Are Heretic-N demos still available anywhere?

Recommended Posts

Yikes! Did Heretic-N die and nobody noticed, or even archived the content?

This is what I've got:

http://www.4shared.com/zip/raGGD_USba/hereticN.html
http://www.4shared.com/zip/dZ1n4qAdce/Heretic.html
http://www.4shared.com/zip/obrvSlCWce/peroxyd2s.html

The first is from the original Heretic-N. The second is from the revival by Vince. The third is mostly the incoming files as of early 2007. I'm not sure what activity there was after that. Judging from this thread, not much.

PS: Thanks to Opulent for these files; my own archives aren't as complete.

Thanks Grazza. Yeah I figured someone at least must have an offline copy but I can't find a publicly accessible mirror of it anywhere. Hopefully someone has any newer files that are missing.

Didn't check oocities for a mirror of the geocities version yet, since it would be missing a lot if it even has anything.

FYI 4shared requires a login to download. I just used a temp mail address so no problem, but if there is interest in these files from anyone else, maybe I'll rehost on mediafire if that's OK.

Sure, feel free to rehost. That must be something new on 4shared; I don't recall it being like that some years ago.

I even have database ready for it, but no time to fill it with records hehe. I think I have all demos as I've contacted Vince and asked for permission to grab everything from his site and continue with heretic-n...

Nice fx02, thanks! That would be cool to see Heretic-N continue. I hope to eventually get extended demo support into Crispy Heretic (Chocolate Heretic fork), would be nice if that increases interest in Heretic speedrunning a bit.

e: Can't access the doom.com.hr right now, will try again later...

e2: got them, thanks again! Took me a bit to find the right way to batch-download them with wget, sorry if I left any weird activity logs while trying to figure out the right invocation :p

Yeah server was down... again! :( sry, so it was replaced with new one today. Since heretic-n demos were recorded with new patches I guess it would not be a problem to accept demos recorded with choco heretic fork, but there is no/really small interest and I don't have time to do it.

Hi, i started a little website for the heretic-n : http://82.66.133.154:85/Heretic-N/

I still have a lot of work, but I think that will be enough :D
upload demo work & database isn't fully updated (I haven't dealt with the incoming folder yet)

I do like what JCD has done but if you want I could give you access to my server/stuff and I would be glad to host heretic-n continuation. If you are interested PM me.

Other than some miscellaneous, incomplete demos, I have 725 Heretic demos.

The 725 (11 mb): http://www.mediafire.com/download/a51jaaj5272dibk/heretic.zip

Plus JC's new demo, h3n8-217, at:
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=1301250#post1301250

Plus 4 more that desync (attached):

h4f71344.zip -- I'm pretty sure this is a Heretic engine error.
-- Bruno desynced by a little pecker. :)
-- It's possible, but very unlikely, that this is recorded with an earlier vvheretic version or wheretic or something.

sd_h58_lut_heretic_5.zip -- jHeretic recorded in 2001. jheretic cannot playback its own demos.
- I tried multiple ports and even put the lump in the iwad. It still doesn't play past the problem location.

e3sp1104.zip -- Vincent probably recording with an unreleased version of wHeretic, wHeretic 0.5b9.

e2m1-e2m8_VincentCatalaa_skill4_speed_wheretic_070902_e2sp-844_1053.zip
-- wHeretic 0.5b9 again.
-- desyncs on last level.

If anyone has a solution for any of these(or wHeretic version 0.5b9), I'm very interested.

Is well, that the Neretic-N is continues, I'm glad to see that people are working on updating the database.

Opulent
Thanks for your large archive file, I found it about 30 new original demos for me!
For your problem/desync files:
e2sp-844, e3sp1104, h4f71344 - I've seen before, I have the same problem with them;
sd_h58_lut_heretic_5 - original Heretic format demo, normally played for me on the Heretic 1.3 and old betas jHeretic v0.91-0.93, this demo have problem around 1:25, but are you sure that it is recorded on jHeretic? I found in your archives a similar name record: e3m8_SteveDudzik_skill5_max_090501_sd_h38_5_blackplague_lut_928 - this record could not be recorded on jHeretic, but by name and date very similar. I think, sd_h58_lut_heretic_5 can be recorded on a Heretic 1.3.

In your archive demos by Andrey Budko marked as "legacy142" although they are recorded on Doomsday 1.7.8 and correctly work only on this version.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. Of course Budko's demos are deng178(not legacy 142), as it says in the textfile and the filename when I posted it on the DSDA. Just a clerical, cut-and-paste error from processing Bruno's demos. Thanks for catching that.

Lut's demo was never meant to be complete, I don't think. The lmp file is not in a real game format(LMPC chokes on it, my lmpc doesn't, but that doesn't mean much); and is obviously jHeretic recorded. It is from here: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/2457-heretic-e3m8 // http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=29865#post29865

Yeah, no port named in the demo-filename means that it the real game.

Thanks, Grazza! I didn't have 7 Vergilio demos from vincentds.ath.cx:2000. Some of the best Heretic demos ever too.

