DDF hacking

Recommended Posts

Guest DammitBeavis

Lately I've been hacking alot of DDF for no good reason. Well, I wanted to know if anyone knows where to get good DDF hacks, or where to find a text file explaining everything about it. I would go to the dosdoom page, but I heard it was down, or something. Also, it there a way to get EDGE to use the creature.ddf. I'm too stupid to figure out all your doom technical jargon... Oh yeah...

Use EDGE and the new DDF's. Creature.ddf is old DOS DOOM stuff. EDGE is now pretty tight and DDF editing is a lot easier and less buggy.

http://edge.sourceforge.net

We will be releasing a new engine update with super duper DDF and RTS documentation, not to mention some very good examples of all the new features EDGE has. So you may want to grab EDGE 1.23 and the WAD/DDF stuff, mess with it for a bit, and wait for the next release with the documentation.

You should be pleased with what you will find. :)

Very cool. I have been looking forward to this. Are you going to cover the 3D stuff in the Docs?

Oh hell yeah! I've got a demo map that should give everyone enough to look over and tear apart.

I'm used to the complexity of multiple extrafloors, e.g. in QDOOM, so I can throw together a fairly complex map in a few days.

I'm waiting on the next release to send out with EDGE. It will make sense when you see it. And as always, I'll be available to help everyone.

Oh duh, stupid me. The creature stuff was in the things.ddf the whole time. I am impressed with how damned easy it is to hack ddf. So far I've made, a grey stealth specter (I stole that idea from the guy that did Mortal Kombat doom), a mancubus weapon (which was something I always wanted to have), demons shoot imp fireball that only go so far (just like the flamethrower thingy from MK doom), and a few other stupid thingys. Oh yeah huh...

Here's the largest Doom weapon patch in existence.
http://www.geocities.com/shingokuma/doom/weap91b.zip
It'll work with DosDoom v0.65, 0.651, or 0.653. There's some faulty versions of 0.65 and I need to update it to work with EDGE.

I don't know if it's been fixed in EDGE but I couldn't get multiplayer to work with it. With all gameplay settings at default and consistent files people get kicked with inconsistency errors. When I had only a few weapons implemented, it would get inconsistent after about a minute and with finished patch one player is immediately frozen and gets kicked when he tries to fire.

Also, here's a hilarious patch
http://www.geocities.com/shingokuma/doom/petrock.zip

For more DDF fun plug in some code pointers from Deathbot in monster frames. This causes them to pick up items though. I think DosDoom v0.651 and v0.653 both have Deathbot and EDGE should. I forget exactly how I did it, but I think all you have to do is replace the CHASE code pointer with BOT_THINK

Captain Mellow made a bunch of cool DosDoom mods. http://www.doomworld.com/mellow /
