Things you cant wait for to become obsolete

Recommended Posts

I feel like the last couple decades brought a lot of stupid ideas and inventions and social norms surrounding them. What are some new things that have happened that, while pretty lousy and inefficient for what they are supposed to do, still haven't yet been improved or replaced by a sufficient alternative?

Touch Screens: Putting a tiny touch screen keyboard on a dinky plastic rectangle is the worst way to exchange text messages I've ever seen. Constantly mashing other buttons and not being sure you wrote what you meant. Sure you can do a lot more with your phone but at what cost?? But I'm in way too deep now to go back to a flip phone with buttons and numbers on it

The internet: Pretty big blanket statement here, but many peoples real lives and internet lives are becoming one in the same. People are openly talking about imgur and reddit and tumblr, websites where pretty much everyone is a moderate leftist non-religious nothing that mostly agrees unanimously about views on the same topics. Also google searching is the worst. I hope something far more intuitive will replace the internet just so it can become this sort of post apocalyptic wasteland with a bunch of outdated information and be cool again. I don't know what will, but a man can dream.

Uh, good?

Trying to pretend that "the internet" and "real life" were two separate spheres was always wrong, and I'm glad the concept is starting to erode.

I'm sorry what? No. The internet is full of endless political bitching from a very wide political spectrum. Even places like tumblr where people are generally one side of the political spectrum you still have people endless bitching by people trying to out concern each other in some concern Olympics.

They are two separate spheres. The internet provides to you a wider array of communication and a wider social net but will always be a vastly inferior way of interacting with people than actual in person interaction.

We need more achievements. Also memes have been around since humans started any form of complex communication, have fun with getting rid of that.

The traditional office:

I wish I could just work from home, but so should every office worker, as long as they have access to a secure laptop provided by their company. Some would argue that it would bring down efficiency. But if you don't do your job, you get your ass fired regardless; so that's not a viable argument imo. People would save a ton of money on gas (also should be obsolete), save themselves a lot of aggravation from rush hour, and actually have some semblance of freedom. Not to mention all the other bullshit you need to spend money on for work, like clothes, and food. No doubt there should at least be a day out of the week where people would need to congregate for meetings. Maybe they could even make it worth while, like everyone meets up for a breakfast or luncheon, before discussing business. But even with today's technology, we don't really need to have office buildings anymore. Further, the companies would save a lot of money as well; there would be no structure to maintain; air-conditioning, electricity, or heating to pay for.

EDIT: This would also drastically reduce traffic, which would in turn reduce pollution/accidents/fatalities.

Yes because the memes Roman peasants were passing around back in the day about some goat shitting, was so much more intelligent and sophisticated than cat pictures. You're talking about a species that from the time it discovered art until now has been drawing dicks on things.

Their nowadays' mass popularity and acceptance is what I wanted to become obsolete.

The only thing that kept that from happening back in the day was Roman Peasant A couldn't get on the computer and spam image macros at Carthaginian Peasant B about how much elephant penis Hannibal sucks. You're basically asking for people to stop finding dumb shit funny.

That's a good one. Password systems are pretty primitive now that they require you to fill out captchas, 5 security questions, respond to automatic emails, require that you have two numbers, four letters, two upper case and two lower case and be at least 20 characters long and change to something different every 2 weeks. There's got to be a better way to secure identities by now.

There's definitely bitching but its usually over semantics and hair splitting. The extremists usually don't get room to speak. Not that that's a bad thing, but its very uninteresting to me I guess to read how many people argue very passionately about their views that are very 'safe' and the people who disagree are doing so because theyre voluntarily choosing to misunderstand their message, sort of like what's going on right here, right now.

Finding dumb shit funny and spamming dumb shit everywhere are 2 different things, and the latter might become obsolete (as in "stop being trendy") one day.

Your responses are awesome, though. :P

Some people can work from home. The entire office workforce? Hell no.

1. When you work from home you are always more inherently distracted (doubly so if you have wife/husband/kids also at home at the same time).

