I wouldn't bother with a gaming laptop under $1k, see no reason to spend more than $2k.

At any rate, GTX 965M might be a bit borderline for good settings in Doom given the requirements. I would go for this:

never had a MSI branded laptop, any good?

Had always only experienced Lenovo laptops at work. Not interested in blowing tons on Alienware branded products either.

I have a 15.6" MSI laptop with similar specifications and it's been great to me; no reservations recommending the brand.

BTW, the reason I recommend the GTX 970M if you can afford it is that these model numbers are not comparable to the desktop versions.

GTX 970M is probably around the desktop GTX 960 whereas the 960M is far below the 960 in terms of performance. The 965M has a similar number of "graphics cores" as the desktop GTX 960, but it is a bit slower by virtue of the fact that it can't run those cores as fast (power consumption reasons) & it has access to a bit less memory bandwidth (112GB/sec v.s. just 80GB/sec).

Any of these newer models they're suggesting should work fine, even at 1080p 144hz with some graphical adjustments.

I'm on a GTX 660m i73630qm Asus G75vw and I'm sure I can get it running, even if it's at 30fps x_x, which I will drag myself through the campaign to play this.

Anyway, when you're shopping for a new laptop try to find one with Thunderbolt 3. eGPU's are growing in popularity and user-friendliness, after you buy your laptop you'll be able to get an external, full size, gpu to attach to it through thunderbolt or your laptops internal pci-e slot, if need be.


If you end up running into performance issues, I usually go for texture quality, medium/low shadows, with all post processing and effects off. Then go into additional "tweaking" in the games .ini configuration files, which you can search for when the time comes.


When you get your laptop there are a series of adjustments you should make setting it up.


Make sure it's in high performance mode, not balanced or energy saver most importantly. Then search up Windows 10 performance guides.

There's a lot... The best thing to do is wait for the game to release and in the following weeks there will be numerous performance guides, instead of me making a huge wall of text.

This. I used to play on a laptop for all of my formative years and got a desktop in my early 20s. Pretty sure I'm sterile.

I would say for a cheaper gaming laptop a I7 8gb ram and something with an 840m would work as its what i got and i can run games using similar specs on high settings at 1600X900 at a playable rate of 30 plus FPS

Why do you need a laptop so badly?

You can get intel nucs or gigabyte brix soon which will have a thunderbolt 3 port (external graphics card) if space is an issue.

If you really want a laptop though try get one with a thunderbolt 3 port as I stated above you'll be able to hook up desktop graphics cards (in the near future) to your laptop when your at home and still have the portability. It will cost you an arm and a leg though but you'll be future proofed and be able to play doom at whatever settings your desktop graphics card can play it at.

eGPUs have been "on the horizon" for a long time...and I think they will continue to be, sadly.

It's nice to hear that someone else prefers a laptop over the traditonal desktop setup. The mobility and compact nature is just fantastic.
