isn't it kinda obvious that most people are gonna say doom? i mean, come on, this is DOOMworld, not DUKEworld :p

There is no definitive answer.

Duke Nukem 3D definitely has the better textures but I never could warm up to most of its monsters.

Doom on the other hand has great monsters but only very generic textures.

In terms of map design, even after so many years, my favorite game is still Redneck Rampage.

Second episode of Duke is still legitimately scary in my opinion, while in Doom pretty much everything feels like arcade fun now. Too bad fighting in Duke is not that enjoyable overall.

Quake

Anymore, I'd agree.

Duke3D is like... well, let's just say it's a bit further down on my list of favorite FPS games.

I think Duke Nukem: Time to Kill was even the first shooter I played on the PS1, good times, splitscreen multiplayer with my brother or sister.

Duke Nukem 3D is a great game that I can still pick up and play today (although that would have to be through a source-port), but when it comes to which game aged the best I think Doom did it much better. I think Carmack and co made a smart decision by making the game abstract and not attempt to build realistic looking structures. This way, the technical limitations are a lot less obvious when playing. Duke Nukem 3D has some amazing looking levels sprinkled with tons of details, but I can't help but feel like I'm walking through a façade each time I play it.

My point goes to Doom for being the more timeless game, but this is just small margin seeing as both games are classics.

Gameplay wise: Doom for sure

Feature and Graphic wise: Duke Nukem 3D.

Duke Nukem is a good game, but not always getting ammo from dead foes really annoys me

Doom beats Duke in level design, enemy design, music, bosses, weaponry and pretty much everything else except humor and a consistent art style.

Honestly I always thought Duke was gimmicky BS relying on sexist dudebrah humor that wore thin after an hour. Strangely, I liked the side-scrolling games better than the FPS games.

This is a pretty unfair poll. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Both games run on different engines supporting different features, with different game design. I only played the first episode on DN3D on an Android, which was surprisingly easy to control. On PC, the mouselook felt horrendous. Same goes for Blood. But it was fun.

You might as well say CoD vs Halo.

i never really got into Duke Nukem. i've had it for years now and never even bothered to finish the first episode. something about it just doesn't grab me like Doom does. i also agree with Mr. Freeze that Duke's character is sorta gimmicky. Doomguy is a cooler character without even trying, i think, and Doom in general is just more interesting to me than Duke Nukem. i don't even know the plot of Duke Nukem. something with aliens, i think?

Duke3D.

I don't even know why, i love it! But if we compare Duke's episode 2 vs DOOM's episode 2 then there isn't any competition, Doom wins.

For me though, Duke Forever 2013 and Episode 1 and 3 of DN3D beat Doom by a long shot.

I'm one of the few people who actually didn't like Duke Nukem 3d. To me the game was meh.

I'm with you, I always found it ugly and clunky.

I love them both but I do have a fondness for the sexist shenanigans and hyperbolic machismo of Duke 3D.  I was genuinely shocked (and delighted) by much of the vulgar content of Duke 3D back in the day when it was shareware - the strippers, the pornos playing in the back booths of adult book & video stores, and the raunchy and violent one liners, like "I'm going to rip off your head and shit down your neck!"  lol. This was all new to me in a PC game back then and, well, right up my alley :D

Which is the greatest?
Doom, for being replayable, easy to mod, extensive modding capabilities, a community that won't stop breaking the limits, for making it easier to use on modern machines and providing a healthy dose of maps and mods.

In the times of these games, I loved DN3D much more than Doom. But now - obviously Doom. I voted for DN3D, because this game need some love. :>

John Romero loves Duke 3D, he said it was the best game he had seen when it hit. I can't find the video but it was some European interview/panel/show thing he was on in the past few years. Here's one of several tweets where he says he loves it (just googled it)

I go with Duke Nukem 3D, it's the best for me. But indeed it's underrated in comparison to Doom, mainstream huge hit at the time but a bit cult today, and we are on Doomworld as mentioned.

And Duke 3D has tons and tons of great maps as well, and a great source port (eduke32) that is still worked on. Nothing has as much quantity as Doom, but Duke is right up there in terms of tons of great maps. Quake is also a good answer, and it's cool that the great Scourge of Armagon add-on has Levelord levels, a Duke and Quake connection. And both Duke 3D and Doom have music by Bobby Prince, who Lee Jackson considers his teacher. Tom Hall has worked on both Duke and Doom.

As with all things, I think it's good to focus on what we have in common, being whichever you rank first any Duke fans on here are Doom fans, and we're all fans of 90s 2.5D FPS games, a pretty niche (and glorious) interest.

DOOM.

There's a lot I like about Duke 3D (halfway-convincing locales, great second episode, a few REALLY satisfying weapons; especially that all-important shotgun) but as noted above, it's too clunky overall. Awkward platforming and enemy damage output that seems just a touch too high mean for me it never topped DOOM.

One of these days I'd really like to see a proper conversion of DN3D's levels (not to mention Shadow Warrior or Redneck Rampage) to GZDoom. Of course it'd require finding a solution for those moving sectors first and even then it'd still be a lot of work.

Redneck Rampage

Actually down with this. Although the gameplay (weapons, and again that damage output from enemies can get stupid) left some to be desired, the sense of place/location in RR was top-notch. You could almost smell the musty, grimy alleys and scrapyards and whatnot.
