A.Gamma Posted December 14, 2017 Right there with Empire Strikes Back as the best Star Wars movies. Lots of unexpected and awesome twists and amazing action. Spoiler I loved it when Kylo Ren killed Snoke, and the battle that followed it. 2 Share this post Link to post
SOSU Posted December 14, 2017 Didn't know that this already came out lol. It's cool that they are continuing the series and that it still looks like Star Wars :) (some franchises like star trek look more like shitty bootlegs than their original versions) Spoiler I loved the part where it was revealed that Darth Vader/Anikin was lying to Luke when he said that he was his father and that his actual father was Jar Jar Binks :O!!! 2 Share this post Link to post
Doominator2 Posted December 15, 2017 Its not fun when you gotta work at the theater opening night of Star Wars Rip... 1 Share this post Link to post

Johnatone Posted December 15, 2017 (edited) Better than VII but meh overall. It was darker and gave a pretty good feel of foreboding, there were a few great moments, some twists to the plot and usual formula, and the visuals were spectacular. However, the action was a bit scatterbrained at times, the plot and dialog seemed more like poorly executed fan fiction, there were some pacing issues (I felt VII had pacing issues as well) and there's an ex machina you're either gonna love or hate. Spoiler My four favorite moments were the parts with Poe's bombing run simply because I love anything with the starfighters, though I didn't care much for the execution (Rogue One handled the fleet defeat concept much, much better; this felt forced); Kylo turning Luke's lightsaber on Snoke (although the visual cue right before it happened sucked all the suspense out, and also we know fuck all about Snoke); the bit where the Admiral used a hyperspace jump to destroy an Imperial dreadnaught - just. fucking. epic. (Made me sad that her character development was so cringe worthy. A lot of this story reeked of high school level fan fiction); and the final showdown between Kyle and Luke. I did not see that coming at all, and the payoff was worth it. Leia getting killed was something I expected but it still hit hard. And then she fucking resurrected herself. Of all the new force related abilities I felt this was just the dumbest ex machina. Her first appearance after her coma was hilarious though. The rest of the new force abilities were actually really cool. The telepathy was cool but the execution again just seemed off; more like something that would be labeled "teen paranormal romance" than anything (yes, that's a real section in physical Barnes & Nobel.) Character development was better, but probably because I was going in with something this time. Another did not see coming moment was the reveal that Rey's parents are dead. It was a huge relief to me that she wasn't part of some prophecy and that kind of returned some of the magic to the force, as did Luke's incredibly well delivered speech about what the force is. It still leaves her character pretty much undeveloped and consisting of pure emotion, which is interesting in a sense. It's a wildcard in the whole thing. The visuals were great and the film seemed cut pretty well until the midway point, where it seemed to kind of jump around different parts but I couldn't honestly get a sense of who was doing what when if you catch my drift. The plot was good in the sense that it was dark and gave you a sense of hopelessness (the bombing run but especially when the shield sabotage went wrong) but the whole "everything happened in 72(?) hours" really relied on the imperials being totally and completely inept to a point that gives me the biggest meh. Most of the humor felt cheesy but maybe I'm too old in that sense. This is all I can recall for tonight but I know I'll watch it again and remember bits as I read this thread. Right now I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. I did enjoy quite a bit of it, but that plot and dialog, ugh. The dialog seemed better than what I recall of the prequels though, heh EDIT: Can anybody else hear nothing but the Joker when Mark Hamill talks or it is just me? 0 Share this post Link to post
