What do you want to see in the next Doom?

disturbing vibe that Doom 64 and PSX Doom had.

like this one?

XD

@ topic: I want it to be scarier, something like doom 3 but not that much "tryhard" - the new dooms hell didn't really feel like hell... there are some cool areas but I never really felt like "oh shit man I'm in hell" like in doom 3

I Agree, It would have been better if it only introduced some kind of "ultimate evil and agony" just to make it feel more like an actual "Hell" .

Hell is also a dead wasteland in the new game. I'm quite sure that a return to an intact, full-powered hell in a future game would probably yield scarier results.

It'd be nice to see what id's artists and engineers can pull off with dense foliage and water in the new engine. There were those little planter pods in the Argent Facility, but I don't recall there ever being any non-opaque liquids.

Fight the titans.

That would be cool actually. What about a return of the Icon of Sin, blowing it up like you usually do, only to reveal that there's a ginormous Titan behind the wall and it's so huge it makes the Cyberdemon look like an Imp.

You have to scale the boss and climb it to kill it (by shooting at it's weak points.)

=)

À la Legend of Zelda and Metal Gear Solid? I like it.

That'd be pretty cool actually. That and maybe... keyword maybe some swords and some hack and slash gameplay a la Diablo? :3

Ideally, what I want from a new Doom game is a game with personality that focuses less on catering to nostalgic manbabies and more on breaking new ground.

But more realistically, at least something different than the usual "UAC screws up, Hell invades, Doomguy kills everything" scenario. That shit is just so trite...

Bigger maps, more emphasis on exploration, removal of scrub weapons like the Vortex Rifle and Lightning Gun from MP. Honestly I'll just be happy with MORE - the game was too short.

Destructible environments.

I would like this as well. Maybe secrets behind walls you don’t think to blow up unless you see some environmental hint, or cover that gets chipped away and keeps you on the move. Doesn’t need to be Red Faction or Bad Company levels of destruction, just something to vary the gameplay a bit during each encounter.

Vehicles.

I’d rather see RAGE 2 honestly. Highly underrated game with some of the best car combat I’ve played in a while (from a company that never made a game with vehicles, no less.) My ideal RAGE 2 would be somewhat of an open world where the various factions fight over the newly woken soldiers combined with a GTA2 reputation system. But that’s a topic for another time.

Not to get too anal, but that wasn't a surf rock track, it was a rock arrangement based on the opening riff to Megadeth's "Hanger 18."

I always thought the intro to “Running From Evil” sounded like the beginning of NIN’s “Head Like A Hole.”

I'm pretty sure no one is asking for DOOM to go all-out Portal. Hell, the portals that do exist in the new game are the ugliest and most simplistic teleporters that graced a game in years :-D .

Considering what Prey did with an earlier iteration of idTech regarding portals makes your statement doubly so. Visually those were pretty cool and fun.

Shadow Warrior 2013 says hello.

Shit, I was gonna one up you guys with 99’s “Requiem: Avenging Angel” but on research that was only a triple barrel. Wish I could get a copy of that game, I remember enjoying the demo.

I like the vortex rifle, I Use it a lot, i usually hit players with Vortex rifle then quickly switch to ssg, faster kills that way .

I'm going to interpret "the next Doom" as the next fully new Doom game (excluding DLC or expansion packs for Doom'16)

TheWizard said:

Fully agree, it makes sense to do it on Earth. And yeah it has to be a much more futuristic and most of all an overpopulated, overcrowded, disturbing vision of the future (before Hell attacks). A few more movies to think about: Both the new and old Judge Dredds, newest Total Recall, Fifth Element, slums of Gotham City (in recent games, and movies).

It's got to have that mix of slums and old buildings where all the poor people live, and massive super buildings towering over them leaving them under a practically 24/7 shadow.

The campaign could essentially be the Doom guy slowly working his way down the layers of the mega city, it will transition from a futuristic look (taken over by hell of course) to a complete fucking ghetto that just gets extremely depressing (but FUEL for the Doom guy's rage!). The bottom layers of the city would be where 90 percent of the city's population is, and where the Hell on Earth truly is. Doom guy will see the real suffering and torture of all the innocent people who were not protected by the rich when Hell attacks.

