Hellbent Posted October 15, 2015 Keplar Telescope recently spotted a unique star with orbiting stuff that isn't consistent with any conventional explanation (such as debris, planetesimals or planets), making a lot of people speculate there are megastructures built around it by an alien civilization. :) Here is a good intro onto the topic without the wild speculations: http://time.com/4074957/flickering-star-aliens/ Here is a more sensationalistic treatment of the data, included because it (ironically) has a Doomish font at the top of the webpage: http://www.catholic.org/news/green/story.php?id=64781 0 Share this post Link to post
zZaRDoZz Posted October 16, 2015 As one of the articles probably states, comets have yet to be ruled out as an explanation. 0 Share this post Link to post
AndrewB Posted October 16, 2015 Completely ridiculous. Can't figure out where we went wrong so we'll just jump to the most ridiculous conclusion imaginable. This is what the field of astronomy has been reduced to. 0 Share this post Link to post
dio Posted October 16, 2015 Whatever it takes to click a link. We'd probably hear aliens before we see them. 0 Share this post Link to post

This is what the field of astronomy has been reduced to. We haven't. We've just ruled out most of the ideas of what this might be. As zZaRDoZz said, a large number of disturbed comets haven't been ruled out entirely, and the possibility of this being an artificial structure is simply a hypothesis based on the data we currently have. It's entirely possible we'll watch this star for a few years, collect more data, and conclude it's something totally mundane. Or be just as stumped as we are now. It's unlikely, but we might even prove this alien construct hypothesis. That's how science works. 0 Share this post Link to post

HavoX Posted October 17, 2015 Great, just what we needed; more proof that aliens are plotting to kill us all. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cupboard Posted October 17, 2015 We are all alone. There are other creatures. But we are still alone. So are they. 0 Share this post Link to post

Quasar Posted October 17, 2015 We should definitely hail it immediately with aggressive messages of human friendliness. Who cares if it might actually be a giant space death laser that blows up stars, built by a fanatically religious alien cult 100k years ago to eliminate any competition from other sentients (which is why we've never been contacted by any - they all got blown up by this thing first) :P :P :P 0 Share this post Link to post
