NationStates

I've seen no threads on this, so here we go.

NationStates is a nation simulation game. Create a nation according to your political ideals and care for its people. Or deliberately oppress them. It's up to you.

Home page
FAQ

Gameplay information from Wikipedia:

Players set up their nation by answering a short questionnaire about their intentions for its economy, civil rights and political freedoms, giving it a name, a flag from current countries and territories or their own, a national animal, a currency, and an official motto. The player's response to the initial questionnaire defines the type of government they are running.

New nations appear in one of five main game regions (known in the game as "feeders") located in the NationStates version of the Pacific Ocean (The, East, West, North, and South Pacific), but nations are able to move to other regions, or create their own. Nations that remain inactive and are resurrected are put into three "sinker" regions called Osiris, Balder, and Lazarus, all named after characters that purportedly rose from the dead. Nations ejected or banned from a region are moved to a region known as "The Rejected Realms".

Gameplay hinges on deciding government policies: four times each day the player is presented with an automatically assigned "issue", such as choosing whether to allow a right-wing protest march, or dealing with food shortages in their country. The player chooses a government stance from a list of options, or may choose to dismiss the problem. Each action or inaction affects the prosperity of the player's country, and may have unforeseen effects. For instance, granting greater political freedom will lead to more civil unrest. Some issues are written by the game's developers, while others are submitted by players. For the first 30 days of a nation's existence, only game-created issues can be answered, but after that period any approved issue can be answered. The player's responses to issues affect the nation's status in three main factors: the level of Political Freedoms and Civil Rights and the strength of the Economy. As of March 24, 2016, users have developed 500 issues to be used in game.

Based on the nation's personal, economic and political freedoms, the nation is assigned to one of 27 government types, from Anarchy, to Inoffensive Centrist Democracy, to Psychotic Dictatorship. Although there is no way of "winning" the game, daily "World Census reports" are compiled for each region and the entire world, ranking nations on anything from economic strength to the most liberal public nudity laws.

Outside the basic technical parameters of nation play, players can also move freely between regions, "take over" opposing regions by flooding them with foreign nations (a popular gameplay tactic also called "raiding"), interact on the game's chat boards, vote on resolutions at the World Assembly (which affect member nations' stats much the same way issues do), and chat and/or roleplay their countries on the official game forums. Many of the regions also have separate regional forums that concern regional politics, fairs, etc.

Hey, this is an interesting game too, try it.

I can't think of any other useful information, so here's my nation: https://www.nationstates.net/nation=modern_judah

Yah, I've done this once or twice.

Currently I got this rat hole called Doomtropolis.

The Rogue Nation of Doomtropolis is a huge, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service, sprawling nuclear power plants, and ubiquitous missile silos. The hard-nosed population of 455 million Doomtropolisians have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The medium-sized government prioritizes Defense, although Education, Welfare, and Law & Order are also considered important, while Social Policy isn't funded at all. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Doomtropolis City. The average income tax rate is 38.5%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The Doomtropolisian economy, worth 24.2 trillion Blood Diamonds a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with significant contributions from Tourism, Pizza Delivery, and Beef-Based Agriculture. Black market activity is notable. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 53,182 Blood Diamonds, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.7 times as much as the poorest.

The nation is currently revamping its entire education system, corporate lawyers are joyfully combing through the new tax code for any new loopholes for their clients, scenic mountain valleys are flooded with water as damming projects get underway, and Doomtropolis has designated Doomtropolis City as its capital city. Crime is almost non-existent, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Doomtropolis's national animal is the Donald, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Motto is "Fuckin' Rats, Mate."

Max Barry! Hah, now there's a happy coincidence. The premise of the game reminded me immediately of the fictional PC game Despot, which is what the protagonist of Iain Banks's Complicty plays when he's not shooting up, jerking off or being a hack journalist. Nothing to raise the eyebrows there, obviously; I picked up the novel from the library at the same time as I did one of Max Barry's works, whose novel Jennifer Government the game is apparently inspired by.

Not bad. I'll take this token of circumstance and build on it - will give the game a spin.

The Allied States of AGM is a fledgling, genial nation, renowned for its compulsory military service, frequent executions, and complete lack of prisons. The compassionate, democratic, devout population of 5 million AGMians are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Spirituality, and Education. The average income tax rate is 71.6%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The basket case AGMian economy, worth 66.3 billion bitcoins a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector is led by the Tourism industry, with significant contributions from Information Technology, Soda Sales, and Trout Farming. Average income is 13,252 bitcoins, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. AGM's national animal is the flesh worm, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

I guess this might be fun. At least interesting.

This is mine right now

The Protectorate of Deimosan is a fledgling, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service, irreverence towards religion, and absence of drug laws. The quiet, industrious population of 5 million Deimosanians have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The relatively small government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 13.5%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The Deimosanian economy, worth 188 billion kannas a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Pizza Delivery industry, with major contributions from Tourism, Furniture Restoration, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 37,650 kannas, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

The police insist that racism does not exist, high-income earners pay a 100% tax rate, political parties are banned from advertising and receiving private donations, and the government is attempting to revitalize a gutted private sector. Crime, especially youth-related, is almost non-existent, thanks to a capable police force. Deimosan's national animal is the crocodile.

Deimosan is ranked 153,917th in the world and 1,908th in 10000 Islands for Healthiest Citizens, with 1 Bananas Ingested Per Day.

From what I can tell, that's a bad status.

I got added to WA in less than an hour and I started on the 18th.

Also I got a ton of region telegram invites but I eventually settled with 10,000 Islands region.

I deleted all the region invite telegrams i got initially. The North Pacific is just fine.

Edit: just because of one issue, my nation turned into a Corrupt Dictatorship, economy went down, so did political freedom. Wow, right? But as some guy once said: shit happens.

Similar issue happened to me as well. I didn't allow an android to become a lawyer and I got reclassified to a "Psychotic Dictatorship". But now it's "up" to corrupt dictatorship.

Very true. My motto is a shitty Google Translation saying "The original East lead."

Yeah I played the game back in 2004 or something. Back then you could cycle through all the current events in about 2 months if you received 2 of them per day. I got somewhere around 200 million people. It ended up being something like Environmentalist Kleptocratic Shogunate or some gibberish and I really thought the game lacked anything beyond a yes or no answer, or even a purge the bishopric office of your capital city option. And there was nothing resembling war, trade, or discretionary spending. God that was years ago and I didn't even have real world problems except being upset about Gulf War 2. Oh yeah and all the addicts were roleplaying with each other in some kind of masturbatory literary email member-circle behavior.

How much activity goes on in your region? I keep getting endorsements, notices, telegrams (mainly info to help me) everyday, and usually in every few minutes.

I kept an eye on you, and your endorsements are still at 2, and your not a newbie there. Why? Aren't endorsements a good thing for your region?

The region I'm in is fairly active. My only guess of why you are getting flooded with endorsements is that people are using bots, and/or the fact that your region (North Pacific) is the biggest region. My region (Land of Kings and Emperors) is 37th.

Wait Voros, you wot m8?

This is why challenge is kinda strange to me. You challenged me two times and I didn't even remotely notice. Then again, I'm sort of a chucklefuck because I challenged multiple nations that literally were founded 2-8 minutes ago.

Edit: I just gave you another win, lol.

I wanted to see what "challenge" does. So why not on someone I'm familiar with?

Protip: Go to https://www.nationstates.net/page=list_nations/censusid=3?start=0

You should be on "Population".

Go to the last page (You may have to go through 1-5 more pages before you find a nation)

Challenge some of them, if they registered like 5 minutes ago, most of them are an easy win.
