Full titles of texture names

Recommended Posts

Many of Doom's textures have pretty obvious names, like DOOR1 or TANROCK2 etc. However there are many textures, limited to 8 characters, that have abbreviations in them, making them tricky to read. Shall we compile a list of full official names for the textures?

i.e.:

CEMPOIS : Cement, Poison Sign
MARBLOD1: Marble, Blood Trim
SPCDOOR1: Space Door 1
SKINMET1: Skin, Metal Frame 1

These ones are kinda easy, but some are harder than others. I never really understood what the SLAD in SLADWALL meant, or ZIMMER, or COMPOHSO (Computer, "Oh, So there really isn't enough computer textures, huh?")

Here's a full list of Doom and Doom 2's textures (which, btw, probably took me longer to find than to hand write myself. sourced from Gez in a thread that was post helled. This info really should be documented somewhere)

Well "Zimmer" is German for "room", for in this case I think it refers to Zimmerit, an anti-magnetic coating compound used in WW 2, which was applied in characteristic ridged or waffled pattern, similar the various ZIMMERx textures.

SLADxxxx....maybe SLAnteD tiles? Or SLime Anti...something?

SLAD: SLime AntiaDherent. After all, those textures are used to line the walls of lava or slime pits....

SHAWN1-3 I'm guessing are simply named after Shawn Green, although since those apply (I think) to shiny silver textures, it could double to some kind of abbr. meaning "Shine" or "Sheen".

Here's one more idea - since texture names in doom builder and doom(2).wad (opened with slade or something) are different (most are not all), a list should be made containing doom builder texture name and corresponding wad texture name. It's really useful and saves a ton of time when you want to replace doom textures with your own custom textures for example since you still have to use the texture name that wad has. Right now i have to look through the whole wad in slade to find the texture i need to replace. With a team, this thing should be piece of cake.

I think you're getting confused. The 'textures' you see in SLADE aren't actually textures per se, but patches, and listed in the PNAMES lump. These patches are combined and named in the TEXTURE1 lump to make textures (and generally save space by reusing patches in different combinations to make more textures).

I see, ok then you have to replace the patch to change texture you want to change, still these patches and textures have different names, so when in need to replace textures, some list like this would be really useful. Or am i missing something again?

Here you have them. The link by GreyGhost is still valid.

Likewise, I suppose the SP_HOT, SP_ROCK, SP_FACE, and SP_DUDE textures were made for Sandy Petersen. Maybe he whined that all he had to work with were bricks and other man-made looking stuff.

ICKWALLx: Gray Wall, Icky?
BLODRIPx: Blood, Pipes, Dripping
MODWALLx: Modern Wall?

Note that a single patch may be used in several textures, and a single texture may use several patches.

SLADE's texture editor will tell you which patches are used in which texture. In the patch tab, you can get which textures use which patch.

I would guess that textures like STARTAN1 mean Star Wars. Note how the Jaguar versions of the textures are "STWARx." "Star" in PC, "war" in Jaguar. You get "Star War," add an S and you've got Star Wars. Note how the Doom Bible calls for "Star Wars’ Imperial stuff" in the list of desired textures.

It doesn't matter much to me that it looks nothing like what is actually seen in the movies, the internal file names across different versions handled by id themselves seem to suggest it, and even the design doc calls for Star Wars textures. It looks fitting for the whole "believable, lived-in spaces" concept, especially the alpha version of the texture. It's been there since the beginning, as opposed to late in development, which means that it was made back when Tom had more influence over the project.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Starstruct" which was also mentioned in the Doom Bible, but Star Wars could also work too, as I recall reading in Masters of Doom where the id guys were talking about Star Wars in reference to the textures they wanted, where everything was metallic, aged, and leaking, etc.

It's most likely starstruct as you said.

But then where does the "war" part from the Jaguar version come from? Also, the patch names in the PC version start with "SW." Granted, W could easily be wall, but there's still no reference to any kind of "struct" anywhere.

Why do people find it so hard to consider the possibility that it could reference Star Wars? Given all of the evidence, it seems most likely to me.

They were obviously trying to make a texture based on a kind of wall likely to be used in space stations and installations, the idea of going into space existed before star wars which is just a sci-fi fantasy, the only references as 40oz said is how they were designing some textures.

The textures which really make me think of Star Wars are the Doom 1 computers, SHAWN and especially that vertical 16-wide light source with alternating small lamps and human-sizesd lamps (Doom 1 only). Tile that one vertically and it looks like inside Death Star or some bottomless reactor.

Textures starting with SP stand for Sandy Petersen.

Likewise, JR for John Romero and TH for Tom Hall. Of course, these labels were only in the 0.5 alpha and were renamed in the final, but it does point to which textures were requested/made by who. Sometimes patch names can give it away, too, like "tomwall" and such.

It's worth pointing out that the COMSTAx textures mean computer station. The com part is obvious, and the alpha refers to these textures as STATIONx.
