What's so special about Boom that everybody seem to use it when creating a Megawad or something like that.

It's Boomtastic.

 

 

Serious answer: Cross-port compatibility. It's become the de facto standard (though there's been recent activity as of late to possibly change that).

In a nutshell Boom maps retain the same overall game feel as vanilla stuff, but provide more scope in terms of mapping features that can be employed.

Boom provides a superset of vanilla Doom features, and, ZDoom provides a superset of vanilla Doom and Boom features. Coincidently, vanilla maps run just about everywhere, Boom maps run in many source ports, and, typically ZDoom maps run in ZDoom's family of ports.

Boom is a common set of extensions supported by a large number of source ports. If you're a mapper making levels then Boom makes for a convenient target because most players will be able to play your level regardless of what their favorite source port is - ZDoom or otherwise.

All of them are in ZDoom, the point is that some people prefer other source ports.
