is man made climate change on the list? oh wait it's america

When it comes to the environment, I'm particularly worried about the high level of acidity in the oceans. Its causing marine life to reproduce less, to the point of extinction.

I am "very afraid" of the future.

Look at the state we're in.
Increasing population. The sorry state of the environment.
Would you bring your children to such a world?

Sheesh, "corruption of government officials" is the highest? Wow

how do people worry so much about terrorist attacks? there are so many constant, more present pressures on a person, no less self-inflicted at that

^ because it wasn't an open ended question. "10 fears of which the highest percentage of Americans reported being afraid or very afraid" roughly translates to "we gave people a list of items we chose to rate on a scale of 1-5 of how afraid they are"

For all we know it could be the top ten out of fifteen questions where questions 1-5 were barney the dinosaur, grandmas cookies, fluffy pillows, etc. That's probably why things like home invasions, sexual predators, and terminal illness isn't on the list. Ya know, the kind of stuff that's all over the news all the time

Also both presidential candidates are making claims of voter fraud and that the election is rigged, so political corruption is no surprise. Also Democrats have been historically raised taxes for government programs and economists suggest that Republican Donald Trump's tax reform should negatively effect the middle class. Making economic collapse make sense too.

I find it an increasingly shaky argument. It only works on the premise we are all equal. If anything, being aware we face problems makes YOU more important than idiots who will shit out kids with a greater tendency to carry on being harmful to the environment.

Overpopulation in itself isn't a problem. Overpopulation of imbeciles is the issue. Current Western culture is essentially negative eugenics.

If you're smart enough to fear for the future, you should probably have kids.

Terrorist attacks is something you have no perceived control over. Powerlessness is what scares people. You can see the same trend in all top10 fears stated here.

You could argue electric grid failure or world-war scenarios are much worse in the "man-made disasters" category. But those are abstract in the mind of most people, as they have yet to happen. Terrorist attacks are weekly and you cannot get away from it unless you stop reading the press. The image is strong, so is the emotional reaction.

Yep. These types of surveys are fucking bullshit. How people can't see the blatant agenda with these sorts of things boggles my mind.

Do your best to avoid needlessly worrying about crap you can't control. When your number is up, it's up. There's nothing wrong about acknowledging that and then letting it go. Took me a long time to figure that out. I'm still working on it, in fact.

I respectfully disagree. Raging against the dying of the light is more healthy than being apathetic about it.

lol.

Ghosts, clowns and zombies are on the list.

The problem comes when clowns are a real threat and something similar to zombies can be made with a certain drug.

"Economic/Financial Collapse" gets my vote. That debt clock ain't dropping anytime soon. What is it now, 19.6 trillion dollars I believe?

You forgot the ghosts.

Really? Zombies is on there? Well, I guess there always is that dread of fiction becoming reality, but seems a little silly.

'Course, I wonder if fears of the dead returning from the grave existed before 'zombies' as we know them was evena thing. I guess that'd be the same as a fear of ghosts or even older fears of vampirism. I don't remember where I heard it or read it from, but I guess once in Britain a long time ago, bodies were staked after death in fear of them coming back as vampires.

So I suppose that, even backed by superstitions, it's a somewhat tangible fear. I mean, it's literally what nightmares could be.

Of course zombies are on the list, what do you think is under all that orange spray tan?

That is a dumb infographic. All of those horrific events can be categorized in multiple ways. Such as being criminal, man-made, economic, and leading to death of love ones, or even all of the possible options.
