Budoka Posted August 27, 2015 We all know full megawads are a common exercise, but some are more famous than others. My goal here is to find out about every single one, for which I will need your help because the way the archive is organized does not make this easy. Note that the WAD must contain at least 36/32 custom maps to qualify. It may have more, of course, but it may not have less. As in, there must be no stock levels accessible, be it through cheating or otherwise. However, don't misunderstand. I'm not saying shorter Pwads are not worthy of attention. Hell, my favorites of all time respectively have only 13 maps (Vanguard) and 7 maps (Hell Ground). But simply put, the hunt for "full megawads" is what I am focused on in this particular endeavor. Out of the ones I got so far, it's interesting to consider that there exists over 100 full replacements, and that no less than seven were already available before Final Doom was even released. Here is the list, sorted by release date: 1995-11-19 Heroes 1995-11-20 Cleimos II 1995-12-18 H2H-Xmas 1995-12-X Memento Mori 1996-02-28 Heroes 2 1996-03-22 Icarus: Alien Vanguard 1996-04-04 Big Crappy Shit Megawad 1996-05-31 TNT Evilution 1996-05-31 The Plutonia Experiment 1996-06-03 Chambers of Death 1996-06-X Perdition's Gate 1996-06-X Hell to Pay 1996-07-27 Memento Mori II 1996-08-01 32 1996-08-25 Hell in Hell 1996-12-19 Realm of Chaos 1997-02-05 Hell Revealed 1997-03-27 Doom 32 1997-07-04 Requiem 1997-07-11 PIR WAD 1997-09-14 S.T.R.A.I.N 1997-11-14 Eternal Doom III 1997-11-27 Invasion 1998-01-01 Doom 2099 Add-on 1998-02-12 The Twilight Zone 1998-03-15 Invasion 2 1998-04-17 Cyberdreams 1998-04-24 Project X 1998-06-04 Herian 1998-06-11 Dimensions of Time 1998-10-19 MarsWar 1999-03-11 Vengeance 1999-05-07 Enjay Zdoom (arguably a duplicate) 1999-05-18 The SpawnSQuads 1999-05-28 Squonker 2 1999-08-26 Twilight Zone II: Final Dreams ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2000-01-28 Herian 2 2000-03-17 Demonfear 2000-09-10 Phouse 2000-10-09 TOONS for Doom 2 2000-10-10 The SpawnSQuad 2000 2000-11-19 The World of Deth - From Heaven to Hell 2000-11-26 10 Sectors 2000-12-20 DSV3-War 2001-01-13 10 Sectors part 2 2001-02-24 Enjay Zdoom 2001 2002-08-30 2002: A Doom Odyssey (has now been revamped, but let's keep things simple and use the date of the original archive upload in these situations) 2002-12-26 Alien Vendetta 2003-01-18 Revolution! 2003-02-09 Project Mars Base 2003-04-24 The Vilecore 2003-04-27 JyEpiBest 2003-06-13 The Community Chest Project 2003-07-28 The Rebirth 2003-10-04 Scythe 2003-11-20 Mock 2: The Speed of Stupid 2003-12-22 Bella II 2003-12-10 Daedalus: Alien Defense 2003-12-31 Hell Revealed II 2004-01-29 Batman Doom 2004-02-01 Garrulismo 2004-03-24 VileFlesh 2004-09-27 Hellcore 2004-12-06 Community Chest 2 2004-12-24 Super Sonic Doom 2005-03-09 Kama Sutra 2005-06-01 32 Hours in Pain 2005-06-06 Scythe II 2005-12-02 Congestion 1024 2005-12-02 Beyond The Hell 2005-12-07 Congestion 64 2006-01-08 NewDoom Community Project 2006-02-20 Armadosia: The Mad Corridor 2006-05-13 Mega Trickster's Mistake Unreality With Stupid 2006-03-23 The New Adventure 2006-05-08 NeoDoom 2007-07-31 32in24 II: Single Player 2007-10-02 The Last Joke 2007-11-21 Community Chest 3 2008-03-09 Community is Falling 3 2008-07-15 Tarakannik 2008-12-31 Plutonia 2 2009-03-30 Ultimate Doom 2 2009-04-13 Wonderful Doom 2009-04-29 NewDoom Community Project 2 2009-06-17 Claustrophobia 1024 2009-07-18 The Great Bicycle Mystery 2 2009-08-09 Heroes' Tales 2009-08-25 Mini-level Megawad 2009-09-05 Killing Adventure 2009-10-11 Doom 2 Reloaded 2009-12-12 Whispers of Satan 2009-12-28 Necropia Zone --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2010-01-08 Claustrophobia 1024 2: The Mystery of Too Many Maps 2010-03-28 Speed of Doom 2010-04-05 Star Wars: Chibi Rebellion 2010-09-24 Prayers of Armageddon 2010-11-08 Stronghold: On The Edge of Chaos 2010-11-25 Epic 2 2010-12-23 Arch-Vile Jump 2011-02-20 Doom 2 Unleashed 2011-02-26 Tarakannik 2 2011-04-17 Fragport 2011-04-19 Plutonia: Revisited Community Project 2011-07-23 The Last Revenger 2011-08-20 1994 Tune-Up Community Project 2011-09-16 Doom Core 2011-11-15 Reverie 2011-11-27 Jenesis 2011-11-12 Khorus's Speedy Shit 2012-01-02 Eviltech: Soul of Megawad 2012-02-12 Slaughterfest 2011 2012-02-12 DTS-T 2012-05-06 A.L.T 2012-05-18 Zones of Fear 2012-07-02 Survive in Hell 2012-08-08 Expired License 2012-10-19 Community Chest 4 2012-12-27 Castle Doom 2013-01-12 Hell Awakened 2013-01-16 Interception 2013-02-24 Hadephobia 2013-02-26 3 Heures d'Agonie 2013-03-01 Doomworld Mega Project 2012 2013-04-10 Dark Tartarus: Dead Tonight 2013-06-17 Temple of the Lizard Men 3 2013-06-25 Doom 2 in a Nutshell 2013-06-27 Damnation 2013-06-29 Hellbound 2013-07-30 Slaughterfest 2012 2013-08-16 100 lines 2013-10-06 Zone 300 2013-12-15 Unholy Realms 2013-12-16 Dance 2013-10-25 WOOO 2013-12-23 Doom 2 the Way Id Did 2014-02-14 And The Bloodshed Began 2014-02-22 Nova: The Birth 2014-03-03 Whitemare 2 2014-04-15 PIR 2 2014-04-30 Countdown to Exctinction 2014-06-14 Doom 2 in name only 2014-06-17 1024: ABC Edition 2014-07-08 200 minutes of /vr/ 2014-07-22 Doom IIII 2014-09-01 WOOO 2 2014-09-09 ESP 2014-09-23 Resurgence 2014-10-28 Switcheroom 2014-11-02 Going Down 2014-11-20 MAYhem 2048 2014-11-30 3 heures d'agonie 2 2015-01-18 32in24-14: How the Hamburglar Stole Christmas 2015-03-08 Plutonia 1024: The Plutinya Experiment 2015-03-12 Before the Nightmare (terrywad) 2015-05-30 Valiant 2012-06-17 Restoring Deimos 2015-06-17 Endless Torture 2015-06-17 Kitana's Castle 2015-07-16 Five Rooms of Doom 2015-08-09 Sunlust 2015-11-28 Nova II: New Dawn 2016-01-01 Bloodstain 0 Share this post Link to post
franckFRAG Posted August 27, 2015 This list can be a good indicator about number of megawads created each year. :) You forgot : Survive in Hell And The Bloodshed Began Endless Torture 0 Share this post Link to post
gaspe Posted August 27, 2015 Here's another one. Edit: also on Kmxexii's blog you can sort the wads by the number of levels and check if there are some that are missing on your list. 0 Share this post Link to post
Budoka Posted August 27, 2015 List updated. Gaspe: Good idea, will do. 0 Share this post Link to post