Anyways, the key here is to have a very messy environment so the map creators don't really need to worry about "oh does this make sense for this random support beam to be in the middle of the road?". It just has to be believable, and Earth needs to have a dark history.

The Doom guy will finally see why they were so desperate for this Argent energy. A truly sad ending to Earth.

This, totally this.

I would also like to see a star port as well, since I don't think I've seen this done properly yet (no, the hangar in Doom 3 doesn't do it right). It needs to have some huge space ships docked and feel like a futuristic airport.
Doom'16 had a nice monorail station that felt a lot more like a futuristic train station, so I think Id could do a decent star port.

Oh yes, and vegetation. Doom'16 had a bit of this encased in glass and potted plants, but we need to see natural environments that aren't wastelands in an Id game. Let's see some actual grass and leafed trees.

More variety to the Hell locations - As cool as Doom'16 Hell was, I would have liked to see parts that aren't just rock and stone masonry. I was rather disappointed in Titan's Realm for this reason, because it's supposed to take place inside a body of a giant, dead demon.
Instead of giant walls of rotten flesh, bone and entrails, there were lots of stone walls - didn't feel much like the insides of a gigantic creature.
I'd like to see some kind of reinterpretation of the Slough of Despair, where it feels like an evil swampland or some such.

As for gameplay, I'd like to see a different reinterpretation of the classic guns again. I love the ones we got in Doom'16, but I like to get the feeling that the whole world isn't using the exact same shotgun weapon brand they use on Mars. Balance them differently again to shake things up.

Keep the weapon mod and general upgrade functionality, but provide some different weapon mods and upgrades, or at least make them feel a little different.

New glory kill moves, just so it doesn't feel like the same game as Doom'16, but stays consistent enough that it feels like a natural progression from the last game.

I don't mind the arenas, but make them less obvious. As for general level design, cues should be taken from the Foundry level, the Argent Facility level and the Khadingir Sanctum.

Yeah, another obvious improvement would simply be more possible glory kills.

When I run up to the front of of a demon and get ready to glory kill them, I shouldn't know exactly what's going to happen every single time. It seemed like the fodder enemies had a much larger variety than the bigger enemies.

I think something that contributes to that is how the bigger enemies tend to be harder to approach from angles other than the front, and how when they're injured they tend to just slink down or fall forward instead of stumbling around wildly like the smaller enemies tend to do.

I personally don't like idea about Hell On Earth sequel - Hell & Earth sounds much better. Maybe episodes when you walking between future and past.

I support this. The first 6 levels of Doom 2 do not look anything like space/orbital docks. But we are over 20 years later. Some really big hangers, with huge height variation are expected. They could be the beginning of the new game, as Doomguy returns to Earth.

I'd like to see some kind of reinterpretation of the Slough of Despair, where it feels like an evil swampland or some such.

Check Map 22 of Sergeant Mark IV's Starter Pack. I think it looks just like "an evil swampland".
(E3M2 looks like a desolate hellish canyon for me)

Better if id does not expand the arsenal with slightly changed variations of already present weapons. Doom is not supposed to have expansive weapon roster - all weapons are intended to have a specific role, so they should stay clearly different. If anything, they may provide alternative skins for weapons (I demand a remade classic SSG! :>).
However, in my opinion there should be some new weapons - but not too much. If for the new game id ports Doom 4's multiplayer-weapons (especially the Static Rifle, it really deserves that) to singleplayer, the arsenal will start to get crowded. I think that a proper greande launcher is a must, because a indirect attack weapon is sometimes very needed. Then, maybe a flamethrower, since a sustained fire from a close-range weapon can also come quite in handy against hordes of charging enemies (and Chaingun is better left for medium-distance fighting). And, maybe, the Crucible's sword form as a faster alternative to the Chainsaw. That would be enough for me.

I'd like to see some sort of mobility mechanic added, like diving or sliding. Maybe a Gears of War-style roll. They talk all the time about how 'movement is the key to survival".