WH-Wilou84 Posted December 17, 2017 Didn't like it much, to be honest. Sure, it's better and more inspired than VII and more memorable than Rogue One, it definitely has its moments, but... Spoiler - Too much kid-friendly comedy, right from the beginning. Kinda ruins the tone - or maybe I'm just too old and should stop caring about Star Wars. - Hux's incompetence. If villans are incompetent, they pose no threat. The entire First Order is a joke. - Snoke is a complete waste. We don't know anything about him other than he's a powerful being who likes Hugh Hefner's wardrobe, but prefer to have red guards next to him instead of plastic-filled babes. But on the other hand, the film took me by surprise by disposing of Snoke so early, so it's not so bad. - Rey's lineage.... Huh ? - Luke didn't want to be found and wants to die alone... even though he set up a hidden map in case someone would want to find him in the previous movie. Hmm ? Seems like Rian Johnson didn't care about what J.J. Abrams tried to do in The Force Awakens. Surely, in these big budget production, there's a guy in charge of continuity, right ? - Super-Leia. Oh god, that was ridiculous. Besides, they wasted their only chance to give Leia a proper death, and now that Carrie Fisher is gone for good (RIP), they'll have to give her a lame off-screen death or something. - Luke contemplating killing his nephew. Come on, in VI Luke went to the Death Star because he thought there was still hope for Darth Vader, and here he'd kill a kid just because he has some temper issues ? - The kamikaze lightspeed attack, while being a cool shot, is such an insult to the lore. I mean, now, where's the point of looking for the Death Star's weakness if you could just throw ships at it ? What's the point of the Death Star even, if you could just destroy planets as well by sending ships through them ? - Too much political correctness. - They had Brienne of Tarth on board and they wasted her (like, TWO TIMES IN A ROW). What a complete and utter shame. She's only here to sell toys. - The entire Rose/Finn arc served no purpose in the end. On the other hand, I liked Spoiler the throne room battle, and the visuals when the resistance was trapped on the salt planet at the end. Besides, Kylo Ren is definitely the most interesting character in this new trilogy, and Mark Hamill is still good as an actor. Daisy Ridley did well too. Now I wonder how Abrams will be able to deal with all this and produce something that's not a total disaster. 4 Share this post Link to post

Ichor Posted December 20, 2017 Good movie, but this one thing bothered me: Spoiler Anyone notice that the chase scene inside the salt planet seemed to be a mere recolor of the Death Star interior scene in Return of the Jedi? 0 Share this post Link to post
DMPhobos Posted December 20, 2017 I liked it for the most part, and i think its a good movie, but if i have to elaborate.... Spoiler It's a hard movie to take. Luke its quite out of character, and to be frank i had accepted that until the reveal about what happened on the jedi temple... that's waay out of character and too much for me as a fan of the old movies, even if they justify saying it was just a small moment of fear, i would had expected better of him, and it kinda puts the blame on luke for all the events happening.... and after watching it a second time i realized that the whole OT has been invalidated.... nothing was achieved of it, everything was undone, thats a hard pill to me to swallow, specially considering the place where luke is right now, so this is my main complaint about it (also leia's mary poppins moment was hilarious for all the wrong reasons). the fist half of the movie was very meh, but it picked on later, its a good movie, finn and rose subplot was boring, but everything else was good, i liked how it handled poe's being wrong and learning from its mistakes, i also liked that rey parents were nobodies and that they killed snoke halfway on the movie. Those are some really bold choices for a movie and i really like that they went ahead with them. To sum it up, i liked the last jedi.... but i still im very mixed about how it kinda just screws over the OT 0 Share this post Link to post
Scuba Steve Posted December 20, 2017 The whole Luke death was so utterly pointless... it's like they tried so hard to shoot down everyone's fan theory, they forgot to make a good story. "Luke is going to die... figures" "Oh snap, it was a force projection!" "Oh... he dies anyways." The most wasted, useless death possible. And my sister pointed out that Po Dameron is the exclusive reason that ALL the rebels died in their secret escape. If he had followed the chain of command, EVERYONE would be alive... but then Everyone forgives him and there will be no mention of his failed leadership in the next film.. "Poe is such a leader now!!" 6 Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted December 20, 2017 2 hours ago, Scuba Steve said: And my sister pointed out that Po Dameron is the exclusive reason that ALL the rebels died in their secret