My Top 10 First Person Shooters

Recommended Posts

If I have to say what is my most favourite genre in gaming, it would have to be the first-person shooter, or FPS for short. They're fun, addictive, and have such high replay value, at least the majority of the oldschool ones of the 90s. This is why I'll be listing my top 10 personal favourite shooters. Lock and load, cause we're diving right in!

#10 - Quake 2 (1997)
I consider this to be probably id Software's last great first-person shooter. Although not a direct sequel to Quake, it is still similar in terms of the enhanced game engine mechanics. As the marine Bitterman, you fight your way across the planet Stroggos to stop the operations of a warmongering alien race called the Strogg who have been invading the Earth. Unlike the previous first-person shooters by id, which were essentially heading from the start to the end of each level, the levels are hub-based set in a series of units, where you must accomplish major mission objectives before you can proceed to the next unit. Although the theme of the game feels samey with the majority of levels consisting of military bases and industrial facilities, the scenarios are pretty entertaining and a lot of the cyborg monstrosities are neat and intimidating. There's quite a number of Easter Eggs too, from the appearance of the Dopefish in the Cooling Facility area (after completing the unit) to the id gallery showing the people involved in Quake 2 (accessed after defeating the final boss). Quake 2 delivers what it promises, a fun and fast paced shooter.

#9 - Wolfenstein 3D (1992)
The granddaddy of all first-person shooters, but not the very first. Id Software made their start with Hovertank and Catacomb 3D, which laid the groundwork for Wolfenstein, where you're the mighty B. J. Blazkowicz. The first three episodes chronicles his escape from Castle Wolfenstein, to ending the dreaded Operation: Eisenfaust masterminded by Dr. Schabbs, and finally penetrating the bunker and assassinating Adolf Hitler himself. The last three episodes, known as The Nocturnal Missions, are a prequel trilogy, where B. J. seeks to stop the German chemical war machine led by General Fettgesicht. There's also the standalone prequel Spear of Destiny, where B. J. must obtain and secure the titular spear from the Nazis. Wolfenstein 3D may seem primitive by today's standards, but back in 1992, the year it was developed and released, it was revolutionary and a testament to id Software's continuation and determination of breaking grounds and pushing the limits, and it was their official transition from the kid friendly Commander Keen series to the more hardcore, violent shooters they are known for to this day.

#8 - Hexen (1995)
Hexen is one of the Doom clones released by Raven Software and published by id Software. The sequel to the immortal Heretic, Hexen chronicles the Serpent Riders saga in the realm of Cronos, where the second of the malevolent trio, Korax, has taken over with the legions of monsters running amok and causing death and destruction. It is up to the three brave heroes, Baratus the Fighter, Parias the Cleric, and Daedolon the Mage, to save Cronos and put an end to Korax. Much like the mentioned Quake 2, Hexen has a set of hubs. Getting through them is easier said than done, however, as many of the levels are rife with puzzles, many of which consist switches which opens a remote part of a level or in another, and most of these puzzles are so cryptic and confusing, that it will take awhile for many players to get through these levels. Nevertheless, Hexen is quite innovative for its time and it warranted an expansion pack called Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, and it even spawned a sequel set in another realm where four heroes must save it from the rule of the third and last of the Serpent Riders.

#7 - Strife (1996)
The last official game to use the Doom engine and released a few weeks before the mighty Quake. Strife is a very unique experience, set in a world that is like a fusion of medieval and futuristic. The premise of the game is that you're an unnamed mercenary that is compelled to save the world from a deadly cult known as The Order, which was formed by a group of mutants following the arrival of a comet that struck the Earth. While many shooters at the time revolved around killing anything that moves, you can't do that in Strife. You have NPCs who you can interact with and can aid you in your missions, and there are times where you'll be given decisions, and the choices you make will affect what ending you'll get, and there are multiple endings to the game. So in a way, Strife is more like a first-person shooter with RPG elements mixed in. Thankfully, you are not on your own, as you are assisted by Blackbird, who would communicate with you from time to time, and her tips usually do help you to progress through the game as they give out clues to what you're supposed to do. It's a game worth checking out if you're into Doom.

