LOLCODE

Recommended Posts

Browsing the web, I decided to have a look at some esoteric programming languages. One of them was LOLCODE.

Basically, its a programming language that uses "internet talk" to write programs.

Hello World in C

#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
printf("Hello World!\n");
return 0;
}
Hello World in LOLCODE
HAI 1.2
CAN HAS STDIO?
VISIBLE "HELLO WORLD!!!!1!!1!!"
KTHXBYE
Literally. Thats only the tip of the iceberg.
Website

And I thought Brainfuck was absurd.

That's insane. I wonder what the guys that came up with stuff like this could accomplish if memes weren't their cup of tea.

The sheer insanity of it would be cool for me to learn someday. But I've got to master C, then C++ first.
Next time, baby.

This is hilarious. People around me are giving me funny looks because I can't stop laughing while getting ready to go to a funeral.

You don't want them having fun with a hobby project because they could be curing cancer or something?

LOLCODE is based on LOLCAT syntax. But it's not the best esoteric language: Whitespace is cool because you can hide it in another text. For example you can write a C program that is also a Whitespace program. But my favorite is probably Piet because it's not even a text language.

Brainfuck isn't really that absurd either, it can be viewed as a very basic assembly language, and none of the commands are very esoteric. Yes, Brainfuck's "machine language" (viewing it as an assembly) is fairly restrictive, but that's the only hard part about it.

If you want a language that's really meant to be hard for humans to wrap their head around, try Intercal.

Or one that is almost practically impossible: Malbolge

I just saw those two as well, but I like this LOLCODE for being so funny and not as impossible as those two. But Intercal and Malborge are something else to deal with. Malborge looks like a bunch of gibberish characters splattered everywhere, while Intercal is... Interesting, but the syntax is a headache to deal with. I just discovered the existence of these languages, just so you know, which is why I thought Brainfuck was absurd.

There's the Shakespeare programming language :

The Infamous Hello World Program.

Romeo, a young man with a remarkable patience.
Juliet, a likewise young woman of remarkable grace.
Ophelia, a remarkable woman much in dispute with Hamlet.
Hamlet, the flatterer of Andersen Insulting A/S.

                    Act I: Hamlet's insults and flattery.

                    Scene I: The insulting of Romeo.

[Enter Hamlet and Romeo]

Hamlet:
 You lying stupid fatherless big smelly half-witted coward!
 You are as stupid as the difference between a handsome rich brave
 hero and thyself! Speak your mind!

 You are as brave as the sum of your fat little stuffed misused dusty
 old rotten codpiece and a beautiful fair warm peaceful sunny summer's
 day. You are as healthy as the difference between the sum of the
 sweetest reddest rose and my father and yourself! Speak your mind!

 You are as cowardly as the sum of yourself and the difference
 between a big mighty proud kingdom and a horse. Speak your mind.

 Speak your mind!

[Exit Romeo]

                    Scene II: The praising of Juliet.

[Enter Juliet]

Hamlet:
 Thou art as sweet as the sum of the sum of Romeo and his horse and his
 black cat! Speak thy mind!

[Exit Juliet]

                    Scene III: The praising of Ophelia.

[Enter Ophelia]

Hamlet:
 Thou art as lovely as the product of a large rural town and my amazing
 bottomless embroidered purse. Speak thy mind!

 Thou art as loving as the product of the bluest clearest sweetest sky
 and the sum of a squirrel and a white horse. Thou art as beautiful as
 the difference between Juliet and thyself. Speak thy mind!

[Exeunt Ophelia and Hamlet]

                    Act II: Behind Hamlet's back.

                    Scene I: Romeo and Juliet's conversation.

[Enter Romeo and Juliet]

Romeo:
 Speak your mind. You are as worried as the sum of yourself and the
 difference between my small smooth hamster and my nose. Speak your
 mind!

Juliet:
 Speak YOUR mind! You are as bad as Hamlet! You are as small as the
 difference between the square of the difference between my little pony
 and your big hairy hound and the cube of your sorry little
 codpiece. Speak your mind!

[Exit Romeo]

                    Scene II: Juliet and Ophelia's conversation.

[Enter Ophelia]

Juliet:
 Thou art as good as the quotient between Romeo and the sum of a small
 furry animal and a leech. Speak your mind!

Ophelia:
 Thou art as disgusting as the quotient between Romeo and twice the
 difference between a mistletoe and an oozing infected blister! Speak
 your mind!

[Exeunt]

Didn't mean to imply anything like that, I was making a joke.

My favorite part of that code snippet is how it's just people walking in, being insulted by Hamlet, and then walking back out without saying a word.

That's some cool code; interesting how it works with adj's being powers of 2 and nouns being +-1, though I would feel the need much more than with a regular coding language for a word bank, heh.

I note that on the reference page it notes that only certain neames can be used; those found in Shakespeare's plays. I wonder both how extensive that list is, as well as the adj and noun lists. Assuming here that I'm correct in the assumption that this language does not let the user define more words.

Speaking of fraggle, why is his title "Registered just to make one post" when he has a post count is over 9000?

Maybe he did register to make one post but then decided to stay a little longer.

^ill never understand why people keep saying that in response to a question related to fraggle's title. Damn, that Skakespere code though. Where's the "Hello World" part?

You have to interpret the title not as "He has written only one post since he had registered", but as "His only intention was to write one post back when he registered (but he didn't keep that intention)".

That... is probably the best answer I've heard. Now I want to find fraggle's first post.

Yep. That's it. But since it's really old and the links are dead, I have no idea what it's about.

This is a complicated question since there are multiple generations of forums on Doomworld and the current forums contain backfilled data from different sources. Certainly if you jump to the oldest location in my posting history, this appears to be my first "post" but that was actually a comment left on Doomworld's old comments section which was separate from the forums. This appears to be my first post on the current vbulletin-based forums.

But if you want my "first Doomworld forums post", you need to dig into the old bbhacks-based forums. I know the content from those forums was backfilled here but I don't see any of my old comments in my history. It might be because my old username used to contain a backtick (fraggle`). This thread may have contained my first comment on the bbhacks-based forums (as you can see, it's high quality content!)
