Harder Ultimate Doom?

Recommended Posts

I remember reading somewhere that one of the devs' biggest regrets regarding Doom was that they had to design levels with pistol start in mind, thus making the game's difficulty rather low. Personally, I can breeze through the whole game - with the possible exception of Thy Flesh Consumed - without dying once on Ultra Violence.

I was wondering if there was such thing as a custom mapset that took the first three vanilla episodes and redesigned them to be more challenging. I already know of Maps of Chaos, but to be honest, they do not feel much harder, as they balance the increased monster population with generous ammunition placement - even more than in the original maps - as well as earlier access to powerful weapons.

Look no further. Doom Extra Hard is EXACTLY what you've been looking for. Or DMINATOR.WAD, if you restrict yourself just to E1.

Either play each map from pistol start or play on nightmare, it has been proven beatable over and over even if many won't even consider it.

Thanks! Anything more polished, though? It looks kind of cheaply made and buggy.

Well, Doom Extra Hard was pretty much an untested hack job, done by kids who thought it would be cool back in 1994 ;-)

DMINATOR.WAD is slightly more polished, even if it's nothing more than a modified E1. At least it wasn't made with a randomizer! I obviously can't provide downloads for either.

Does this also imply the Overkill version of MoC isn't "hard enough" ?

I have tried DMINATOR just today and I can say that it's really good. doomedsda.us (i hope I diddn't misspell the URL) has a copy of it. It's only E1, though.

Pretty sure I played one of those modified E1 things where there was a cyberdemon with his head stuck in the ceiling blocking the E1M1 exit (and there wasn't enough guns to kill him). Might have been on one of those shovelware CDs you can find on archive.org.
Oh, and I think the teleport pad right at the beginning of E2M1 was blocked by a spiderdemon stuck in the wall (just in case you got tired of punching that cyberdemon and decided to try your luck on E2...)
Well that was the worst one. Others had cool changed like turning E1M1 into a hell map.

Or, if you're uncomfortable with Nightmare's monster respawning, play on UV with -fast parameter.

I've found this to be a really excellent addon. It makes the monsters faster and deadlier without adding any wacky new behavior or increasing their hit points, so the game still plays fast and your weapons hit just as hard, but there's less room for error. It also has a lot of mutators for extra tweaking.

Yeah, I know of monster difficulty mods, but what I am really looking for wads that redesign the classic vanilla maps to be harder.

Here's a doomworld quadrology :

E1 : No sleep for the dead : https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/m-o/nos4dead
E2 : Hell clash : https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/g-i/helclash
E3 : Incineration : https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/p-r/pe3_inci
E4 : Thy Flesh - Turned into a draft-excluder : https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/Ports/d-f/draftex

Cannonball also made ConC.E.R.Ned which replaces first three episodes.

The problem with those is that if they reuse IWAD map geometry, they are likely to be rejected from /idgames. (Some of them had managed to get there anyway, but I think nowadays the control is stricter.)

As I have said before here, the difficulty setting of Doom is incredibly suitable for every newcomers or experienced players in my opinion. Now, if you're up for a real challenge try a pistol start on E4M2 lol.

Would you be offended if I said yes? :/

No, I wouldn't. Play it on Nightmare if it's still not hard enough. Or if not that masochistic, this.
