Do we want a new movie based on Doom '16?

Recommended Posts

As we all know, the 2005 Doom movie was complete garbage. Other than a few wink-wink, nudge-nudge references and competent set design, there's not much to like. Its 19% Rotten Tomatoes rating is particularly indicative of its reception, and even hardcore Doomers were mostly disappointed. Like just about every game-to-movie adaptation that came before or after, it failed to capture the mood, the look or even basic plot of its source material.

Doom '16, however, has been received quite positively, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if this eventually led to a reboot. But would it be worth the trouble? I'm pretty out of the loop, so I really can't imagine who would direct it or star in it. And what about plot? Should it stick with the game's insistence on the formerly human hero being some kind of badass reverse techno-Christ, or try to go the traditional, mortal route? Should it be a shlock-fest that knows how over-the-top it is, or try to maintain some level of seriousness? Should the monsters and sets be handled as practically as possible, or should high-end CG dominate? Should it be plot-heavy with the action occurring mostly in the third act, or should it pepper action scenes throughout?

I suppose if I could have it my way, I'd go more or less wit the original plot: Space marine attacks an unscrupulous officer, is shipped to Mars for punishment, then ends up cleaning house when the UAC's experiments go awry. Mix it up with the new one by implying that UAC has created a portal to Hell and is fucking around with them demons. Give us a bit of backstory both to DoomGuy and UAC. Actually show Hell. I think maybe that might work.

Yes. Doom 2016 is basically a blank canvas. You can add a ridiculous story and it'll (most likely) sound sane enough.

There could be a number of different plots:

Plot 1:

a prequel-ish movie, focusing on the discovery of Argent, Samuel Hayden and his cancer and a WIP-Optimus-Prime, how the UAC slowly became a cult, handling several demonic breaches (which later resulted them into programming their computers to warn of demonic invasions), etc. Doomslayer gets discovered 3/4 of the movie, they take the sarcophagus while battling the demons :D and the ending would be a few weeks later, where the Doomslayer awakes (kinda like the ending of Hunger Game: Catching Fire Part 1, with Katniss' closeup of her face ending the movie).

Plot 2:

The invasion. Doomslayer awakes, remembering things like the UAC, English, humanity. During some scenes, the movie could move back and forth between Doomslayer's memories on Argent D' Nur, such as the battle of the Titan, getting the Crucible, meeting the Night Snetinels, etc. and from the battles Doomslayer encounters on Mars. Doomslayer won't speak much, other than grunts of pain and oofs of high jumps and all that. His body language should handle most of it. Of course Vega would be all around the facility, and Samuel would constantly try to talk to him. At the same time, the audience will learn many details thanks to Samuel. The focus of the movie should actually be Samuel (because he talks), while Doomslayer can be seen in action scenes, through CCTV cameras, windows and all that. The movie should be in such a way that the either Samuel or Doomslayer both show to be good protagonists, but at the same time, antagonists. We'll never know :P

Anything's possible.

Either way, nice idea.

In either case, if we get another Doom movie and they still downplay the demonic elements, then I'm going to basically lose the last remaining shred of faith I have in the capacity for Hollywood to "get it right" when it comes to game-to-movie adaptations. The first "Silent Hill" movie might be the best game adaptation so far, because while it's not the best or most original horror movie, it's astonishingly close to the source material in many ways, which was due largely to the game's creator working closely with the director, who himself is a fan of the series. That sort of dedication and friendliness between filmmaker/game designer helped make it a movie that, while not based purely on any one of the games, feels appropriate to that universe. So maybe what we need is for Marty Stratton or someone else from id to work with a director who actually gives two shits about the game.

A Doom version of Hardcore Henry please.

Do we really want 90 minutes of POV? That seems limiting from a cinematographic perspective...

I would rather see a Netflix/HBO type series because Hollywood just makes shit now days.

The UAC

A story about a corporate spy who is tasked with industrial espionage against the UAC on Mars.  As the main character climbs the tiered ranks; his loyalties and sanity are put the test as he discovers the corporations true (and strange) intentions.

oooh that's a tough question. The Doom movie is an appeal to Doom fans but also to sci fi thriller fans who may have no interest in games. I think it could be fun to think about what the movie would be like, but I can't think of any movies that were dogshit to start with and then came back with an amazing reboot. Its an endeavor that seems much more risky than making a movie based on an action game with a hollow shell of a story was in the first place. Even with the investors and film crew and a ton of movie directing experience I dont have, I still dont think I would find it to be worth my time or money to try and make this work.