2. It's unproductive when you are in a company type environment where lots of small teams work together for each person to have to constantly call or text or communicate with another person they are working with in a way that isn't "talking to the person 5 feet away from you". In person communication is always better.

3. When everyone is at the same location it is easier for managers to manage and for peer review to be done on each others work. People make mistakes, mistakes cost an ass load of money, when you are in an office environment this is mitigated.

4. The flexibility of schedule at home means that it's harder to coordinate and things can't be done as easily on the fly.

5. Balanced lives are better lives, being able to go to the office to disconnect from your home life is actually a good thing for a lot of people.

6. I don't care how much you love your significant other if you're both home all day spending time together, most people are going to get sick of each other.

Current software in general I guess? Most things you can do with the computer are still way too complicated. I want magic one button solutions to everything. Like you just press "record video" and it starts recording with good settings, codecs and all that stuff that you don't need to learn about because computers already know everything and can choose the best options by themselves.

Doomword.exe is an awesome example of a magic button program like that. Select small or big font, write the text, change the color if you want, save, that's it. Very straightforward, no million options, nothing to get confused by, zero time wasted on stuff I don't need. People keep recommending Bitmap Font Writer or that new Doom Writer thing but I don't need them when I have this awesome program that you can master in 30 seconds. I want all software made for mortal humans instead of nerds to be like that: you can easily tell the program what you want without reading tutorials or anything and quickly get what you want without having to learn about the technical details.

Ultimately, I guess it depends on the nature of the work that you are doing. If you're compelled to work with a team, than it makes sense congregate with your peers at an office. But the stuff pertaining to personal habits, and family life, is really all on the individual. I think the pros and cons pertaining to that particular subject, are pretty even with the pros and cons of the current set up. Like I said initially, if a person doesn't do their job, than they will lose it. Providing a form of escapism for the worker is not the duty of the employer.

A lot of people take online classes in college today. Honestly, my current job is a lot like an online class. I predominately have to communicate with my bosses and colleagues via e-mail; and utilize software; and exchange data. We've coordinated, and completed major projects, all online. Theses are all things that could be done at home; with the exception of meetings. But now, we've even been using gotomeeting, so maybe that could go out the window as well.

This is probably not for everyone, but it should be afforded to more people, who could make it work out for them. I think it makes sense for the worker, and the employer.

Religion and church need to be marginalized into irrelevance, just like people are doing now with other harmful/annoying things like tobacco, restricting it more and more. And while at it, sure enough, the smoking needs to go.

All that fake bulls* over here where they act as if the internet, computer use, and similar are new and an exclusive part of the new generation of kids, while more then ten years ago people like me already got homework trough the internet, schools had standard internet access, libraries, we had shock sites, boys sneaked porn on their screens behind teachers their backs, we drank, some smoked, there where dugs, etc...

I am disgusted by all this fake trash where they turn eveything into 'its brand new for the kids.' Politicians or people in their 40's with severely obsolete points of view should get a mental revision on the history and the long running existence of modern life.

I also hope that kids in the future will feel less of a need to constantly prove their legitimacy within social groups, to gain acceptance. Like trying to prove that they KNOW EVERYTHING about music/games/drugs/sex/fighting/ etc.

Edit: People who grew up in the 1970s told me that back then, not many people were proactive in trying to be "cool". It was really only a small portion of the population that had a cool sense of style and behavior. Now, everyone thinks they're a bad ass, until they finally meet one.

And it's leading us to a generation of unemployables that sit and stare at their phone all day instead of doing anything of value. I've worked with these bums and watched them come and go, day in and day out for a few years now and it's kind of sad in a way.

20 years ago I was in 7th grade and we all had to use the internet to do research for our anne frank reports and it wasn't even really considered that amazing at the time.

Facebook, selfie stick and other useless crap(you get the idea) that exist only to serve one purpose:" hey look at me, I'm very important" I prefer meeting people in person or calling them on phone. Internet is good but spending all your social time there is just blatant. Thank the maker, nowadays more people are abandoning facebook

Hunting in the Oregon Trail was probably the coolest thing about computer class back then. The computer in the art room had Myst, which was pretty interesting in those days.