So, for those keeping track, that's the first 725, plus the 4 that desync, plus the 8 that are attached, plus JC's latest, h1ma4825.zip (here:
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1302059 ) as well as his temp folder, which I assume is new: http://82.66.133.154:85/Heretic-N/temp/

If you are really hardcore, there are a few other old, limited-value, miscellaneous demos here: Heresies download:
http://www.legendsworld.net/shooter/year/1995#1362 (IIRC that that is the right one)
as well as some incomplete demos in other old archive dump folders like cd-textfiles.com, internet-archive, and such...

I found the solution for the sd_h58_5.lmp. You have the broken file in your archive, download sd_h58_5.lmp from this old theme again and check. This demo normally working in jHeretic 0.91-0.93, on Heretic 1.3 or vv's hack this demo have problem near the end. For jHeretic I recommend version 0.93, all newer versions have worse compatibility with original demo format and in the final release version jHeretic 1.0 (2001) already not present the original Heretic demo code. jHeretic 0.93 still available here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/7476/JHeretic_0_93. I unfortunately do not know how these older versions work on modern computers and Windows systems, I myself have old computer and for me it work well. If you can run this version on your system - that's good, then, if you need any help or have interest for jHeretic betas - let me know. I can say that in this old versions you can play some demos in the original Heretic format.

In any case, this sd_h58_5.lmp is the very first demo that I find and recorded on jHeretic, though back in 2001! Pity that Lut did not say the port version, which he used to this record.

Did you mean Heresies Developer's Network CD on this page? Unfortunately I can not download anything from this resource. I'm interested in any demos for Heretic in original format, if you can upload these demos for me, I would be very grateful.

Heresies -- Heretic demos.
These aren't of any quality... and I think the Church demo is for an earlier version of the wad.

BTW, what about some demos from you. :)
Plenty of Heretic pwads to do... or Hexen even for us Raven-games fans.

Thanks for the old demos! I think they all recorded on Heretic 1.0, only 3 of them work normally on 1.3 for me. The Balls.wad and lmp very interesting and funny, Church demo does not work well for me too.

Hey, you already have 2 my demos in your archive! Funny, but when I record them, I thought that nomonsters on e3m4 has no demos in Heretic-N. I have not really seen the demos recorded by JCD much earlier, if I saw them - I would not even try, because I'm not good speedrunner, I am more like to watch demos :)

In any case, if you ask - no problem, I recorded a few demos, but not for Heretic-N. Propose to recall one good old map - "Arena of d'Sparil" (Arena.wad 1995), I have always liked this level and gameplay on it: Arena719.lmp - simple overview/workaround for map on Smite-Meister, Arena326.lmp - I'm very, very tried to add speed on Black Plague. Specifically for Opulent and all Heretic fans!

Yeah, there are only 15 or so people who have recorded Heretic demos, so yeah, I know you did. :)

These two demos were excellent! You are confidently modest.
The 719 demo was a how-to Heretic... it shows almost all the monsters, artifacts, and weapons(with the book as well) all in the same demo. You made the liches look weak and made short work of that damn teleporting bastard.
Both demos worked for me with vv's Heretic v1.3 in DOS, in case you were wondering.
Thanks.

You have old hardware and real DOS installed on it? You're really hardcore :)
I did not plan to record "how-to Heretic" demo, but on this map it is easy to make such demo, lacking only the Maulotaur and Gauntlets, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the information that the demos work for you.

That makes me think I have been away from Doom & Heretic for way too long. I should really get around to update Heretic-N haha.

I Still have 3x Windows 98 PC around too, I will put them back together again and test vvheretic in coop.

It's amazing to see people are still going after these demos. I really appreciate that, and I'm pretty sure Vincent and the others do too. We worked hard to get them done.

Reading this thread made me wanna play again, even though I'm busy now and I also don't have a Win 98 computer anymore. Are there any source ports for heretic that can keep compatibility with the original exec for demo recording? That'd be great.

PS: Reading those txt files made me embarrassed by how bad my English was back then (it still is, but not as much as before XD).

I think Competition Doom (CNDoom) should work, you can download it here: http://www.doom.com.hr

Hey ZeroMaster, thanks for the info. I tried to playback one of my old demos (recorded with the original .exe + vv's hack), and it worked just fine. I still have to try some other demos and make sure it's fine, but that's great. I think the opposite should work as well.

Man, I was doing so bad on the Smite-meister skill level demos. If I get some free time, I'll try to improve some of these demos.

EDIT: Tried 2 other demos, and they worked too, but something I noticed is that the score screen is not being shown, and the demo ends as soon as the player finishes the level.

I know you know this, but you have forgotten... it has been a long time for all of us.

Heretic demos recorded with the real game will exit once the exit trigger is activated. Only demos recorded with a modified executable will have a scorescreen.

Hello Opulent. Sorry, I actually didn't know that the demos would end before the score screen on another port, I just thought they wouldn't work at all.
I set up DosBox and tried to test the game (and the demos) and they worked just fine.

Has anyone made high quality Heretic TASes?

Does every Doom trick work in Heretic too? Like all-ghosts? Would be interesting to see Heretic void glides or something like that.

Oh, so the Doom TAS tools don't work in Heretic? Why not? How hard would it be to make the tools compatible with Heretic?