Salt-Man Z Posted August 27, 2015 What about 27-level WADs that run on Doom 1 as opposed to Ultimate Doom? 0 Share this post Link to post
Havoc Crow Posted August 27, 2015 I'm assuming only single-player wads are eligible (no DM mapsets)? 32.wad PIR WAD PIR2 Restoring Deimos Armadosia The Mad Corridor Come to think of it, have you already looked through all the "/megawads" and "Ports/megawads" folders on /idgames? I see several pwads in there missing from your list. 32 over 32 and Another 32 over 32 contain 32 levels, but each level is in a separate wad file, I assume that doesn't count? 0 Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted August 27, 2015 100 Lines Switcheroom I suppose that Doomworld Mega Project 2013 (54 maps) and 2014 (37 maps) don't qualify because the maps are separated into multiple wads? 0 Share this post Link to post
Budoka Posted August 27, 2015 TheMionicDonut: removed. JudgeDeadd: both your guesses are correct. Scifista: afraid so, mainly because the separate wads are not complete. Everyone: give me a few minutes and I'll add the rest. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted August 27, 2015 It doesn't try to be a list of absolutely everything because it's supposed to only be "notable" wads, but take a look at this and notice that, if you have javascript enabled, you can sort by the "maps" column to easily get all the 32+ and 36+ wads grouped together. 0 Share this post Link to post
snapshot Posted August 27, 2015 Back to Saturn X Episode 1 Back to Saturn X Episode 2 31 Maps though. 0 Share this post Link to post
Havoc Crow Posted August 27, 2015 Before the Nightmare ^ BTSX 1-2 actually has even less than 31 maps, so they don't count. 0 Share this post Link to post

