I have no idea.. sorry... Ask deadnail (just kidding..)

Click the 'User?' button on one of your messages and edit your profile. You'll be given the chance to upload a little .gif image that has stringent size requirements. After that email Linguica and ask him to enable it so you (and everyone else) can use it for your picture. He usually gets around to it within a month or so.

Don't worry about it being limited to 256 colors, if you make it yourself in a decent imaging program and do it right every pixel can have it's own color.

As for just putting up a picture right in your message, the usual format is...

...although support for that seems to have been broken for at least a week or so (probably Disorder's handiwork).

But don´t ask deadnail, he´s just a part timer... ;)
