How has Doom affected your psyche?

Recommended Posts

For me, personally, I think about the game and the franchise as a whole literally every single day. I'm not sure I couldn't, because it seems that there are subconscious provocations at work that ensure I'll eventually think about it throughout the day. I sometimes find myself wondering how real-world environments would look in-game, and a few times I have managed to fall into a brief form of cognitive dissonance in which I can't figure out how a real life building could have multiple stories. I still dream about the game on occasion (at least a few times a year), I get rather giddy if anyone even mentions the game (or the word), and talking about Doom or voluntarily thinking about it can produce a butterflies-in-the-stomach effect. Lastly, Doom's aesthetic seems to keep finding its way into my visual art and a good chunk of the electronic music I compose has a synth metal leaning that has been compared to Doom's OST several times.

Ever since Doom I headbang to ultra hard core genocide-core metal, where leather, dye my hair pitch black and where it wet and long, and plan everyday on how I'm going to destroy the world and put the worthless worms that are Humans into the ground for the well-being of Satan my Lord.

It also changed my attitudes towards baking and now I can make the cutest little Pinkie Pie Cupcakes! ~!ugu!~

I actually looked it up after I wrote the post. No specific genre, but some bands called Genocide, including a Neo-Nazi one, which is purely coincidental as far as my post goes.

Wolfenstein told me that Nazis are bad.
Doom told me that Demons are bad.

So now I know to stay away from Nazis and Demons, especially Nazi Demons.

Basically everything you said in the OP, and whenever I see a chainsaw I get all happy and think about slicing up demons. Ever since Doom my appreciation for chainsaws has gone above and beyond. It's really fucking weird, I know. Chainsaws are my cars.

I frequently think about how I could recreate certain locations I visit often within the confines of the Doom engine. Being familiar with 3D floors, room-over-room in the real world isn't something that confounds me whenever I'm daydreaming about turning a hospital into a WAD. Although it does remind me of just how tedious all that sector tagging becomes when I see all sorts of detail on the ceiling.

I feel that most goregrind/pornogrind would probably satiate your need here.

Haha, same here. Mapping every day will do that to you. It's kind of hard to get Doom out of your head when you spend a lot of time in the editor. New ideas might come at any time, especially when it's 4 am and you're trying to finally fall asleep. I actually had an idea for a similar topic recently. I was getting worried that mapping is occupying my brain too much. After I'm done mapping for the day, I want to go on to do other things but my current map in progress keeps popping up in my head, and it's actually troubling sometimes.

Same here, only I get disappointed when I realize the gameplay would be trash

That's never stopped me! I just use small bits of a map for this purpose, recreating dumb shit like waiting rooms or whatever and somewhat repurposing them to serve a function within the map.

Haha, I'm not into pornogrind. It's a bit too base.

Yeah, sometimes I've found myself incorporating bits and pieces of reality into my mapping, it's actually pretty fun.

When I'm looking around, I pay attention to misaligned "textures" in real life :-(
Like a bathroom tile that breaks his pattern in a corner, or something like this.

I see surfaces and think "I could take a picture of that and edit it into a texture" and, often, I do just that. XD

I was 11 when I first played the game and it had not long been out, but that was in Canada on extended family's machines (they sold IT). We were years away from having such equipment back home in the UK and when I came back I had major withdrawal symptoms. My Sega consoles suddenly seemed pointless. I've never found anything that addictive before or since. I'm probably past the age now where something could have that effect on me again. I also dreamt about the game in those early days, in fact I remember on the flight back a really vivid dream with an idea for a map layout with a ton of health potions leading to a star shaped pool. I tried sketching it when I got home - it hurt bad to not have a computer. Not that I had a clue how to use one then - I'd had to have the game loaded up in DOS for me.

To count what has happened since, being part of the community, people I've "met", as others have said, can't add that up really, wouldn't know where to start. Doom is the game of my life, that's for sure. I won't play another game more in my lifetime.

