total conversions

it seems on the newer games u never hear of any finished or at least any true total conversions for games. now i see mostly MODS not TC's and they are all online play. I miss the days of more single player fun with the TC's and they are usally very good and complete. Quake1 had a few good ones <ypod>, but it quickly died out for the new MOD's. 2 resons i think caused this was the popularity of online games and the sizes of a tc download. A good oldschool doom TC was about at most 5 mb but a good half-life tc is over 70 mb! However the games keeping this tradition going is half-life, the most number of TC's that are released and complet. This has also had just as many MOD's too but i feel half-lifes best is in its single player action. maybey that is why i like it so much because it focuses on SP like doom more than MP. I hope doom3 goes this way, with online play as an option. I also want to see a rebirth in TC's even if they are 150+ mb downloads

I agree with what you say on Half-Life SP...its multiplayer is the absolute pits, IMO. I recall having better times beating in my groin with a maul than playing Half-Life multi. On a side note, I also say that Doom, and the Doom community, is the only game that has people consistently working on stuff that gets finished on a regular basis. I remember how, about a year, maybe longer, ago, I was thinking that the Doom community was heading for the depths of Hell itself, but here it is, still alive and kicking. Yay for longevity!

You can't compare DooM editing with full 3D games editing. There's a big difference in terms of raw data to be made.

There's tonnes of TC's being made for games like Quake 3 and Half-life, you just have to look in the right place. Plus some of the guys making TC's are a bit retarded and thinking they're actually making a MOD.

There are a few not ashamed to admit to being TC's though, such as a recently completed HL TC, "They Hunger" (http://planethalflife.com/manke), and a Q3:A TC, "Metroid 3D" (http://www.planetquake.com/metroid3d/)

afaik the term 'mod' originated around quake, with the editing of the progs.dat file... in the pre-quake doom days, modifications were either levels, PCs or TCs.

That's what Underworld is all about, bringing a new TC that won't be left unfinished. It'll be a lot like STRAIN (the amount of conversion) and have a variety of level types, not just one theme through the whole TC.

Underworld looks cool so far, but TC means EVERYTHING is changed. I noticed you have a lot of original Doom2 textures in the maps.

Not that it's a bad thing, but total means total.

I prefer partial conversions myself.
