Which game(s) do you like as much as Doom?

Recommended Posts

Are you obsessed only with Doom, or do you play/make mods extensively for other games as well?

If yes, which one is that game?

For me, it's Deus Ex. Such great mods were made for that, I swear...(The Nameless Mod - obvious, Redsun2020, 2027, Nihilum is also promising)

This is a tough one... I have to say the classic Mario titles, though. In order:
-Super Mario World
-SMB3
-SMB1 (I've gotten within like 25 seconds of the world record on this one, still trying for it in futility...)
-Mario Sunshine (I see this one as a work of art)
-SMB2: Lost Levels
-Mario 64
-Mario 2 (Doki Doki)

But I also LOVE Street Fighter 2 and SF Alpha. Hot damn thems good games.

Additionally, GTA 4 (That's right, 4) is another one of my favorite games out there. Niko is most definitely one of my favorite protagonists around. He's got a good heart, but he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. What a fucking badass. (There's a lot of cool GTA 4 mods out there, but I don't have any of them - just seen the hilarious footage on YouTube.)

Arcade games in general too. All the classic stuff - Pac Man, Galaga, Tetris, Breakout, those cooperative fighting games like X-Men, The Simpsons, etc.

In terms of modding, the only other game I've touched is SMW. Replacing music is so damn hard in that game! I'm best just playing mods when it comes to the Mario games, rather than trying to make my own, it seems..

I probably like other FPS by id Software equally.

Quake series = I may have played the original Quake even before Doom. Quake's multiplayer (in general, be it QW, QL or others) is second to none.

Wolfenstein = RtCW's multiplayer gave me the BEST memories, because it's the only game I have played with a clan. We were scattered all over the country, but once a year we would meet in a secluded camping site to barbecue, laugh together and just have a good time. Wolfenstein made it possible.

Rage = contrary to popular opinion, I consider RAGE to be the best single-player FPS I have played in my life. Doom may have more replay value, but when it comes to first impression and the first playthrough, Rage climbed to the top of my personal ranking. That's the game I compare other modern games to.

I haven't played the new Wolfenstein yet, but something tells me it may give me even better experience than Rage. I hope the new Doom will leave other games behind for me as well.

The N64 Zeldas, though obviously modding is more-or-less out of the question for those. I've messed around with OoT modding tools a few times, but I think it'll be another few years before the tools are to a point where OoT modding can be a thing for those of us without masochistic tendencies. I did play through Zelda's Birthday though, one of the romhacks for OoT. It had a shitty custom dungeon, with texturing and geometry that looked like shit, obstacles made up of immobile actors all squashed together, and so on, but damn if it wasn't exciting to see a brand new dungeon in the game. One day I'll bother learning how to import level geometry into that game, it's gotta be possible.

In the mean time, I just try to learn as much about the games as possible. One thing I did about a year ago was procrastinate practicing Master Quest for some crappy marathon, and then routed and practiced a dirty all-dungeons casual speedun route the day before. Coincidentally, I played a bunch of Doom after that to fill time since I finished the game hours before I was scheduled to.

Nowadays it's learning the proper Majora's Mask any% route.

I think it's possible, as it runs in the same engine as Mario 64, and someone has ported Hangar into that.

After watching that, I had this thought that it'd probably be easier designing the basic geometry in Doom then converting it to SM64 format... Assuming it's easy enough, which it probably isn't.

I'm surprised modding isn't more common for SM64 and OoT considering how popular they are. The tools are horribly underdeveloped.

None, I think.

Well, okay, there's one - Doom 2. :)

The entire classic doom series pretty much.

How many of these do we need?

Zero. We need zero replies like this. Outside of misguided arab guys selling fridges, watches and movies there has never been a forum in the history of the universe where "too many topics about this topic" has ever been a valid complaint, no matter how much this might grate on anal retentive control freak type personalities.

If you know you're not interested in a topic by the topic's title, you don't click on it. This is Internet 101. This is how forums work. I shudder to think about a hypothetical compulsive obsessive lost soul out there who would religiously read every single thread. Seek help.

