Red key
Yellow skull
Light amplification goggles

I have some issues with your list, Joe.

First off, you put berserk pack very high on the list. And how do you like a medkit more than a box of rockets? /smh

My list:

Megasphere
Mega Armor
Soul Sphere
Energy Pack
Invulnerability
Green Armor
Box of Rockets
Box of Shells
Berserk Pack
Backpack
Computer Area Map
Blur Sphere
Medkit
Rad suit
Light Amp Goggles

And yet possibly still not high enough.

Rating 4 shells higher than a backpack makes no sense

Backpacks can get wasteful if you are near the maximum ammo count.

I don't understand people who post giant groups of choices in favorite lists. What's your favorite map? E1M1 E1M2 E1M3 E1M5 E1M6 E1M7 E1M8 E2M1 etc oh boy only one map isn't a favorite!

Some people just can't pick a single one, and so they make an unordered list. Other people are willing to give it a deeper thought, and so they come up with an arranged list. Lists can be interesting to read as much as a single word reply, if not more. You may argue that a single reply with an explanation why it's this one is usually even more interesting. I would argue that a list with an explanation for each entry can be even more interesting than that.

Computer map.

Mostly because it seems to be the rarest item in maps (for every 10 maps you play, maybe 1 has a computer map?), so it always feels like such an accomplishment to find it.

The clip of bullets is the most important item. Don't act like it isn't.

Out of ammo for all your weapons, no chaingun, 20% health or less, no armor, several pinkies giving chase.... And then you find that ammo box. Yah, beforehand you didn't think twice. But now it's much needed mercy and thank the level designer for your fortune.

I'm of the opinion that the green armour is probably the best item a mapper can make good use of. In easy maps it's a serious boon and viable choice for keeping in a secret, whilst in more difficult maps (or ones with a heavy hitscanner population) it's a helpful safety blanket that takes the sting out of the damage you'll be soaking up.

There's plenty of maps out there with no armour and I often really notice the absence. Things like weapon placement, ammo and health balance are essential considerations, whilst the armour adds an extra dimension.

My favourite item...the berzerk pack!
RIP AND TEAR!
Same goes for vanilla Doom/every other Doom.

I like the Tome of Power because it's an activatable at will item that actually increases the power of all of your weapons instead of just melee.

Didn't say nothing about specifically Doom items. Also Quartz flasks are better than medkits purely because of the fact you can hold onto them and use them when you need them instead of picking one up blocking a small corridor at 99% health

I don't like the green armour. It just doesn't offer enough protection against whatever Doom 2 throws at you, and you can pick it up by accident while you're still wearing the much better blue armour.

Very true, unpleasant situation, but when it happens, the blame can fall either on the level designer or the player himself. Green Armor itself is fine, being an intermediate step between no protection at all vs. blue armor's 50% protection.

Can't help it; the designer is god. If you can't avoid it, it surely is put there intentionally.

Not as rare as the light goggles. :-)

megasphere, obviously.

berserk pack for fun, if the map's difficulty allows it, otherwise it becomes a 100 hp medikit.

especially as they appear in sunlust, 1 armor bonus on a pedestal :p

Whether intentionally or not, it is still a fault, and their fault.

I'll put a different spin on the ordering and look at my recent tendencies as a mapper. They are constantly evolving, but right now:

Indispensable: Green armor, Stimpack, Rocket, Four shells, Box of bullets, Energy cell, Keys
Useful: Berserk, Medikit, Soulsphere, Ammo clip, Box of rockets, Box of shells, Health bonus, Armor bonus
Niche: Blue armor, Energy cell pack, Radiation suit, Partial invisibility
Hardly ever: Megasphere, Invulnerability, Backpack, Computer area map
Hardly ever and no interest: Light amplification goggles

No particular order within the tiers.

I was going to say the berserk is my favorite item, but I have sort of a love/hate deal with it. Strategically, it's the kind of item that should be reserved for times when you are very low on health, but I just pick it up whenever I see it, because I can't resist the urge to berserker punch imps in the face. But it often gets me into trouble, or a fire ball or two in the face in the very least. It ultimatelly does more harm than good, but I can't get enough of it. It's quite literally like a drug to me. I think I need a berserk pack intervention.