I've been mulling your response over in my brain for a while and I'm sorry to say that I still don't quite get it.

You want to keep the exact same guns we got in Doom 2016? Completely unchanged? But with a couple new ones added on to them? Do I interpret that right?

Suit yourself, but if we were to start at a Government run Star Port (though I suppose it could be a UAC one), it would make more sense if the Doom Slayer picked up a government pistol from a Government Security Guard rather than the same UAC pistol we had in Doom'16.

I never said anything about changing their roles though, but you could still modify them a little.
Doom 3's chaingun, for instance, was ranked as weapon 5, even if it technically served a similar role as the one we got in Doom'2016 (high-powered hit-scan weapon with a spin-up delay), which is ranked as 8.
And while we're at it, OG Doom had the chaingun ranked as 4 and there was nothing really wrong with that game.
You could easily have a new chaingun in a sequel to Doom'2016 that doesn't look or sound exactly like the one in Doom'2016 and behaves mildly different, but still serves the same basic role.
I guess my point is that I want the sequel to feel like an actual new game, rather than an extended expansion pack, and that is best done by providing the player with an all-new arsenal, but you still gotta keep it Doom.

The multiplayer weapons, I'd rather see all new weapons instead TBH, though weapons inspired by them could be cool.

And I honestly don't get why people want a flamethrower in a Doom game. The plasma rifle is basically a futuristic high tech flamethrower/assault rifle hybrid, but it would be pretty neat if the plasma rifle could flash burn demons ;)

I'd like to make it clear that I only entertain the idea of destruction and vehicles, I don't necessarily yearn for it. Part of me just wants to know if it would work at all as a gameplay mechanic, but I bet it would feel to un-Doomy to most people, and probably conjure up comparison to the cancelled Doom 4.

What if there were spinning tops that would gain height depending on how fast Doomguy ran on them?

First, thanks for thinking so deeply about a response. That is actually a compliment to me :)

Not really. Actually, as I am writing this, I am also mulling over how to overhaul Doom's 4 weapons and their mods for a next game (like giving the scopes to their respective weapons by default and making new mods instead), including MP weapons and flamethrower with grenade launcher. But knowing me, I will probably just keep it inside the bowels of my computer, because a modder I am not :)

I do not want to have multiple variations of the base weapons of Doom (in the same game), that is all. So no multiple models of the Pistol, multiple Shotguns, multiple Rocket Launcher and so on (that would actually go well along with my DOOMED overhaul project :) ). There might be replacements for Doom 4's weapons, like that Govt-brand pistol you mentioned, with slightly altered stats. But no going beyond that - this is what I mean by keeping it true to Doom's formula.

Now, I must admit I have no idea what are you talking about. What are those weapon ranks?

Static Cannon FTW! :D

Why a flamethrower? It is a whole different beast than Plasmagun ('Plasma Rifle' sounds much better, but is incorrect - why you would need rifling for such a weapon?). Plasmagun is essentially a high-powered automatic rifle. Flamethrower, however, is a specialist close range weapon. It can cover more area than Plasmagun and start fires, further reinforcing its area-denial capability. Last but not least, it burns demons. You may think that plasma is even worse, but because of its extremely high temperature the victim may actually die very quickly, before it feels any significant pain. But the flamethrower would cover demons in ignited liquid that causes unspeakable pain (even to them), paralyzes, and makes them either suffocate (the more fortunate option) or die from numerous 4th degree burns. Much more thoroughly brutal than flash-burning with plasma (probably one of the worst ways to kill). I think such a weapon would fit nicely in a game about battling demons (frying people is too much to me, but roasting these demon scum serves them well, as a payback for invading Earth). Even a plasmathrower (present in some Brutal Doom versions) would not make such an effect, again because of the plasma's temperature. So there you have it why I would like to get flamethrower in Doom.
(also, the Doom 4's plasma gun is a letdown, since it does not feature flash-burning or something like it - it looks like you are hurling marbles at demons... in any case, I am happy that shotguns got a worthy treatment this time!)