escape. Well, yes, but he's also the reason they were all alive at the end of TFA when he destroyed the Starkiller base. It's more that in Star Wars, individual people are responsible for everything. But also the overall theme of the film was one of failure: Finn and Rose fail to find the hacker, and then fail with the backup plan. Rey fails to convince Luke to mentor her, fails to learn anything meaningful about her parents, and fails to turn Kylo back to the light. Luke, until the very end, fails to step up when he's needed (having failed Kylo so badly in the flashback). Poe fails in pretty much everything. I found it a refreshing counterpoint to the overly-cheerful "everyone's a hero!" approach to TFA. I think it'll come to be considered a strong middle-point to the trilogy, in the same way Empire is to the original (despite being criticized for being too dark when it came out). 3 Share this post Link to post
Suitepee Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) A simply amazing film; it left me speechless after viewing it. (not something that happens often!) I loved how it played with fan expectations a couple of times, then twisted it around. (I somewhat agree with Scuba Steve on the Luke thing, but it was still a cool moment when he tricked Kylo like that) I look forward to seeing how in the heck episode 9 will attempt to better this. Lizardcommando Posted December 21, 2017 I watched it last week. It was OK. I feel like the hate for the movie's been way overblown. There were a few things I didn't like though: Spoiler Finn and Rose's story felt so pointless. It really dragged the entire movie down. Finn's suicide run being interrupted by Rose because she loved him or something. Phasma is STILL useless. She did absolutely nothing and her death was pretty lame. What a waste. Leia floating back to the spaceship using "Force Magic" was kinda lame. Snoke died so quickly. I was hoping Daisy Ridley and Kylo Ren would have teamed up to fight him or something. I really didn't care about the Porgs. I kinda wanted Chewie to eat the roasted one just to scare them away. Outside of that, it wasn't bad, but I'd honestly would rather watch Force Awakens or Rogue One again instead of this movie. If there was one moment that I loved, it was when: Spoiler Daisy and Kylo Ren teamed up to kill those Red Guard guys. That was pretty bad ass. I kinda was hoping they'd stay buddies. Maybe in a different movie outside of Star Wars... Oh well. 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted December 31, 2017 (edited) Fantastic episode. The whole movie is about fighting traditions and literally killing the past in order to free yourself and establish your own identity. Just like Kylo Ren, the franchise is finally ready to mature and reinvent itself instead of depending on its outdated foundations. He is an amazing ambivalent villain and the best thing that could have happened to Star Wars. Excellent drama film with insane visuals (wow at the use of color, especially red) and cinematography. 6 Share this post Link to post
seed Posted December 31, 2017 Saw it last night, loved it, and especially how they expanded the character of Ren and explored his relation with Rey, made him ambivalent, and likeable in particular (I must say, I almost ended utterly despising him in The Force Awakens, IF YOU CRY ONE MORE TIME I'LL...). I think a lot of the hate the movie has gained is unjustified, and never really paid attention to it anyway. Totally looking forward to the sequel. 2 Share this post Link to post

insertwackynamehere Posted December 31, 2017 I liked it, but then again I liked all the new Star Wars' and recently I rewatched the originals and prequels with someone who'd never seen them before and I realized that the prequels, while being weak, weren't completely terrible as much as just disappointing given the long wait for them. So maybe I'm not a good Star Wars fan, since I think there's a requirement that true Star Wars fans only like a maximum of 2 movies. 0 Share this post Link to post
