hardcore_gamer Posted April 28, 2016 I am talking about the different variants of this one: I have never liked it that much because it just looks so bland and generic compared to the other more complex and better drawn wall textures. I almost never use them in my maps. 0 Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted April 28, 2016 If uses this ineptly it does indeed look bland. So do the textures in other games, too. If used well, I cannot get enough of those E1 textures, though. 0 Share this post Link to post
VGamingJunkie Posted April 28, 2016 I think the Crackle one, specifically, was meant as more of a detailing texture than something you slap onto a large surface. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted April 28, 2016 I like the crackle texture because it looks like archviles. 0 Share this post Link to post
Tarnsman Posted April 28, 2016 I'm glad that being banned from EE hasn't stopped you from posting useless question threads. 0 Share this post Link to post

kuchitsu Posted April 28, 2016 I agree it's kinda weird and feels different from most iwad textures. I probably have never used it and I'm struggling to think of a level where I liked how it was used. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gothic Box Posted April 28, 2016 I only like the grey/green STARTANs, especially if the map author can blend the grey and green together in a transition. 0 Share this post Link to post
wheresthebeef Posted April 28, 2016 The defaults in any game become dull and annoying to see. For Hammer, I hate seeing a specific brick texture in HL2 For Left 4 Dead, I hate the billboard ad for pills For Doom, its this startan texture For Quake 3, I absolutely hate Sarge because he is the default both for new players and if there is a custom model you don't have downloaded. 0 Share this post Link to post

But the thing about the startan textures is that they actually stand out compared to the rest of the textures. While the other textures go for a semi-realistic look/design, the startan textures almost look like a cartoon. It's bit hard to describe, I just don't like them. 40oz said:Its not the textures, its your mapping. Using this argument you can defend any texture. 0 Share this post Link to post
VGamingJunkie Posted April 28, 2016 How well one of Doom's Vanilla textures looks in the environment depends on how well it's used. 0 Share this post Link to post

joe-ilya Posted April 28, 2016 The way it's used in your screenshot, I'd say come back later. 0 Share this post Link to post

baja blast rd. Posted April 28, 2016 Why are people assuming that the screenshot displayed is an actual room OP is using in a level and trotting out this irrelevant "Well if you use it like that, of course it'll look bad" argument? No shit it looks horrible there, but obviously the sole point of the shot is just to convey what texture he's talking about. And on that point, you didn't do that clearly, OP, because there was ambiguity in whether you were referring to Startan or Crackle. 0 Share this post Link to post
hex11 Posted April 28, 2016 Are those the default textures in DoomBuilder? (I never used that editor) Anyway can't you just change the defaults? Even DCK has various texture themes, and you can create your own. Even DEU lets you edit the deu.ini file and set your own defaults. 0 Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted April 28, 2016 I like the startan textures, they remind me of bubble wrap. 0 Share this post Link to post

MrGlide Posted April 29, 2016 I Like the tech Base textures. They do have to be used correctly though. There are very few textures I Dislike though, It just matters how you uase them. 0 Share this post Link to post

Wovenloaf Posted April 29, 2016 I'm not particularly a fan of them myself, but I can't think of anything visual about Doom that I hate. I do however much prefer the fantastical, pleasingly-colored Hell textures. I tend to opt for either those or City textures, interestingly enough. 0 Share this post Link to post

Spectre01 Posted April 29, 2016 I hate redrock when it's abused in Hell maps. Red Hell = way worse than startan techbase. 0 Share this post Link to post
joe-ilya Posted April 29, 2016 So that means you hate the redrock maps from scythe? 0 Share this post Link to post

Like I said "textures can be pretty if used in appropriate spots." 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted April 29, 2016 I dislike the Doom 2 TEKGREN textures. They're always used in generic techbases. Making a megawad with only default textures is something I want to achieve. 0 Share this post Link to post
VGamingJunkie Posted April 29, 2016 If someone had a version of SOMEMONG that was colored normally, it could make for a good horror effect. Put it into a lovely looking painting with normal coloring then have the SOMEMONG version pop in front of a hell landscape. So it's like the house is being corrupted. 0 Share this post Link to post
