MeetyourUnmaker Posted April 5, 2015 I'm looking for atmospheric wads, stuff like Unloved and Doom 64 are good. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jaxxoon R Posted April 5, 2015 E2M4 Redux was rather atmospheric, very much so. It has the best foliage I've ever seen in a Doom level. It goes from a nuclear holding area to waterworks and then to a lobby of some sorts complete with bathroom and onto a pretty hydroponic garden. http://www.prodigal-game.com/doomwads.html 0 Share this post Link to post
RUSH Posted April 5, 2015 Obligatory Asylum of the Wretched. Still one of my favorite maps ever made: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?file=levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/aotw.zip 0 Share this post Link to post

Cupboard Posted April 5, 2015 void.wad by cyb ZDoom Community Project Take 2 by various tvr!.wad serpent.wad for Hexen <-- highly recommended for its character leveling system, new spells, and extra weapons for all characters, not to mention hordes of new enemies and wicked puzzles. If nothing else you can get immersed in how truly large a dungeon-scape The Ultimate Doomer created. I remember playtesting this one summer for him 5 years ago. I gave my left nut in how much feedback I gave to him to improve it, and I think he really created something special for Hexen lovers out there. Ahem, but for Doom stuff, see my recommendations above. 0 Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted April 5, 2015 I'd immediately recommend Doxylamine Moon and ALT.WAD if you're looking for moody Doom levels. Two of my faves for exactly that reason. ALT.WAD's more subdued soundset, crazy plot, desolate train stations, "GOD IS DEAD"-ness and weird dreamlike progression makes it one of the best "adventure" level sets ever made to me. edit: the BTSX train stations come a close second place, love that music 0 Share this post Link to post
Avoozl Posted April 5, 2015 Also there's Back to the Fire and The Toxic Exodus done by Simon666 which have atmospheres similar to PSX Doom/Doom 64. Brotherhood of Ruin has a good Mayan/Aztec ruins atmosphere. Suspended in Dusk has quite a nice bleak atmosphere. 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted April 5, 2015 Yeah, nothing beats ALT and Sacrament I think. 0 Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted April 5, 2015 Arcadia Demade (large single map, remake of a Bioshock map, brilliantly unsettling) Hellbound (megawad with lots of impressive scenery and dark tone) 0 Share this post Link to post
Breezeep Posted April 5, 2015 Valhalla has some impressive visuals and atmospheric music too. 0 Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted April 5, 2015 Try out Threshold of Pain, created by scalliano. It's very much in the spirit of the PSX/64 versions of Doom, and highly atmospheric. 0 Share this post Link to post
Havoc Crow Posted April 5, 2015 Check these older threads with recommendations of atmospheric wads: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/8873-what-is-the-most-atmospheric-wad-you-have-ever-played/ http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/15414-most-atmospheric-sp-wads/ http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/59241-most-atmospheric-wads/ And these threads focus specifically on horror wads: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/71523-looking-for-good-horror-wads/ http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/45854-doom-maps-with-creepy-as-hell-atmos/ http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/34134-scariest-maps/ Off the top of my head: Deus Vult and the middle/late maps of Deus Vult II are good at creating an atmosphere of oppression and being deep, deep in Hellish territory. Oh--an old obscure ZDoom level called Barista is quite eerie at times as well. Tei Tenga seemed atmospheric back when I first played it all these years ago but I don't know if it holds up now that the novelty's worn off. 0 Share this post Link to post

VGamingJunkie Posted April 5, 2015 It isn't available for download in any form, yet, but I suggest keeping an eye out on Total Chaos. It's very promising. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta1EGfCQN4Y#t=54s 0 Share this post Link to post
esselfortium Posted April 5, 2015 One that I have fond memories of is RTC-3057 hub 1, for the storytelling, aesthetics, and especially Julian's work on the soundtrack. The gameplay gets remarkably switch-hunty, but I found it immersive in spite of that. RottKing's level Bite from BTSX episode 2 is also very atmospheric to me. The dim underground aesthetic and cruel gameplay work together really well to create a dank, oppressive, evil locale. ( And maybe the music too :-) ) Some others that come to mind for memorably well-crafted distinct, immersive locales: Reconstruction/Decomposition (Da Werecat/mrthejoshmon) Thunderpeak Powerplant (Vader) Monster Hunter 1 and 2 (didy) 0 Share this post Link to post
DeathevokatioN Posted April 27, 2015 Alien Vendetta had a ridiculously high amount of maps that had an amazing atmosphere, and each of them strike a different chord with me... Beast Island for example had a melancholic and explorational atmosphere... the viewpoint where you see the castle in the distance had a lasting effect on me, and each of Kim's levels had moments that made my jaw drop, and his levels had a very eery and haunting feeling that was achieved through his dramatic lighting.. there's ofcourse more maps in AV like Nemesis but I think I'm preaching to the choir. :P 0 Share this post Link to post
SFoZ911 Posted April 27, 2015 I think "The Muscus Flow"(CC2 MAP24) is by far my most favorite map in terms of atmosphere. The midi track plus the map itself feels amazing every time I play. 0 Share this post Link to post

I'd toss a vote in for phobos: anomaly reborn as well, but I might just be a sucker for dark/void areas. 0 Share this post Link to post
ella guro Posted May 5, 2015 Memfis said:Yeah, nothing beats ALT and Sacrament I think. agreed. though maps 4 and (i think 5, whichever the puzzle one is) of Hell Ground are good choices too. and Monster Hunter pts 1 and 2 i like a lot. also maybe this thread would be at least somewhat relevant here: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/61039-odd-unique-surreal-architecturally-unconventional-maps/ 0 Share this post Link to post
gaspe Posted May 6, 2015 The Talosian Incident. For a true 90's experience. 0 Share this post Link to post
Johnatone Posted May 6, 2015 MassMouth 2. If you're looking for atmosphere you can't go wrong here. Massmouth is great as well, of course. :) 0 Share this post Link to post

I really gotta finish playing this someday. Got stuck in one of the early levels for a long time due to a key hidden in secret location (and no hints to that location). Spent so many hours walking around aimlessly all over the map trying to find that damn key. Other than that part, it was great stuff! 0 Share this post Link to post

zap610 Posted May 10, 2015 Grove. Foreverhood. I honestly found Unloved pretty overrated. The mapping just seemed... Generic. Like any basic "spooky" level with the right textures but without that extra something to be special. 0 Share this post Link to post

IIRC it was map03 or map04, I remember it as a pretty frustrating level; but after that level it's really worth to play this wad imo.