We have the reboot PC game, and we have the reboot board game. Yeah, a movie would be nice. More or less... I think the 2005 movie was intended for a joke, especially that FPS scene. Still, usually movies adapted of games or vice versa rarely succeed? Not sure though.

Two things off the top of my head that are an absolute must in getting it right:

1. Character should be a normal human and not a techno demigod. Makes them more relatable as the protagonist and makes the demons more threatening.

2. Pepper action throughout, don't do a slow buildup. This is Doom, after all, it's all about the action. The 2005 film did this, and it was decidedly un-Doom-like. Even Doom 3, for its slower pace and stronger emphasis on horror themes did not forget about action at all.

I would like to see a Doom movie with just a few sentences dialogue and the rest of it brutal and doom like slaughter :P

^ Yes, this!

That's something that I found very disappointing with Doom 4 -- in the original Doom you are a normal natural human marine. This adds to the suspense, because you are not by nature any less vulnerable than the others who died or were "zombified." However, in the new Doom, it is implied that you are some unnatural hell creature yourself, by which the game attempts to explain why you are superhuman. But you're not supposed to be superhuman, you're supposed to be jes' dat gud.

I know you're joking, but I'll say this anyway: movies are a very different medium than video games. This would not be a good approach. There need to be characters and they need to develop.

@42PercentHealth We're both on the same page for the most part. I'll say that I have no problem with anything in Doom 4. Doomguy was made that way because it follows up on Doom 64's ending where he stayed in hell, so obviously after all he's been through + becoming some kind of guardian from the inside would have destroyed what little humanity he had left. Not to mention that it was an internalization of what he's been turned into by fans.

OK, didn't realize that was part of the "canon" (never played Doom 64). Dunno, I still think I'd rather see a "normal guy" protagonist, personally.

What, for the climate? The economy? So he could live closer to his mom? :-P Just kidding...

I would LOVE to see an in-house 30-40 minute movie made just like that commercial. It should be shorter because Doom doesn't need unnecessary padding.

I wouldn't trust it. Movies based on video games are just so unpredictable. Look at what we got for Warcraft; it wasn't terrible but why the hell did they make the movie based on Lothar's story? Why not start with Sargeras or the Titans or something?

They wanted to start with the original game, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

Honestly, whenever I think of a new Doom movie, I imagine a prequel to first Doom.

A relatively young and charming fellow had just finished shaving himself while 19-2000 plays in the background. He cocks a finger gun at himself and smiles wickedly. Today he is going on a "field trip" with the rest of the platoon, to the jungles sprawling along the coast of the what used to be Adriatic Sea. A relatively short mission, a picnic basically, as they have to escort some UAC guys sent to extract data from some "land satellites". Not even two nights staying there, he will be home just by Friday. Then a suit up session occurs, where our young soldier buckles his belt, cleans his boots, putting on a t-shirt, you name it (keep in mind 19-2000 is still playing). He then finds a carrot, and kinda shoves it over to a brown rabbit's cage, with a cutesy plaque reading Daisy. Then he arrives at the family table, and only people awaiting him there is his younger radical brother who is a hardcore protester against UAC's "human and work ethics" (rumours of homeless people being kidnapped off street for experimentation doesn't help), so they don't talk to each other. On the other side is his grandfather, William Blaze B., one of the first "space pioneers", people who ventured into space either on their own interest or in a name of a megacorp (UAC comes in mind, along with ACME and in one stupid case, Cosmo-Cola). They are all enjoying some cereals, as the parents of two brothers are heard lamenting in the other room, for seemingly no reason, until it was determined it was about lunch.

They just can't make up their minds as the husband is tired of eating peas and broccoli every single day. The grandpa pioneer ventures off the table to either support Dad or Mom, by just singing "You've gotta eat your vegetableees...!", and thus Dad proclaims "Enough... IS ENOUGH!!! IVE HAAAAAD IT WITH THESE MOTHERFUCKING VEGETABLES ON MY MOTHERFUCKING MENU!!! Either way, gotta shoot. Those robots aren't going to maintain themselves... Oh wait, they can... THEN WHAT THE FUCK AM I EVEN DOING?!"

