Lost Wads

Recommended Posts

I found some of the wads, such as Dark Tartarus series and TOT COMICS wads by Joe Anderson, on mancubus.net and doomwadstation.net.

OK, and why is this noteworthy, or what's the point of this thread? If you have found them there, then anyone would find them there too if he was looking for them.

I'm not sure which file are you asking about - his naming convention went back and forth. I have a totcdoom from 2010 which looks definitely vanilla; I have a tcdoomrm from 2012 which is what is listed at the top of the page you linked; and I have the totcdoom from 2014 which was the file linked in that page - the last version in the archives. The last two say "doom95.exe or any sourceport". Here's all three.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/au70x1acpkft42u/totcdoom-2010.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/download/adqd3dcabvw6et5/tcdoomrm-2012.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/download/8e8zm4xlpxmahad/totcdoom-2014.zip

BTW, it's not just TOT Comics Doom that's gone. ALL of his maps seem to have disappeared from the archives. I have no idea how many he made and with a name like 'Joe Anderson', Googling is pointless.

Here's one more deleted file I found in my idgames folder.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/2coj77mmie5zx8x/dreadv99.zip

Edit: I actually have two more deleted maps by him, orbital1 and sanityv1, but it sounded like you were specifically interested in vanilla maps.

Thanks for posting those! I also looked on mancubus and found just this one file:
ftp://mancubus.net/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/totcdoom.zip

Seems to be the same as the 2010 version you posted (CRC-32 checksums match). In the TXT file he also mentions ORBITAL1.wad and SANITYV1.wad, but not DREADV99.wad or others.

His websites are gone, but one of them is archived here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20140821012048/http://www.totcomicsdoom.com/doom-ii-mods/
I guess ORBITAL1 must be a ZDoom WAD or something, because there seems to be slopes around the far door in the first screenshot.

There was also some interesting stuff here, but it sounds like it's for another game engine entirely:
http://web.archive.org/web/20140821012132/http://www.totcomicsdoom.com/tot-comics-games/
In any case, all the file links on the archived pages are dead.

It really sucks that nice things like this are getting deleted.

Here's the wads I know of from the archive -

/levels/doom2/0-9/3dbox.wad "If wow.wad had a brother his name would be 3dbox."
/levels/doom2/a-c/castle.wad "The demons have taken an ancient castle, and it's your job to get it back."
/levels/doom2/d-f/dreadv99.wad "This is the first map to a something or another that I was working on but may not finish."
/levels/doom2/ports/a-c/cstlezd.wad (updated ZDoom version of castle.wad)
/levels/doom2/ports/m-o/orbital1.wad "Well It would seem the notorious Joe Anderson has made another map."
/levels/doom2/ports/p-r/ruinsqc5.wad "RUINS takes place slightly before the events of Ultimate Doom."
/levels/doom2/ports/s-u/sanityv1.wad "Sanity is my attemp at taking Doom and making it into something new."
/levels/doom2/ports/s-u/totcdoom.wad "It was a peaceful day on the base, you were sitting in the lounge watching T.V, when all of a sudden a bunch of monsters appeared and started killing and breaking everything."
/levels/doom2/s-u/tcdoomrm.wad (TOT COMICS DOOM REMASTERED)
/levels/doom2/s-u/timewrp2.wad "This wad is crap."
/levels/doom2/s-u/timewrp3.wad "Silly sauce."
/levels/doom2/s-u/timewrp4.wad "Coincidentally, the author of this wad plays doom."
/levels/doom2/s-u/totcdoom (the 2010 version)

There's also a few that don't appear to have reached /idgames for one reason or another -

Time Warp - timewarp.wad "Taking place during doom 2, the experiments on Phobos have opened portals in a swamp on earth."
UAC Counterattack - war.wad "This is my first doom wad, so it may not be the best in the world but it's fun"
Water Works - waterwrk.wad "First let me say unlike the rest of my work WATER WORKS is the best and the one you should play."

If anyone's looking to complete their Joe Anderson wad collection, let me know so I can start posting links.

I'm interested in that second one (castle.wad), and any of the non-uploaded ones if they're for vanilla or Boom.
I grabbed his timewrp* series and 3dbox.wad from mancubus.

@GreyGhost - Thank you for the list! Now that I knew what to look for, turns out I had all the files from the archive and two of the three not posted there. I'll just post the non-archive ones for hex11.

In the timewarp text file, the author tells people to play "SMARTY LAB ABANDONMENT @ totcomics.webs.com". Don't know if that's a lost Doom file or another of his custom games.

Don't know why timewarp didn't make it to the archives, but in waterwrk, the author replaced eleven sprites and rather than telling people to use deutex to append the rest of the Doom sprites, he included all of them in the wad. I removed the original Doom sprites from the version I'm posting. That also makes the file 90% smaller and non-vanilla.

I'm also posting the originals of the rest of the timewarp series for hex11. The copies at mancubus and doomwadstation are the updated ones from 2012 where the author deleted the graphics, stripped the map headers and added a dummy MAP01 to try and destroy his work. I remember TimeOfDeath did something similar, but I think he did it to get rid of the old demos in those files. I know he's re-uploaded all his files since.

I have to say something here. I understand servers crashing and websites going away, but when an author's complete oeuvre disappears at once, it's obviously because the author requested it. While I respect an author's absolute right to control his creative works, trying to 'scrub' yourself from the internet is never a good idea, even if you're running for Higher Office. We've all done things we're less than proud of. Own it and move on. Someone will always have proof of what you did. Trying to erase yourself just draws more attention to you. So unless Joe Anderson is now working for Blizzard, I don't know why did it. If I cared enough, I'd try to contact him. He used to post here as 'fatal error', but hasn't in about four years.

Anyway, stuff.

I guess this thread was useful after all. Thanks, joshescue18!

Edit: I shouldn't, but the completeist gremlin in my head is telling me to ask for a copy of 'war'. Because.

Probably a custom game, here's a let's play of another "SMARTY LAB" title:

Smarty Lab Abandonment is also a Game Maker 7 game (according to the author), the source of which is currently available from YoYo Games.

Never_Again got in ahead of me with castle.wad and EffinghamHuffnagel has posted two of the others, so here's UAC Counterattack (war.wad) to round out the set.

After reading that onemandoom review, I want to give that remaster a shot someday. Especially now that its being scrubbed by the author.

I am guessing that the Gaming Garbage youtube playthrough of some of his stuff led to personal embarassment and a desire to scrub these elements of his past from the internet.
