Best official Doom levels?

Recommended Posts

What are your favorites from Doom I, II, Master Levels, Final Doom, and No Rest for the Living?

Also, below are the original Doom levels featured in Doom 2016. By looking at them, do you think the devs chose them because they are great levels or because they work well with the new guns and character movement (jumping)?

Entryway Doom 2 Map01
Hangar E1M1
Nuclear Plant E1M2
Toxin Refinery E1M3
Halls of the Damned E2M6
Slough of Despair E3M2
Underhalls Doom 2 Map02
Phobos Lab E1M5
Tower of Babel E2M8
Phobos Anomaly E1M8
House of Pain E3M4
Command Control E1M4
Pandemonium E3M3

I found it amusing that my favorite levels on Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 were all Romero and McGee's works (e.g. most of E1, E4M2, E4M6, MAP11, MAP14, MAP22, MAP29...). And I love most of Plutonia with a few exceptions, though the Casali brothers' works on TNT didn't do much to me.

That's probably the most boring favorite list you can get, sorry.

I'm pretty sure that it wasn't for the latter reason.

Why is that amusing? It clearly shows who had good mapping skills and who did not when the game was created.

I was amused by how consistent my preferences were, as I didn't know who made what when I formed my opinion. Good is subjective but well, yeah, to me they were way ahead of the other level designers.

I enjoy all of them though I find E2M6 to be my favourite. Great mix of action and horror.

Evilution has a kickass chain of Map18-Map21. Four big impressive levels, all with very strong mood and memorable design decisions. Definitely one of the greatest parts of all iwads in my eyes.

I like all the boss levels from 1 and 2 (yes, even Dis), but some other non-boss favourites are Mt. Erebus, Slough of Despair, Hell Keep (I always found it cute!), All the E1 levels are straight classics, and the final hell levels of Doom 2 were so cool to me.

Evolution; all of them. 04, 08 (metal, with its Heretic tribute), 13, 19, 26, 27, 29, 31, and 32 in particular.
Richard Heath's maps from NRftL, especially Vivisection.
Plutonia has a few, but I always forget what number they are; 32 is a classic.
Doom 2's later maps.
E3>E4=E2>E1

I think this is the first time I've seen a positive mention of Metal. It's like Habitat tier in terms of aesthetics and gameplay. Either way, the following map 09 is strictly superior for killing large numbers of hitscanners!

Ultimate Doom: E2M1, E2M6 (moreso it's PSX variant though), E3M6, E4M8
Doom II: MAP02, MAP14, MAP27

Plutonia: MAP01, MAP03, MAP18.

Doom 1 E1 E4
Doom 2 Dead Simple, Tricks and Traps, The Pit, Refueling Base, Circle of Death, Downtown, Industrial Zone, Suburbs, Gotcha!, The Abandoned Mines, The Living End
Master Levels Attack, Canyon, Catwalk, Titan Manor, Trapped On Titan, Black Tower, The Express Elevator To Hell
The Plutonia Experiment (all of it except maybe a few maps)
TNT System Control, Stronghold, Redemption, Storage Facility, Processing Area, Mill, Shipping/Respawning, Central Processing, Administration Center, Mount Pain, Heck, River Styx, Last Call, Pharaoh, Caribbean

But if I really had to narrow it down it would probably come down to The Pit, Downtown, Industrial Zone, Trapped on Titan, Congo, Well of Souls, The Sewers, Mill, Administration Center, Last Call, Pharaoh and Caribbean. I especially think a level like "Pharaoh" inspired me for the beautiful atmosphere and wide open space for exploration. It's the kind of place I'd like to imagine myself running around and getting lost in.