And the younger brother starts flicking cereals at our young hero with a spoon and also mocking him by singing "Murder murder. All I do is murder. Do I know anything else? Ask my commander!". The young hero starts flicking back cereal while making "swoosh swoosh" noises. Eventually a bird lands by the window, so they both start to flick cereal at it until it managed to get angry and it started flying into the house tipping over some shit. Our young hero realizes now would be a good time to dissappear, as if he doesn't leave soon, he wouldn't leave at all. He grabs his bag and drives off in his hover "junker" car, a one-seat stunt hovercar (his parents drive a truck, and his bro doesn't drive at all). While driving to the compound, "Whiskey in the jar" is playing in the background, as our optimistic young hero plays the rhytm, with pictures of towering apartment blocks somewhere near the center of his town. When stopping for the red light, along stops a truck filled with blue/green hood clad young people (teenagers to college students). He smiles at them, then when they notice the UAC bumper sticker on his junker, they start growling and extending their middle fingers. Our hero laughs along and lands in the compound.

*cue boring political economical energy issues*

*cue a lot of talking before they finally land by the jungle with the land satellite*

*usual marching to the position*

*after being led by a local, one of the UAC asshats whip out a pistol, shooting the local. Now UAC iz evul oh noo*

The commander sees the work of this UAC asshat as a inspiration, so he orders his troops to open fire at any natives going round because he wants to impress the Elite, who were only interested in the data.

*obligatory campfire sequence*

Then one of the soldiers see a white goat, followed by other three. Then they see a old lady, and a teenager, much like our young hero's younger brother. The old lady has a walking stick. The young teen carries a staff.

Of fucking course, one goat saw something interesting with the soldiers, so it starts marching forward. The kid runs at front, trying to redirect the goat back to the herd. But he only bumps into a tall "sentry", one of the soldiers standing tall and wide like towers. Of course, the commander gets a hardon, and orders the soldiers to open fire at the old lady, the kid and the goats. Of course, when not getting greedy with glory, our hero recognizes how far would the commander go with licking the UAC's boot, and tries to get some sense into his superior. Of course, this doesn't work out as intended, so before falling unconscious he sees and hears the rhytm of assault rifles firing.

Basically from here, we see him getting court-martialed, sent to Mars and whatever, learning to deal with it on the Red Planet, a place of ultimate Boredoom.

I think everyone else knows what happens.

I guess, but the lore of the Warcraft universe is SO grand. It leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Plus there were much more important characters to elaborate on than Lothar and Medivh.

I nominate myself to write it.

So, here's what I can come up with in about ten minutes.

Sticking to something that draws from the new game similarly to what the original movie did to Doom 3's sets, visuals, etc, then you should at least get something that looks the part. I really don't think having 90 minutes of a space man running around shooting things and then staring at a talking tin can would be very entertaining, though. I'd hazard that you could get away with taking a few liberties by having other characters (surviving elite guards) in an uneasy alliance with the Doomslayer. Somewhat similar to the relationship the crew of the crashed ship had with Riddick in Pitch Black. The guards could serve as bodycount and the actual human characters, struggling to come to grips with the fact that they've been manipulated into and by a dangerous cult for years, to the sole benefit of its ringleaders. Some would be lost, others would swear vengeance, others would go into denial and be driven deeper into fanaticism. Maybe one could shrug it off, having figured out the entire thing was a cult from the beginning, playing along solely to not be the one sacrificed on that alter this week.

The marine could be a wildcard character, both helping and jeopardizing the satellite protagonists' mission along the path to his own goals. Though repeatedly clashing with both the villainous and heroic guards in the group whenever there aren't demons to shoot, his latent drive for justice (hinted at in the game with his rescuing of VEGA) would prevent him from directly bringing harm to any of the non-supreme-asshole ones.

A bit generic, but the game doesn't give much in the way of typical narrative structure.

I think there should be frequent first person shots in action scenes, and anywhere else where it might prove interesting. Just as another camera angle of many that would be used, not whole sequences, and not only at the end.

Definitely yes! The Doom movie from 2005 was not satisfying enough. I think the new Doom movie needs to be pure action, please no drama-side-love-stories, which you can see in every series nowadays. I would like to see something like the "Fight Like Hell"-Trailer, I wouldn't care if it's completely CGI.

Also, they could just take the story from Doom 4, that should be good enough.

I actually thought the 2005 film was alright as a generic sci-fi action popcorn flick, plus the set design captured that Doom 3 vibe quite well. A newer, better one would certainly be welcome though and Doom 16 has lots of good visuals to draw inspiration from.

I agree, it's a good enough popcorn flick. I actually enjoy it. It's no masterpiece, but it's not nearly as bad as everyone says it is.