Philnemba Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Recently watch it with my wife a couple of days ago & I like it for the most part except for a few nick picks that bugged me. Spoiler - They killed off Admiral Ackbar!? ;_; - The whole casino planet thing to find the codebreaker guy was pretty pointless after he betrays Finn & Rose in Snoke's ship <_< - The whole scene killing off Snoke was both a good twist but terrible at the same time because we STILL don't know who he is however Rey & Kylo Ren VS Snoke's royal guards fight was pretty dope as hell. - Finn vs Captain Phasma fight was a lost opportunity & should've been longer. - Luke Skywalker's death should have been better & more dramatic if he was physically fighting Kylo Ren instead of using that goofy Force projection nonsense. NuMetalManiak Posted January 4, 2018 Spoiler didn't like: -the whole plot hole with the map from the previous movie. Why would the map even exist if Luke came to that island solely to die? -Will agree with @WH-Wilou84, they needed to give Leia a proper death, but her new force power was just ridiculous. And she even lives all the way through the rest of the movie. -the Porgs. I seriously wanted Chewie to eat that roasted one too. At least the ice foxes were cool though. -The Finn vs. Phasma fight was lame. what I liked: -better character development -Holdo. Yeah, she's a hard character to like, especially her alpha bitch tendencies towards our flyboy Poe. Thing is, she's right and he's fucking wrong. And her lightspeed jump through the Supremacy was one hell of a redeeming moment, the silence was quite deafening. -that throne room battle was quite cool too, also the Force fight for the lightsaber splitting it in half. Verdict: This was a movie. 0 Share this post Link to post

Doominator2 Posted January 7, 2018 I saw it, it was ok but honestly its time for star wars just to die, obviously this wont happen though because it brings in to much money and has become the Call of Duty of movies. 1 Share this post Link to post

Totally agree, what I didn't like was that it doesn't look like Star Wars anymore, In the 3 original movies, and even the prequels, which I also liked, there were always epic lightsaber duels at every end and the central figures of the movies aren't even there anymore. What I understand about these new films is just that they are about to kill every "old" characters and make a "new" Star Wars according to their own will. To like those movies, you have to forget about the George Lucas original movies. They will as you said, just continue to make more because it's the label Star Wars and they know they will make money whatever, and just for the sake of it. 0 Share this post Link to post
DooM_RO Posted January 7, 2018 This movie is all style and no substance. It looks like a Star Wars movie but it doesn't feel like one. I'm not sure what to think about Luke. I mean he's always been kind of a manchild but his regressing into this state kinda makes his whole hero quest journey from the original trilogy pointless. In fact, everything he does makes what he did kind of pointless. Surely if he can save his father he can also save the son of his beloved sister and best friend. Mary Poppins Leia. And if you can just hyperspace into a ship to destroy it, why didn't the Rebels do that in the original trilogy? Why did they need the Death Star plans in the first place? Just so stupid as hell. Who the fuck is Snoke? 2 Share this post Link to post
VGamingJunkie Posted January 7, 2018 (edited) One of the worst aspects of the film seems to be that Spoiler they take Luke completely out of character by having him entertain the idea of killing Ben because he senses some potential for evil with him. This is the same guy who showed fairly rebellious and Anti-Jedi traits when he was younger and risked a lot to find the spec of good that existed in Vader. Now, he's going to off someone because he thinks he might become evil one day? Even if he stopped himself, that he would even consider it. And then he dies like a coward. If they were going to kill him off, why even have it be a projection? Seems they botched Luke's character in this movie, hard. Even the actor showed displeasure over the portrayal. 0 Share this post Link to post

pnptcn Posted January 7, 2018 (edited) Spoiler Snoke is a wordplay on smoke, which can be big, scary and lethal but is also thin and substance-less. He's the past and he doesn't matter anymore. There is nothing to know about him because ultimately he is unimportant. He filled a power vacuum within the remnant of a defeated empire that is mauling the galaxy in its death throes. Some thoughts on Snoke in general. Overall I loved it; It was full of surprises, gorgeous camera work, and I thought the goofy humor played nicely against the film's overall dark themes of failure and betrayal. And man those jumpcuts were some of the most Star Warsy jumpcuts of all time. Edited January 7, 2018 by pnptcn : Spoilers and stuff 1 Share this post Link to post
Lizardcommando Posted January 8, 2018 I wanna know who Captain Phasma is and why they toted her as a real badass but she barely does anything in both films. 2 Share this post Link to post