#6 - Shadow Warrior (1997)
This game is one of the four major titles that use Ken Silverman's Build engine, which is also used by Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Redneck Rampage. I love Japanese culture and first-person shooters. Combine the two together, and you get Shadow Warrior. A solid and fun shooter in which you play as Lo Wang and you must stop the evil Master Zilla from systematically taking over Japan. While it's similar to Duke Nukem 3D, it's got its own innovations like the ability to use remote-control toys, turrets, and tanks. You also get a nifty arsenal, starting with the katana, fists of fury, and some shurikens. As you progress, you also get uzis, the riot shotgun, the missile launcher, sticky bombs, railgun, and even parts of gibbed enemies, like the guardian head which shoots out fireballs, and ripper heart, which allows you to make a clone of yourself. The levels are nicely designed with well thought out architecture that does its best to capture the Oriental theme of the game. Shadow Warrior is a great game and if you're a fan of FPSs and Japanese culture, it's worth a try.

#5 - Heretic (1994)
Raven Software takes the fast and furious action of Doom and use it to make a fantasy-based first person shooter. Heretic is the first of the series that chronicles the Serpent Riders, a malevolent trio of demons who seek death, destruction, and domination of the realms they invade. In this game, you take control of Corvus, and your race was wiped out by D'Sparil's minions. Vowing revenge, you battle the monsters across the realm of Parthoris and venture across dimensions to destroy their master, D'Sparil. Heretic sets the standards for first-person shooters in a fantasy theme, featuring a plethora of levels that showcase medieval castles and villages. Apart from your arsenal of magical weapons like the ethereal crossbow and gauntlets of the necromancer, you also have power-ups which you can store a certain amount on your inventory, including Morph Ovums, Shadowspheres, and the sought after Tomes of Power. Heretic is among the first of what many call the "Doom clones."

#4 - Quake (1996)
Possibly one of best first-person shooters of all time. Quake is considered by many to be the first shooter to be in actual 3D and for a lot of reasons. All the character models are in true 3D instead of 2D sprites, and there are many features like rooms over rooms in the same area, underwater sections, and much more. Quake has a very interesting premise as in each episode you start in a military base and battle through possessed humans and dogs before entering the dark dimensions in which many of the toughest and vicious monsters lurk, including ogres that carry chainsaws and lob grenades, fiends which can easily kill you with their claws, and large hulking shamblers that will crush or electrocute you. Each place is unique and does its best to show just how creepy and scary the realm of Quake is. To sum things up, Quake is indeed a very challenging game, and you always have to be on your toes as the enemies are very clever and can waste you in no time if you're not careful. It is also a game that is highly recommended for any first person shooter fan as to experience Quake is like a rite of passage. I would also recommend one or two of the expansion packs, Scourge of Armagon (most definitely) and Dissolution of Eternity (pretty decent, from what I saw in some playthroughs). Both give you more of the Quake experience.

#3 - Blood (1997)
3D Realms and Q Studios were originally going to develop this game, but near its completion, it was handed over to Monolith Productions. Just like Shadow Warrior, Blood uses the Build engine, and it follows a theme. While Shadow Warrior makes use of the Eastern genre, Blood does so with horror. As the title suggests, this game is filled with gore and blood, lots and lots of blood. In fact, as you blow enemies up, gibs will splatter all over, and when you light them on fire, they scream in agony as they run around covered in flames. As for the story, you are Caleb, and you get banished by the malignant Tchernobog for unknown reasons. Miraculously, you wake up, and vow to have vengeance on The Cabal, the cult which follow Tchernobog. Blood features large and challenging levels, full to the brim of deadly enemies, from axe-wielding zombies, to gun-toting cultists, and many other nightmarish monsters. You even got a versatile arsenal to use against your foes, including the flare gun, sawed-off shotgun, tommy gun, napalm launcher, dynamite, aerosol can, tesla cannon, and even a voodoo doll. All of these weapons even have an alternate fire, so they're very indispensable. Blood overall is a very fantastic, fun, humorous, yet creepy game that is sadly overlooked and deserves to be given the attention it deserves.

