Distorted Carmack

Ben 'Bigdog' Swarts, of the Doom Center team, let us know he finally had Carmack's QuakeCon speech compressed (5 mp3 files, 40.5 MB in total). Unfortunatly, the recording seems to be of really poor quality, so he is looking for a sound editing master. Don't hesitate to drop him a line if you think you can help.

Had this exact problem last year when we (LinuxGames) recorded Carmack's keynote... I won't name any names (ADNAN!), but the mic volume was way too low, so we were left with a very poor initial recording. Fortunately, Jer Sypult is a sound genius (Quake 2 track 10, Mindgrid:Audio for Q3, Combat Q3 sounds, Doom remixes) and cleaned it up for us...

I'll see if Jer is interested in tackling this problem for a second year...

Does his voice even matter, considering how important the guy is? You're acting pretty shallow.

Yeah law youre being shallow... anyway his voice is a bit like you would expect from a mega geek. ;)

I have a radio interview with Jay Wilbur (downloaded from a Doom site) that is sooo poor you can barley understand a word. Would be interesting because Jay Wilbur defends Doom (violence in Video games) against the attcks of a journalist. That should be also send to such a sound editing master.

Looks like we have someone who has generously offered to do the editing, Fanatic - thanks a lot to you Marc! Hopefully we'll be seeing the MP3s surface at Doom Center within the next few days :)

Spoke too soon, Marc just emailed me again with some bad news, looks like Ebola (not the Ebola you guys know), who recorded the speeches from his laptop mic (ugh), didn't quite get enough quality :

"Sorry to tell you that these are not fixable. The source on all of them is so poor that there's nothing to clean up. 95% of it is pure noise."

So much for that.

It was amusing hearing how he punctuated many statements w/ a rather strange little "mmmmmhhhhh". But we've all got quirks, don't we?

Carmack has always been a class act. He always gives his worthier competitors their due props, & he makes the very smart decision of sticking w/ his strengths & continuing to excel in them, & gracefully conceding other areas where his expertise does not lie.

He is a noentity.