It inspired me to make a paper-crafted Double Barrel Shotgun, although with some cardboard, also i attempted to make a chaingun, i succeded, but i decided to demake it into an assault rifle.

It's made me realize how bizarre an FPS is without a good ol' boomstick. ROTT '95, Powerslave and all but the newest Wolfenstein game come to mind. Unreal technically has a shotgun with the flak cannon though.

I also haven't noticed such a well designed, memorable and balanced cast of foes in any other FPS.

Ever since Doom I go to the firing range waiting for the day the invasion finally happens. I've been buying rockets looking at tech blogs for portal technology and killing their inventors. It won't happen on my watch. Sometimes I visit haunted houses with an unloaded gun. It's so dark no one sees it but me. Click. One demon down. Strafing through hallways.

I punch medical skeletons and cadavers while reciting doom lore. Rip and tear. Big guts.

Did you mean to say that it's too "blasé"?

Base as in, base humor, base intellect, you know, at the bottom. It's rather boring music honestly. Standard grindcore and psychedelic grind like Agoraphobic Nosebleed is cool, though.

Long story short: Far too much..

Short story long: Like many others in this thread, find myself constantly trying to visualize real-world settings in the Doom engine. Over the last 16 years I have spent FAR too many hours browsing the web for Doom related stuff, be it WADs, MIDIs, pictures, Alpha stuff like on toastytech.com, info about Doom's development, etc etc.. I know I'm not the only one here who's well and truly addicted beyond reason - Not just to the game, but to all the info/culture/etc that revolves around it.

Every gaming friend I have knows I'm ridiculous about this game. Memfis mentioned earlier thinking about it so much to the point of detriment - I completely understand that and it happens to me too. In school I was drawing Doom maps, now at work (when I have a particularly slow day, unfortunately rare) I still find myself sketching fast map ideas.. Pritch more or less said it's always going to be perceived by hardcore fans as the best due to all factors being as they were - all the planets aligning - to make it the most appealing game. I definitely feel that. Back the the early 00's I was waiting for a game to come out that blew me away on that level (If Doom was so great, the future is looking good!) but it honestly never really happened, not for FPS games, anyway.

I don't know what it is about Doom, but no one ever truly escapes it's gravitational pull.. They always come back at one time or another.

I look at all sorts of real-life stuff and think "that'd look good in Doom". Inversely I also think "if this was Doom, this would look bad" - texture misalignments in bricks and wallpaper, mainly.

Doom is awesome, ask any 40-70 year old men (unfortunately, I'm MUCH more younger than that...).
Doom is awesome for its...replayability. so...I am psyched about that one fact.
No other FPS was so much fun to play through again and again (technically, once the campaign is finished, I feel weird to go through the same shit all over again, even at a higher difficulty. Doom, did the opposite).
Doom has affected me ALOT.
Originally, I was a Halo fan (I still am, but only with the novels, f*** graphical improvements, they happen everyday), then found Quake 1 and finished it on normal on the first try at it. Then Doom 2, and finished it on ITYTD and trying again at HMP. Quake, never bothered to play it on a higher difficulty ("seriously" play it, that is).

Doom psyched me so much, that I looked at everything I could find, Freedoom, HacX,Brutal doom, etc.including Doom world.

That's really funny you say that. I recently moved and the other day I was introducing myself to my next door neighboor, who's about 60 or 70. We're talking, getting along just fine, and he asks, "Do you like computer games?" I replied, "Well, yeah, but mostly from the 90s," and then my heart skipped a beat. "Oh shit, he's going to say it, isn't he?" I thought. And sure enough: "My favorite computer game is Doom!" I was like, ahhhhh yeah. He doesn't know about user-made mods. We're going to have some fun.

The other way around for me. Not seldom do I imagine how it would be if I actually was inside a map hahaha, omg so geeky. It mainly applies to cool maps like Dreamscape and such. But I mean cmon, how cool wouldn't it be to walk around in those epic scale weird ass fuck scary places? Preferably without monsters though