#2 - Doom (1993)/Duke Nukem 3D (1996)
I feel I couldn't pick one over the other, so I'll talk a fair amount of both of games. Wolfenstein 3D may have got the ball rolling for the FPS genre, but it was Doom that made it rise to the throne. Doom is widely hailed as one of the greatest games in PC gaming history, and that is an understatement. There's a Doomworld community (which I am proud to be part of), countless mods and total conversions are being made up to this era, and there's a myriad of source ports to play it on, with Boom, ZDoom and GZDoom being the most popular picks. Doom is timeless, and no one can deny that. It has high-tech facilities, creepy hellish locations, and so much more filled with scary demons from Hell, and there's a lot of blood and gore. It also has intense arrangements of well-known heavy metal hits, courtesy of the legendary Bobby Prince, which suits the fast-paced action. Now for Duke Nukem 3D. Hail to the King, baby! Duke Nukem 3D has you playing as the super-macho womanising action hero Duke Nukem, who takes no shit from alien scum. It features many realistic locations like movie theatres, prisons, military bases, space stations, restaurants, hotels, police stations, post offices, and even an abandoned ship. This is also one of the first shooters to show adult pornography, like the appearance of strippers and naked women trapped in slime cocoons. Duke is also full of cheesy and hilarious one-liners, some of which allude to famous live-action movies. The levels themselves also have plenty of pop-culture references that match the environments, and they're filled with a lot of aliens to slaughter like assault troopers, pig cops, octabrains, and much more. Truly one of 3D Realms' greatest titles. With that said and done, both Doom and Duke Nukem 3D seem evenly matched, and while Duke may have an edge when it comes to realism, there's still a whole lot going with Doom.

#1 - Rise of the Triad (1995)
If I have to say which shooter is my most favourite, it would have to be Rise of the Triad. It may not seem as impressive as Doom due to running on a modified Wolfenstein engine, but it has a charm that could never be matched, and there's a very interesting story behind its development. After a number of arguments over the direction of Doom, Tom Hall, one of the four founders of id Software, left the company to join Apogee (my all-time favourite game developer/publisher) and create Rise of the Triad. It was originally intended to be a sequel to Wolfenstein, but id Software cancelled the project as they did not want to draw attention away from Doom. Apogee continued to work on the project, but instead of making it a Wolfenstein title, they made something completely different, and it's so awesome. Even so, traces of its origins remains, like a lot of the enemies resemble German officers, and also the appearance of the MP40. Rise of the Triad is also quite challenging, not just from the enemies, but also the hazards, and some of them can be so cheap so you have to take caution as you make your way through the levels. The levels are also large, adventurous, filled with action and so much exploration. The icing on the cake is the music. It really pumps you up and it's got so many catchy tunes that surpass Doom in awesomeness. And of course, Rise of the Triad is very unique as it also features jump pads, gravitational anomaly discs, and ankh coins which not only give you points, but extra lives if you collect 100 of them. There are also a plethora of Easter eggs, like what the characters would have on the loading screen if played on a certain holiday, one of the five characters you can play as is called I. P. Freely, and one of the levels which can only be accessed through a cheat has a bug which was made into a joke. God Mode is also a powerup, in which you turn into a god and disintegrate enemies with energy blasts, and you also have Dog mode, which turns you into an invincible dog and you can kill groups of enemies by howling. This is something unheard of at the time, and it makes an already great game into an epic one. So there you have it, Rise of the Triad is my most favourite FPS game of all. High replay value, high fun factor, difficult yet solid gameplay, very entertaining, the shareware episode features completely original levels, and there's an expansion pack that has long been freeware which features the hardest levels ever made! Such an awesome game, that there's even the 2013 remake, which I'm looking forward to try when I can since I really love this game. Job well done, Developers of Incredible Power, and job well done, Apogee!

So that's my list. This is of course my opinion. Hope you enjoy reading this, and please don't hesitate to say what's your favourite first-person shooters.

NOTE: I've updated the list since my taste has changed a little bit.

More of a blogs post I think, but whatever....

I never cared much for Quake II, despite my multiple copies of it and the action figures I collect. When it came time for that game, I was more invested with Dark Forces II. Quake II may have been technologically superior, but boring level and sound design took its toll. Combat also seemed to be weak at times, and some times just flat out infuriating, with occasional dots of boredom. Compared to Doom and Quake, shooting felt clunky. However, I still had fun with the game and beat the PSX version.

DFII had the novelty of cheesy, yet still fairly good quality, cutscenes presenting a solid story, wrapped around expansive, open levels chiock full of puzzles and villains that just seemed more complete. Gunplay also seemed to much better. It lacked in some visual departments though, most of which were fixed for the Mysteries of the Sith expansion pack. I guess both would be a top tenf or me, though.

