Battle_Korbi Posted July 29, 2017 (edited) I say two most overused words in titles would be "Hell" and "Space". I know, Doom is mainly composed of these two words, main elements and all. But that doesn't justify it, really. It would be like naming a romantic comedy "Funny Heartwarming" or to name a action movie "Good Guys Kickpunching Bad Guys With Guns And Cars", its just too obvious that it is set in Hell/Space/Hell Space/Space Hell. Whaddya got? 1 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 29, 2017 Using the idgames database interface search function, searching in titles: Doom: 2497 results (to be fair, a number of results are not for PWADs; how many? I don't know, didn't bother to check) Death: 912 Hell: 424 Base: 218 Imp: 132 Blood: 130 Day: 124 Castle: 122 Gun: 114 Kill: 105 Demon: 100 City: 84 Night: 81 Lab: 71 Station: 69 Time: 61 Space: 57 Pain: 55 Fortress: 51 Cyber: 49 Keep: 42 Invasion: 39 Nightmare: 39 Alien: 35 Town: 34 Dream: 30 Vile: 29 Assault: 26 Urban: 21 Attack: 16 Corrupt: 16 Shoot: 16 Gothic: 14 Slaughter: 14 Knee: 14 Infest: 13 Caco: 11 Warp: 9 Journey: 8 Manor: 8 Stronghold: 8 Murder: 7 Travel: 6 Village: 6 Infect: 5 19 Share this post Link to post
Britney_the_King Posted July 29, 2017 (edited) Yeah, hell is in there quite a bit, but Gez just rolled out the search for this one. 0 Share this post Link to post

It's the goto word for titles of techbase maps and therefore also techbase wads with only a single map, and there seems to be a lot of wads that are techbase themed, as well as there seems to be a lot of wads with only a single map. 0 Share this post Link to post
ShoDemo Posted July 29, 2017 What do you mean @Battle_Kirby about Space and Hell being overused? I named my first wad Space Inferno, which is a very unique title! *cough cogh* 0 Share this post Link to post

The Doom equivalent of that would be more like: "Ragequit and Hurl Personal Insults on Idgames" "Hunt Switches, Ignore Barons" "20 Minutes of Tedium, Die at Sudden Crusher Trap" "Oh Look a Custom Prop Forest, RIP Framerate" "Spawn in a Voodoo Doll Tunnel" "Vanilla Map: ZDoom in Hexen Format" Those genres of movies have their cliched titles too, ones that aren't on-the-nose descriptions like that. As far as Doom levels go, you can find common words in silly (Elmer's Glue Base) and not-as-silly creative map names (Blood and Rockets). 'Knee Pain', borrowing two words from Gez's list above, is an appealing title, mundane yet ridiculous. Edited July 29, 2017 by rdwpa 9 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 29, 2017 If I make a map, I'll name it Death Hellbase: Imp Blood. 9 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted July 29, 2017 surprised "tech" or "techbase" wasn't in there. 1 Share this post Link to post

NeedHealth Posted July 29, 2017 I guess that wordplay is under represented. My Nova III contribution I named Dante Allegory. 1 Share this post Link to post

Fun fact: Spoiler I was basically going to name it something like Infernal Dreams or Infernal Void, but there were two problems: 1) The level was not hellish enough. 2) The names were already taken by some kind of death metal bands and I had a hard time in using the word <<Inferno>>. (IT HAD TO BE USED THOUGH!!!) 1 Share this post Link to post
Jaws In Space Posted July 29, 2017 A rather specific map name that I've seen pop up a few times is Hanger 18. 0 Share this post Link to post

I'd thought one rope would do, or do my non-englishness betray me? I mean - I imidently understood that map03 gantlet wasn't a misspelling. Ashley_Pomeroy Posted July 30, 2017 (edited) Someone should release a megawad called Space Death Base: Hell Castle of the Blood Imps. The first map will be called Night City of the Kill Demons. And so on. 1 Share this post Link to post
