonder if the class system is the reason Hexen seems to be the most unmodded IWAD.. 0 Share this post Link to post
EffinghamHuffnagel Posted May 15, 2014 Found a version of Wolfen that does work under ZDoom, fixed by LilWhiteMouse herself. You need 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) to open it. plums Posted May 15, 2014 Nice find. Maybe I'll give it another try, it's been a while since I played it last. I certainly didn't hate it, it just didn't grab me too much. 0 Share this post Link to post

I remember playing and enjoying Chuxen, Vaults, Centromere (cent092b), and Caldera. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fulgrim Posted May 15, 2014 After playing through Vanilla Hexen. I'd give Wrath of Cronos a shot. 0 Share this post Link to post
Varis Alpha Posted May 15, 2014 i played a bit of Starship, but the game refuses to respond after i get back to the ship after completing the first world. like, it doesn't crash, the music still responds, but it just sits there completely frozen. 0 Share this post Link to post

Strange. What port? 0 Share this post Link to post
Pencil of Doom Posted May 19, 2014 He should try Serpent:Ressurection as that is one of the best mods that there is for Hexen. And i highly recommend it. 0 Share this post Link to post

What port? both ZDoom and GZDoom, i believe i ran it in, and got the same problem. uuuuunless this mod isn't supposed to be run with either of those ports, but the stuff that was in it led me to believe that it was for ZDoom. 0 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted May 19, 2014 Well it's meant for Vanilla Hexen, but it should work fine in ZDoom I think. I'll take a look at it later. Edit: So I just played through to returning from the first world in GZDoom, using a recent devbuild. Worked fine for me. Don't really know what to suggest, if other Hexen levels work fine for you. Maybe verify that hexen.wad is unmodified? http://doomwiki.org/wiki/HEXEN.WAD 0 Share this post Link to post
Vermil Posted May 20, 2014 The player starts in Starship wad's first map (the ship) may have some sort of issue. I remember that in Doomsday once upon a time (i.e it's long been fixed), the player used to spawn at the wrong start on the first map. 0 Share this post Link to post
wolfie3dfan Posted May 20, 2014 I got hooked on hexen games by finally understanding the concept of hubs from Viscerus. Awesome mapset imo. check out http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/levels/hexen/ for a bunch of others. wolfen had me stumped for ages until it was fixed. It is a beautiful mapset too. Caldera is the most complex so far. I've got about 114 maps that claim as hexen. Some are stinkers but with gzdoom the game of hexen is so much fun. barbara 0 Share this post Link to post
hetdegon Posted May 20, 2014 If using zdoom, this Hexen wad kind of remakes Hero Quest (the old board game) on it. http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=45245 It's at least an interesting concept. 0 Share this post Link to post
Shadow Hog Posted May 20, 2014 You could always break out Samsara and play through Hexen as the Marathon security officer or Duke Nukem or something. 0 Share this post Link to post
ETTiNGRiNDER Posted May 21, 2014 IMO the best level sets/hubs are: 1. Deathkings of the Dark Citadel 2. Chuxen 3. Hub of Pain 4. either Newhub4 or Shannara, both of which hang in the "ok, not great" region for me. Honorable mentions go to Temple2 (gimmicky but pretty interesting at times), Centromere (great stuff for what's there, but unfinished), HexQuak5 (often lovely in visual atmosphere, but equally often questionable in gameplay design), and Vaults / Caldera (lots of "outside the box" ideas but often gimmicky and annoying). Not so honorable mentions go to Stonegate, World of Zoweseandek, and Dreadnaught + Knockabout, all of which I consider to be below the "good enough line", but given the dearth of Hexen .WADs, not so far below as to be out of bounds if you've played the better stuff. I never saw the great appeal of Starship; it's well-made I suppose but seems a bit jokewaddy for my tastes. Likewise, there is no port wad I can really recommend with the possible exception of Scourge of Viscerus. Most of them either miss the point, have crappy bestiary/armory additions that they'd be better off without, or both. As for single levels, well, a solitary Hexen level is a sad and lonely thing. But Lair of Thieves does some interesting stuff as such brief jaunts go. 0 Share this post Link to post

It is very silly and verges on being a jokewad, but I actually do like a few of the maps and it's got enough variety to keep me interested. I mean, relatively. Like you said there just aren't many Hexen mapsets at all, and something of that quality probably wouldn't "make my list" if there were a third as much content for Hexen as there is for Doom. Likewise, there is no port wad I can really recommend with the possible exception of Scourge of Viscerus. Most of them either miss the point, have crappy bestiary/armory additions that they'd be better off without, or both. Agreed 100%, and I'm glad to see someone else say this! So many of the attempts to "fix" Hexen just fall flat for me. As for single levels, well, a solitary Hexen level is a sad and lonely thing. But Lair of Thieves does some interesting stuff as such brief jaunts go. For single maps I also really, really like Riverwood, one of the best village-type maps I've played. Also manages to use a Heresiarch in a way that isn't entirely non-threatening, which is rare. 0 Share this post Link to post
