Hardest level in Goldeneye 64.

Recommended Posts

In your opinion, which is the hardest level in Goldeneye 64? I can safely say that Control is indeed very troubling at the end of it, but for me Aztec was by far the hardest. Playing it on 00 Agent with these Moonrakers and AR-33 soldiers that rarely miss a shot was a complete nightmare for me.

To me Aztec is the hardest level in goldeneye. Not only at the start it's nearly impossible to avoid getting damaged by the two guards on the first room, but as soon as the moonraker soldiers start spawning you pretty much tend to get hit in the back by these guys

Fuck Control. Only reason it was hard though was because Natalya enjoyed eating bullets like it was nobody's business. Otherwise, yea I'd have to agree, Aztec was the biggest bitch of all in 00. It's been a very long time since I played through it (I was only 12!) but I'm pretty sure I only beat it with supreme luck/timing, not skill.

Control was my anguish. Enemies pouring down both staircases, barely being able to turn fast enough between them. I remember just barely finishing that part, then losing Natalya to a dude that popped out when the wall opened up.

I think Train was second place, just because of that split second Ourumov sequence at the end...also meticulously trying to watch laser the bolts off the escape hatch at the end.

Come to think of it, most of Goldeneye was a nightmare to me at the time. I remember having an awful time trying to navigate Archives and Streets, and most of the game just registers in my head now as an unplayable mess. Perfect Dark is where my fondest memories lie, even though that game would probably register just as unplayable if I tried it again now.

At the start of Aztec I usually walk forward and immediatelly walk back to let the guards shoot, once they stop, I storm them with the PP7 killing them as fast as I can and using the pillars for cover, if you take too much damage in the beginning you can just forget the rest, the damage in Aztec is unreal..

Now for Control, once you hear the glass breaking during the gunfight, oh boy... You're about to have a bad day xD.

I played Control on 00 Agent, but the level is actually kind of easy if you think about it. Aztec though was a great pain.

Also, if none have heard of it there is a ROM hack of Perfect Dark called Goldeneye X which aims to be a total conversion. It works on real N64s also.

A lot of good nominations here, but I really hated Cradle, especially on 00 Agent.

I'd probably agree with you but sadly my last play-through of Goldeneye ended just after beating Control on 00 Agent. Haven't actually had the opportunity to play the Aztec mission so I'm stuck complaining about Control being the hardest.

Temple was hard...when you have to get the golden gun and walk a very precise path or else get shot the fuck up by sentry guns...yeah, no thanks.

On Perfect Agent there were too many opportunities to get royally fucked up. I've played that game through on all difficulties countless times on SP and COOP, and Area 51: Infiltration will always be my bane. The last area with random grenades being thrown, UGH. Close second for difficulty would be attack ship because it's so long and so dark, many opportunities for your health to just vanish.

Aztec by far. I want to replay Goldeneye on PC with keyboard and mouse. Some gameplay videos of the game being played on PC just fill me with nostalgia, and I want to be able to shoot accurately and fast like James Bond would in real life.

Tossup between Control, Cradle and Aztec.

Control is one long crappy escort mission, with the climax being a wide-open room in which enemies spawn not only in multiple directions, but on multiple floors. And Natalya is situated square in the middle of the room, an easy target for any enemy. Fun!

Cradle has those fucking sentry guns in super-tight rooms, enemies spawning 3 feet away and rushing said rooms, and sanic-fast Trevelyan with his AR-33. Total pain in the ass on anything above Agent.

Aztec is sheer bullshit. The AR-33-armed guards. The sentry guns hitting you through metal grates. Jaws. Moonraker guards sniping you. A sprawling level guaranteeing combat every 10 feet. Bonus levels are supposed to be tough, but the sheer difference in difficulty between Aztec and Egyptian befuddles me.

This isn't talking about 00 Agent's enemy line of sight, which makes any open area a fucking chore. Consider Surface II an honorable mention because of this.

I've played that multiple times via emulator and it doesn't at all register as unplayable to me.
