"Kidnapped"!

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm sure by now you all have heard of the girl who was kidnapped in Salt Lake City the other night. If you haven't, look here, here, or here. Just the facts: 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart disappeared from her east-side Salt Lake home early Wednesday morning. Her 9-year-old sister told her parents that a white male, 5'8" with a gun broke into the house, grabbed Elizabeth, and vanished. Right now there's a statewide manhunt going on for Elizabeth and he abductor, and there is currently a $250k reward for info leading to their recovery.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Depending on everyone's receptiveness, there are some "concerns" about this whole thing that some friends have made me aware of.

Yep, looks like another kid got kidnapped. Happens daily.

The fact that they are a 4-person family living in a 7-bedroom house is very disturbing indeed.

"We have six children, and I went from room to room ... and I couldn't find her."

Beside the point, admittedly. Anyway, it's funny how these kidnappings are only big deals if it happens to someone famous/wealthy.

Having said that, tho, did anyone in the US hear bout the kidnapping/murder of Jamie Bulger (Bootle, Liverpool) waaaay back in the early 90's?

Initially upon hearing news and the quote, "Approx 4,000 people are kidnapped in America per year" THAT shocked me, 4,000? Don't they have death penalty for kidnap?

Hmmm.....the second they catch the guy who did this, he should have his balls cut off and fed to him through a straw.
There's no sense in putting a kid's parents through this kind of torment, just because you want to become a household name by kidnapping someone.

Erm, right... all the articles mentioned one younger sister and no others. Where's that from?

Should I start a poll about how many pieces she will be found in, or should I just bar my mouth for a change?

"Ooooh you sick sick man, you're sooo nasty for talking about chopped up little girls! In fact, i'm so offended that i'm gonna chop you up into little pieces with a blunt steak knife."

Bar your mouth, or I'll hunt you down and cut your throat ;-)

See, now if there were real punishments for things like this, maybe they wouldn't happen so often. When they find the guy, cut off his legs and give him a squeeky wheelchair.

And yeah, i doubt that there would be a 250k reward for a the daughter of a poor black family.

Guys, my sources say there wasn't a kidnapping. It's believed that this girl set things up with her boyfriend to get out from under her parents' control. Still interested?

The page has changed since i was there last. Oh well...

Anyway - YAY, way-to-go in a 'screwing over your parents big-time' kinda way!
Lemme guess, friend finds her, recieves the money, splits it 3 ways between friend, kidnappee and kidnapper? Wonder if they'll start bumping eachother off like in 'Wild Things'?

I gotta stop watching vids. It's messing with my head.

Sounds like a bad movie plot. Fill me in.

How did they convince the 9 year old to go along with their story?

You can convince a nine-year-old to tell people you're Jesus if you're a few years older and can keep a straight face.

Sounds like a bad movie plot.

That's what my sources are saying, too. They think it's funny as hell.

Fill me in.

Alright, this girl just graduated from junior high school last week. The family had been planning to move out of town within a few weeks. We know that Ms. Smart's parents were very protective and very paranoid about her, and that she didn't get out of the house to see friends much. My friends think she didn't want to leave her local friends, or that she had a boyfriend that her parents didn't approve of and didn't want to leave. That's why she set this up.

We think the girl's parents didn't approve of their daughter's appearance and attitude. Look at the photo the parents gave the press, the one that's showing up on the Missing Person fliers. That photo is a few years old at least; it definetely isn't a fourteen-year-old girl with long blonde hair. There have to be yearbook photos from this past year floating around, and those would be much more useful for identifying the girl. But the parents must not want people to see those recent photos.

There's the forensic end of things. The house has one of those perimeter alarms. The nine-year-old said that the kidnapper climbed in through the window over the kitchen sink, the only window that wasn't wired to the alarm. Now can ANYONE here imagine climbing into your house through the window over your sink? Difficult at best, and for us guys, quite painful at worst. The window screen is cut where the guy supposedly climbed through; the forensic guys still haven't come back as to which way the screen was actually cut through. Also, the kidnapper was supposed to switch off the perimeter alarm on the way out. He'd need a password to do that, or someone to willingly provide the password. Combined with the fact that there's no evidence of a struggle (I'd struggle. Would you struggle? Even if the guy had a gun.) makes the investigators think it was set up in advance by the "kidnapee".

Finally, why did the nine-year-old wait two hours before she rushed in to tell her sleeping parents? And why did the parents wait another two hours to call the cops?

There are too many different news versions
One says the alarms were off because the kids were always setting them off
Also one says the parents were out, the girl waited 2 hours until they came home then she told them when they got home

Heh, that's exactly a reason I wouldn't struggle. What I'd probably do is just end up getting in an argument until the kidnapper goes nuts and either gives up or shoots himself :P

So it was all just some kid fucking around? My solution is still pretty much teh same: cut off her legs and give her the squeeky wheelchair. She wouldn't do it again, I guarantee.

I find this story to be really stupid. Does anyone else? I already have a feeling whats going to happen. Some random person finds the body and more stuff happens. Yada yada yada, it's like every other televised kiddnapping...

And diehard Mormons.

There must be dozens of people doing foot searches in the foothills around the Smart home. A lot of them came into my store tonight. They're all friends of the family who volunteered, and not one of them is a professional investigator or search specialist.