Never cared much for Rise of the Triad at all. If I had to make a list, it'd probably be like:

1. Doom - I play it the most, modded it
2. Dark Forces II - Played it the most before Doom
3. Quake - Nostalgia for High School computers
4. Dark Forces - Beat it on a friggin' PSP
5. Chasm: The Rift - I'm the only one who would rank this so high
6. Quake II - I do like it, enough to rank it higher than you but I still have issues.
7. Team Fortress 2 - Played this waaaaaaaaay too much
8. Battlefront - The first one. Fuck heroes and space battles.
9. Counter Strike: Global Offensive - Less retarded than the others but still retarded.
10. Medal of Honor: Rising Sun - No, seriously. This game was the shit.

Great list! I think I can't make one, because I like different shooters for different reasons, so I can't make a order of preference. But Doom, Heretic, Wolf3D, Blake Stone, Duke3D, Quake 1 and even Tekwar are potential candidates.

In before this thread goes to the blog section, here's my personal list:

#10 - Call of Duty : Advanced Warfare (2014)
Unlike other modern military shooters, it doesn't heavily rely on QTE, honestly. Take a look at the infiltrate mission called "Sentinel" and you'll see what I mean. I know many of people don't like the modern military shooters that don't have much degree of freedom during the gameplay and there are many unrealistic moments in this "realistic" game, but at least this one is not a spunkgargleweewee. Plus, handling some futuristic weapons, such as a rifle with 3D printer, was somewhat cool to me. But the best thing from that game was that they finally decided to destroy the Gangnam District in game... yes, YES!

#9 - Rise of the Triad (2013)
Interceptor Entertainment certainly tried to retrospect the first person shooters from mid-90s, and they did a right job most of the time. Seriously, I never thought to see the Dog mode in modern times. Not to mention that Andrew Hulshult did a fabulous work to remake the awesome soundtracks from the original RoTT by Lee Jackson, and it's still one of the best soundtracks for game to me. Unfortunately, its horrendous optimization and infamous bugs & glitches blurred every positive things they put in that game......and seriously, a dog mode without cute little paws?!

#8 - Doom 3 (2004)
The new version of Doom gave me a completely different experiences compare to the classic one. Its environment was way too dark, and the combats were way too predictable; "Oh, you're going to release demons from monster closet right after I got that item. Tell me if I'm wrong." Still it has some nostalgic elements that worked pretty good to me. No offense, but I loved the plasma gun from Doom 3. Certainly it has a childish sound effect, but it's still beautiful to watch those cerulean plasma projectiles.

#7 - Wolfenstein (2009)
I did enjoy finding secrets to earn some gold and spellbooks from Heretic so I could upgrade my MP43 into the portable doomsday machinegun. Plus, killing nazis in various ways was really damn good. I blew their head with Kar98, and I burned them down with flame-thrower, electrocuted them with tesla gun, vaporized them with particle cannon, and just simply destroyed them with empowered, fully-upgraded Leichenfaust 44. Yes, It was all about killing nazis.

#6 - Bioshock Infinite (2013)
It's one of a few games that actually made me sad, okay i'll be honest: cry, at the final chapter, especially when the protagonist realized the truth. Although I didn't like the weapon system which allowed me to hold only two guns, this game has a fascinating environment(especially the introduction level), immersive story, and one of the best heroine characters I've seen from the game.

#5 - Shadow Warrior (2013)
Playing first person shooter, or playing first person slasher, It's your call. Seriously, wielding an enchanted katana was way more interesting then I expected. Not to mention that blowing sh*t up with explosive arrows, quad-barrel shotgun was just wangtastic. Gonna need to check out the sequel which is currently under development.

#4 - Counter-Strike : Source (2004)
I played CS 1.5 and 1.6, and the recent one, but I spent much more time on the source version. I don't know why exactly, but I even ran my own dedicate server which featured my own maps created with Hammer Editor. And yes, it's been more than 13 years, but I still hate AWP campers.

#3 - Wolfenstein : The New Order (2014)
The supreme example of mixing old-school FPS and modern FPS. Once again, It's about killing nazis, but with better combat system, better enemies, better storyline... well, let's just say better everything.