Well, somebody definitively needs to seek help. But are we sure we know who it is? ;-)

I'm not sure if everyone's list of favourite games has changed that much in a month that a new thread is necessary. Not to mention this, even more recent, sister thread:

Why, with all those new interesting and successful AAA games that come out every month, surely the competition for a place in one's favourite games list must be relentless.

I don't like any games as much as Doom, but trailing fairly far behind would be:

Splatterhouse
Left 4 Dead
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Counter-Strike
Metal Gear Solid
Super Mario Bros. 3

Dark Forces II

Maybe nostalgic based, as I still remember the good times I had trying to figure out how to open the first door I encountered that did not have a button next to it. Took me forever to realize I just could just press "Use" on the door itself.

And recently Counter-Strike: GO. The game is Gun Porn in its truest form. It's just as good as actual porn.

Leisure Suit Larry games. Not because the games did any thing revolutionary(which it didn't) but because of the main character, Larry.

There's just something about him that makes him such a loveable character. Maybe it's because of how he try's to pick up ladies by saying the most inappropriate things possible, or maybe it's his wimpy voice.

But the games are some of the funniest I've played, I never laughed so hard at a video game in my life. If you don't find scenes like buying condoms at the convenient store in Larry 1 then you take your self way to seriously.

Quake series, especially III and its ports/derivatives.

Grand Theft Auto. I've been a fan since the start and it just keeps getting better, IV being the only real blip.

Starfox. Can't wait for the new one.

Mario Kart. 'Nuff said.

And I'm a massive fan of danmaku/bullet hell games, particularly the ones by Cave, Espgaluda II Black being by far the best of the bunch.

I don't understand why GTA IV is often seen as a 'downer' in the GTA list. I thought the driving was generally much better than GTA 5, the storyline/cutscenes were very compelling, the voice acting and graphics were top notch, etc. - Is it just because San Andreas was so amazingly badass that everyone thought it fell flat? As a sequel to GTA 3, I thought it was everything I liked, but better.

GTA 5 is sorta like the true 'spritual successor' to San Andreas, but the only thing I really got out of it was the online play. The control generally felt a lot more stiff in 5 than in 4, at least for me, though I'll admit I play them on console.

I can't believe I forgot SPACEFOX, the SNES and N64 titles are two of my favorite games!

Sonic CD...

Mario Advance...

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (No Drac X plz)...

Top Gear...

You know, the usual.

My favorite games in term of modding would have to be a tossup between Mario World and Sonic 1. Sonic 1 since with the disassemblies you can really dig into the game and change what you want. This leads to some fun stuff down the line (Sonic Tetris, Big's Fishin' Derby, Sonic Classic Heroes). It also has MIDtoSMPS, which makes music porting a breeze.

Mario World is good for the sheer amount of mods and Lunar Magic itself. Unfortunately, as it stands disassemblies aren't used for the most part, and the game is sort of a black box that you jam patches and janky tools into and hope that it still works. There is also no MIDtoSMPS equivalent. Which sucks.

I absolutely loved GTA4. Amazing graphics, especially compared to the previous GTAs, likable characters (unlike GTAV), much better vehicle controls, and a dynamic city that really feels alive etc. I live in NYC so I know what areas in the game are based off of in real life and was very impressed with it. That game lasted me a long time.

San Andreas was great but I remember back when it first came out I was a little disappointed with the fact that it felt way too similar to GTA3 and Vice City, due to them all using the same engine.

I don't think any game I have played is as great as Doom but close enough would be Blood, Diablo 2 and Morrowind/Oblivion.

Glad to hear someone else shares the opinion. I agree that the 3 mains are much better in 4 than in 5, and man the driving in 4 is damn fun. I wish it was a bit less stiff in 5, racing onling is a lot of fun even so. Shame I cant use XBLA anymore :(

So you love all these games AS MUCH as Doom?

...I started to doubt that I'm an actual gamer. I mean, I loved Fallout 3 as well, for example, but I don't feel the desire to play it again in the near future. It was enough once.

Much much +1 for this. That game is so "whole", I mean everything fits to each other so perfectly...

Sims 3. I do fucking crazy shit in it. Probably he only other game I play as often as Doom.

One day I'll redo the Doomguy and the zombies parodies I made in Sims 2 in much better accuracy.
