Guest Fanatic Posted August 1, 2001 What the hell happened? Seems like 60% of all files on there are gone, DOOM World files, my files, all kinds of crap. 0 Share this post Link to post

Linguica Posted August 1, 2001 No, the stuff is gone. I don't know what the fuck happened, or if it's coming back. 0 Share this post Link to post

CacodemonLeader Posted August 1, 2001 It's the Code Red Virus! It striked at 8:00 PM didn't it? 0 Share this post Link to post
Zeratul 982 Posted August 1, 2001 What's going on here? 1. Someone is pounding elbryan42's ftp. 2. There are 666 total topics in the general forum (the last time I checked). 3. There is a new and mysterious "Doomworld" forum for administrators only. 4. 3DDownloads is dying. Well, what's up?? 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 They OBVIOUSLY prepare backups, specially in these days when a Code Red attack WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TODAY. Maybe they just took off some of the HDs. Ling should send a mail. 0 Share this post Link to post
CacodemonLeader Posted August 1, 2001 I was sure it was going to happen today Zaldron, but I see no difference in the Speed of the Internet. 0 Share this post Link to post
DooMBoy Posted August 1, 2001 Well, I noticed that today. I was attempting to download glDoom to see if I could possibly get it working with UDoom, and it kept saying "file not found". 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 It doesn't really have to slowdown Inet, but I'm pretty sure that's actually happenning. It's just that you're not searching in the right direction. Try a "porn" search in BearShare. See how many servers respond to you. 0 Share this post Link to post
fodders Posted August 1, 2001 code red killed clan forums or some Fnord did :( 0 Share this post Link to post
Zeratul 982 Posted August 1, 2001 It's the Code Red Virus! It striked at 8:00 PM didn't it? T-minus 2:35 remaining until Code Red approaches west coast... Well, maybe not. That must mean that it happened around 5:00 PM over here. They say that there should be no problem for WinNT or 9x users. 0 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted August 1, 2001 When I told Marv about the Doomworld FTP fuckup, he had no idea what I was talking about. He said that they had deleted some accounts recently, so it is possible that for some reason which I cannot fathom, they deleted like half the stuff on the DW FTP. I don't think we have backups of it anywhere either, and even if we did, we would have to go through that terrible 3DD interface to get the new links. Hooray! 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 Conclusion : GO ASK FILES THROUGH EMAIL. This is gonna be SOOO funny. I pity all poor souls that have no backups of their works in their HDs. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted August 1, 2001 --=Stupid question warning=-- Why wouldn't you just keep your files on your website directory with your webpage data as opposed to putting them in that 3D Downloads thing? 3D Downloads is aggrivating. Going through three different links just to get a damn file is a pain. Most of the time those fancy download pages and all their graphics are bigger than the file. When pages say "click here to download" you expect a direct file link. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 Probably because of space reasons. But mostly because of the bandwidth required to act as a file database. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted August 1, 2001 I thought we got "virtually unlimited space". 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 But I'm sure as hell there's no unlimited bandwidth available. 0 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted August 1, 2001 Big binaries are supposed to go on 3DDownloads because it's an FTP server, and FTP servers are good at transfering big binaries. If all the big huge files were put on the web servers, they would eat up lots of memory keeping HTTP connections open for so long. Personally I can't stand the 3DDownloads format. It wouldn't be so bad if the files had URLS which were representative of the FTP structure, but the whole "random number" system drives me friggin insane. If the files can't be recovered, then a few things will happen: * The ports section will have to be majorly overhauled, as many of the ports we have in our lists probably don't exist anywhere else on the web. That might be a good thing anyway, since I could put all the source ports crap into a MySQL database. * The music section will be removed, since there is no way I am going to go through all those files and get their IDs again. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted August 1, 2001 Funny, I was about to ask in DooMWorld if this was going to affect DW's performance. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted August 1, 2001 Ah, OK then. I didn't know there was really a big difference in how HTTP and FTP servers handle the connections. As for the links, wouldn't it be possible to just link to the file on the FTP server without having to go through their interface? Since they have the files on the FTP server, would it be possible to just link to where the file is on their server and skip the whole number system, or do they block direct links like that? As for the music, you could probably use Elbryan's FTP server if the files did get wiped. 0 Share this post Link to post