#2 - Team Fortress 2 (2007)
4uck the Mann-Conomy update. Other than that, It's the best class-based first person shooter I've ever played. And my favorite classes are Soldier and Medic.

Honorable Mention:
Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic, Hexen, Quake 3 Arena + Quake Live, Half-Life, Half-Life : Opposing Force, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare, Bioshock (2007), Portal + Portal 2, Counter-Strike 1.5, Strife: Veteran Edition

#1 - Classic Doom (1993)
There was a time that people used to use the word "Doom clone" rather than "First person shooter".

EDIT: typo

For me:
10. Half Life: Opposing Force - I don't know why I liked this game so much, but it's definitely my favorite Half Life game.

9. Rising Storm/Red Orchestra - A tactical world war II shooter is just so damn perfect, especially when it's slow paced and plays well. It's too bad the game doesn't fucking run on my computer anymore.

8. FEAR 2 - A fun and spooky game with a bullet time ability. Oh and I also got raped and impregnated a ghostly chick.

7. Doom 3 - I enjoyed this game quite a bit. Nough' said.

6. Call of Duty 2 - My first CoD game and my favorite WW2 shooter. It was just so awesome playing a the cinematic levels as an allied soldier.

5. Doom - It's Doom. I think this might have been the first game to genuinely scare me, but I don't remember.

4. Quake - It's Quake...

3. Left 4 Dead 2 - Probably the most linear and repetitive game that I've enjoyed the most. Even since day one.

2. Blood - I love the style and feel this game had, it was just so perfect. I wish there more games like this as well as a remake, cause I'm sick of playing Blood in Dosbox.

1. Unreal Tournament 99/2004 - UT99 was my first FPS game I played, hell I was watched the game being played years before I could play it, and still I love the game to death, after playing UT 2004 I loved it even more. No other game has made a lasting impact on me like this one has... Okay maybe except Deus Ex.

Quake was, however, outstanding when it was first released. I was shocked that it was even possible to play something like that in DOS.

It's not as much fun to play nowadays, though.

I split my lists to singleplayer and multiplayer. They're in about the order of playthroughs or total play time. And singleplayer ones all have at least one complete playthrough. And all these games are currently/always installed on my computers.

== SP ==
Serious Sam: The First Encounter (I still haven't finished the second, but if I play the first twice in a row, it's the second, right?)
Doom (all the classic ones + 64)
Heretic
Unreal
Quake II
Deus Ex
Half-Life (both + expansions to the first)
Delta Force II
Soldier of Fortune
Doom III

== MP ==
Aliens vs Predator II
Quake III (& Live before it sucked)
Unreal Tournament (only played this against bots, but competitively with friends, who wins the bots faster)
Quake

I think I might have liked Quake II multiplayer too, but I've only played it so few times in MP that I can't place it into the MP list. Quake didn't quite fit into the SP list, although I've played it through many times alone.. Doom and Heretic do the medieval, hell/etc thing better.

Ok, I'll do a list for realsies. I dunno if I even enjoy 10 different FPS games though.. but I'll attempt:

#1 - Doom 2 & Ultimate Doom
#2 - Duke Nukem 3D
#3 - Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
#4 - Wolfenstein 3D
#5 - Goldeneye

#6 & below - Everything Else

I tend to get tired of 80% of FPS games after about 10 minutes - I dunno if it's the poor color choices or sloppy, slow controls of most FPSes but something just doesn't click for me most of the time. Hell, Goldeneye hardly makes the cut, but I think that game would be perfect suited to some Risen3D-esque port to play it in souping up the textures and models.

For multiplayer, there's just one... DOOM2 and the millions of awesome Deathmatch wads out there! Nothing else comes close, not to me anyway.

I put Doom on 5 cause the higher four games I liked more, or in Quake, blood, and UT's case, had a higher impact for me.

This is a really bad list for more than five reasons.

To be honest I can only come up with seven meaningful FPS to me:

1. DOOM 1/2 or just Classic DOOM
2. Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny or just Wolf3D
3. Quake 1
4. Blood 1
5. Hexen 1
6. Unreal 1
7. Half-Life 1

Three honorable mentions go to DOOM 64, Turok 1 and F.E.A.R. 1 to round it off.

Admittedly ROTT '95 is pretty fun and unique but I think its combat is garbage. The enemy and weapon balance is way off and it's not much better in the remake.
