Is recycling sprites from other mods okay?

It all boils down to one very simple point: it's not okay to use other people's work without their permission. A number of popular mods in recent years have been doing this and the fact that they've set precedent does not make it okay.

Your process should go something like as follows:

  • Check the text file for the mod. Most files on idgames have a "Copyrights / Permissions" section which will say that you can either reuse it or not. Make sure you read carefully in case there's anything special you need to do. Freedoom for example is a special case where you can reuse anything without asking any permission, but you do need to give credit and include a copyright notice.

  • Contact the author. If the permissions are unclear or there's no information, don't assume you have permission, because you don't. Contact the author of the mod and ask if it's okay to reuse it. You will find many artists will be delighted that people want to reuse their work. Similarly, if the text file says "you may not reuse", it may still be worth asking permission. Different people have different concerns - some artists for example are worried about their work being used by people to make money.

  • Respect the rights of authors. If the author says no, don't use their work. If you've used their work without permission and they ask you to take it down, do so. Make sure you give full credit to anyone whose work you've used - the idgames template has an "Additional Credits" page where you can list the names of authors whose work you've used.

You're clearly new to the doom modding scene. Most assets are re-used and recycled multiple times over; as long as the original author of said resources is credited and gave consent.

If you're looking for resources for your map(s) you can import assets from Realm667. :)

I warn you though, be careful with your choices - people get annoyed when wads become "Realm667 showcase wads" - These are most commonly made by newer mappers because they get over excited about all these new toys.

It's always good to ask permission first or track down credits for sprites and items which you want use.

If the mod author allows re-using assets from their mods then it's ok to re-use them, always check the readme file if provided and see if the author allowed re-using them, or ask the author yourself.

And if you do get permission, write an extensive credits text file on who made what, like I did with my Random Deaths & Decoration mod up on ModDB.

Looks a good idea.

All I remember about Realm667 is the MakeHissyHappy thing.