Thanks, but I already checked that. Judge: I'm hesitant to bother adding that kind of material, but if Big Crappy Shit Megawad counts, then I suppose that must also count. 0 Share this post Link to post

Noiser Posted August 27, 2015 This is great to preserve the community history! It's very useful too. Thanks for doing it. 0 Share this post Link to post
PsychoGoatee Posted August 27, 2015 Though a lot of the best WADs have less than 32 levels. Not to nitpick, but I think the "full" thing is a bit subjective, and having to have 32 levels is usually a downside creatively. Plus according to the definition of megawad you find, it says 15 or more levels. 0 Share this post Link to post

PsychoGoatee Posted August 27, 2015 Everybody doesn't have to agree. Your opening post by having a different view than mine doesn't "address" my post. You could've picked a different number, and oddly enough Doom 2 would've been an even better game if they cut out a few of the weaker levels. Then maybe everybody would be shooting for 28 level megawads. Just a random thought. It's not hard to find a ton of 32 level megawads. If the point is a particularly inclusive huge list, having such a specific thing limiting it to me limits the appeal of such a list. Just another viewpoint, you don't have to agree with it. I understand why you chose to make the list the way you did, attaching importance to reaching 32 levels. I just posted some food for thought. 0 Share this post Link to post
7hm Posted August 27, 2015 Kitana Goes Doom 2 Phouse - The Great Arena - 32 maps, but 2 of the maps are DM. Swift Death isn't actually released, though I thought it had been (because of the kmx review). It'll need to be be added shortly though. e: I'll pimp this thing again, because posts like this one get me to go back and upload new versions / work on it a bit. http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/68764-map-specific-batch-loader/ 0 Share this post Link to post
PsychoGoatee Posted August 27, 2015 7hm said:Phouse - The Great Arena - 32 maps, but 2 of the maps are DM. According to the rules of this topic, that WAD is thrown into a dungeon somewhere. :P I kid, they'll probably accept it. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted August 28, 2015 Budoka said:no less than seven were already available before Final Doom was even released. Here's three more - the Chambers of Death trilogy for Ultimate Doom. To echo Salt-Man Z, how about allowing 27 map megawads that predate Ultimate Doom (May 1995)? 0 Share this post Link to post
Budoka Posted August 28, 2015 You could've picked a different number The problem being, replacing every original map is the only objective benchmark I can use. If i start including "incomplete" (for lack of a better word) WADs, at which point do I draw the line ? It would eventually become a list of every single Pwad in existence, which serves no purpose at it is the very function of the Idgames archive. Also, in case you haven't noticed, this list is in no way concerned with quality control. I don't think these are the best WADs ever made or anything (I already told which ones I believe to be the best). In fact, a few of them are well known for being total shit. But that's not a relevant factor here, and thus they are included. It's not hard to find a ton of 32 level megawads. The goal is not to merely find "a ton", it is to find *every* 36/32/more levels megawad that is still available somewhere. EDIT: Added Kitana's Chamber and Phouse for now, but are there any specific reasons why they're not available on the archive, or are they just oversights ? On the other hand, I'm not going to add unreleased projects, especially if they're hghly susceptible to further revision. As for Salt-Z man's idea (missed your post until now, sorry), the problem is that in 99% of cases the Pwad would be run through the Ultimate Doom IWAD regardless. To be honest, I've long considered the original version of the game to be altogether obsolete, and it puzzles me outright that some people still use it as a basis for reviewing. Regarding Chambers of Death, the text file doesn't give me a whole lot to go on so I'll have to check it out first. EDIT: Yup, valid. Guess the author loved filing out lots of maps. 0 Share this post Link to post

You could include 27 level ones and up for example, to accommodate ones made for Doom, as a couple people pointed out. Or in the case of one you just included with 30 SP levels, stuff like that. Just saying in my opinion it wouldn't need to be a strict 32 level thing. Even if it was a list of say every WAD of over 20 levels, it'd still be significant. And again, this is just another opinion in a topic. You don't have to even reply to it if you don't want to, it's no big thing. S'all good. Could always put some parenthesis next to ones with less than 32 saying how many they have, and you'd still have the 32 list your looking for with some bonus stuff in there as well. That to me personally would be a better list, since I think the 32 number is an arbitrarily strict thing. Doesn't mean you're listing every WAD every made either. It's subjective, but I don't see where the problem is here. I guess that's why we disagree. Thy Flesh Consumed is it's own thing, released after Doom 2. Doom is a three episode game, with a bonus expansion added later. 0 Share this post Link to post
