Any way to right-click a wad to instantly play on a port?

Recommended Posts

After something like the windows send-to menu, because dragging a wad to an exe is annoying as hell when you have several explorer windows open. I don't think any of the launchers have a right-click context menu.

Use a launcher, like ZDL for example.

And looking for PWADs in an "Open File..." dialog? That's so 1990s, man.

In practical terms, what will prevent most (but not all) ports from working from a context menu is that doing so will likely fuck up their working path. Even if they can be configured to look for IWADs in a specific, fixed folder (in theory, all can use %DOOMWADDIR% no matter wad), running from a context menu may also interfere with reading their own confiuration. A launcher takes care of these aspects, and avoids trickery like e.g. keeping multiple copies of the IWADs in every source port folder.

You can actually use Open With... with a launcher like ZDL. If you assign WAD files to open with ZDL, ZDL will open and put the WAD in question at the bottom of the WAD stack.

If you're trying to play wads designed for vanilla Doom and many boom wads, Odamex can do this just by associating Odamex with a .wad file.

If you wanna get all technical about it, you could try this guide to make a custom context-menu items for WADs. You could even make different entries for different source ports, if you want to.

Doom Retro and PrBoom+ support associating a .wad file with them, too, IIRC.

And also ZDoom, GZDoom, Zandronum, ZDaemon, Eternity, EDGE... I think almost every port does.

Your best bet is using exes unless you know how to get your right click menu to have "Open with Zdoom" or something.

-- Zdoom Launcher --
http://zdoom.org/wiki/ZDL

-- Doom Explorer --
http://doomutils.ucoz.com/

-- Zdoom Executor --
http://zdexe.sourceforge.net/

-- Zdaemon has a launcher --

For Vanilla only

-- Chocolate Doom --

-- Eternity Engine --

I personally use IDE (old version of Doom explorer) for singleplayer/multiplayer needs.

WOW it's almost as if port/wad association is not a unique or new feature. Crazy.

But the title of the post asks for ways to simply right click on a wad to play....

I was forgetting that I could simply associate it with the exe but now firefox wants to open wads by default instead of saving them, which is okay, but the radio button defaults to "open" and I can find no way of changing it.

Use this

It's a great Launcher. It keep tracks of how many times you played a Wad and the levels you beat, etc. Also it allow you to add tabs, so you can organize your wads. For example a have a tab with all the Master Levels for Doom 2, sort of like a modern version of DoomIT.

Where/how is it obtaining K/I/S statistics? >_>

If you run the wad with Zdoom, it uses the save game to parse the stats, with PrboomPlus uses the -levelstats and with CNdoom uses -printstats.
Other ports are not supported when it comes to display the stats of the levels.

That Launcher is just awesome.
