Pharma company raises price on drug used to treat life-threatening infections 5500%

Recommended Posts

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/21/business/a-huge-overnight-increase-in-a-drugs-price-raises-protests.html

Specialists in infectious disease are protesting a gigantic overnight increase in the price of a 62-year-old drug that is the standard of care for treating a life-threatening parasitic infection.

The drug, called Daraprim, was acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up run by a former hedge fund manager. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“What is it that they are doing differently that has led to this dramatic increase?” said Dr. Judith Aberg, the chief of the division of infectious diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She said the price increase could force hospitals to use “alternative therapies that may not have the same efficacy.”

Turing’s price increase is not an isolated example. While most of the attention on pharmaceutical prices has been on new drugs for diseases like cancer, hepatitis C and high cholesterol, there is also growing concern about huge price increases on older drugs, some of them generic, that have long been mainstays of treatment.

The CEO's response:

<Bloodshedder> isn't it actually literally his fault
<Marcaek> we get it he's an asshole
<Linguica> a guy in another channel apparently knew him from a MUD
<Marnetmar> are you serious
<Linguica> the guy paid $5000 for a MUD character and ended up getting banned for role-playing giving someone a non consensual blowjob

My kind of guy. In the original Jurassic Park novel, Hammond, the billionaire, said that he originally wanted to make a cancer pill, but he cancelled research when he found out people would try to stop him from selling it for millions of dollars.

This guy is almost real life John Hammond, but without prehistoric bird-lizards.

If it where up to the capitalist extremists we would have been living in a derivative of the Third Reich with its own version of the Ubermensch philosophy ever since 1960.

generalized capitalist extremist ;
"Who cares if people suffer, they are inferior and need to feel honoured because they where allowed to pay or work for us."

"Socialist and liberal rage"
Funny how the worst sort of human garbage so often makes an enemy of the left these days. Nothing makes me prouder than to be something this guy hates.

Infect him with diseases until he goes bankrupt treating himself.

To hell with those that wish to plunge the world back into pre-union Industrial Revolution England. May they boil in the phlegm of the ill.

The drug is a generic, its manufacturing process is already known so cases like this open up spots in market for new companies. These companies would start selling such generic drugs at much lesser prices and thus dominate the market over these overprizing stunts.

E: just noticed it's mentioned in the article anyway.

There are some people out there claiming this is "beneficial"

Ugh

They had their PR guy on TV about 15 minutes ago calling it "altruistic."

I hope this happens sooner rather than later. I bet a bajillion dollars this douchebag tries to sue them for some sort of patent infringement when it does, looking forward to seeing him lose that case pathetically.

Won't happen anytime soon, at least not in the US where Turing Pharma control the drug's distribution. At least there won't be any patent shenanigans, since they've long since expired.

The rights are only exclusive to the generic itself and its distribution, they have no rights over the active substance that anybody ballsy and rich could catch on. However, it takes roughly a year of testing that is applied to all new generics, so it won't happen sooner than that, if at all, because the drug itself is actually not that prestigious from pharmaceutical point of view. Pyrimethamine is rarely used in modern modicine.

What an utter piece of shit. This is a clear case of what I call "Jew Capitalism", which is outrageously upmarking the price for no apparent reason.

Stuff like this irritates me to no end, thus why I said this.

Why raise the price fifty-fold? What is the point? If it's to make money and nothing else, people will just go to other AIDS drugs instead.

As a Jew I can confirm that Mr. Chris is right about this "Jew Capitalism". We spend all day thinking of new ways to exploit hardworking Christian folk/steal their money.

Woe the day when someone thinks penicillin needs to be 5000% pricier than normally.

Well one day soon, every single pathogen will be immune to penicillin, so same difference

If people let the TPP pass, you can say goodbye to generic drugs and say hello to overpriced medications across the board.
