'The most overrated videogames you've played' thread

Recommended Posts

Sometimes, there are plenty of games that get more credit than they receive. Either you believe a game is good, but not that great, or you can't understand why that game is so high on the sparkling pedestal.

For me, I can't understand what people see in Serious Sam (I only played the first game, so I can't say my thoughts on the rest of the series). For one, the movement is unacceptably slow. Not as in Unreal 2 concrete boots with molasses socks type of slow, but still slow, and it does not work in a game with large open areas. The shooting feels bland, the enemies are purely cannon fodder, and overall the game gets stale and repetitive after 5 minutes. Honestly, if I want fun, I'd rather play Doom's episodes, or Unreal Tournament's practice session matches, where they can and still entertain me for a while.

Doomworld, what are some of the most overrated games you've played?

I think this has been covered before.

To the Moon, Super Meat Boy, Spelunky, Cave Story. Fair games with the exception of To the Moon. I get it... people have lower standards when they can only spend $10 on a game and never owned a console to have played better games. Plus a few of those games started out free. I'd say Super Meat Boy is the best of that bunch because they put in the most effort and I find it the most entertaining. I'm shocked To the Moon hasn't been crucified for being a RPG Maker game with free assets.

Ducktales on the NES isn't nearly as fun as I remembered. Just a quick, easy game that's easily better than most NES games. I just remember it being better and less stupid to control. I was able to speed run it a lot like 20 - 25 years ago in 30 - 40 minutes. Somehow its considered a classic and not shovelware using the Mega Man engine. 5 levels and revisiting one of those levels again as a final level.

Borderlands 2. Anything is fun with friends, that's why they're your friends. DOTA 2. I've been forced to play a lot of DOTA 2 with friends. Its a terrible game. Its tough to go from other games where you're maintaining armies and building stuff to managing a single character... * slow clap *

Mega Man... I think Capcom's publicly released sales figures of its top 50 games cements the fact that Mega Man is overrated. Mega Man 2 sold a million copies... while their modern games sold millions more. Ghosts & Goblins sold about the same amount. Somehow Mega Man has 114 released games according to Capcom with like 32 million in sales. Sounds good until you do that math. Mega Man games are still far better than any other NES games out there. I think people liked Mega Man 2, but that's it, because it had an easy mode. I love Mega Man 2 and even 3. People claim they want a new Mega Man, when no... they just want Mega Man 2.

Sonic 1 and probably the entire franchise with the exception of the cart racers. I get it though... if you own a Genesis, you play it.

Be prepared to crucify me, everyone, but I'm going to say Skyrim. Look, it's a good game, but it's not as amazing as everyone is making it out to be. All the content can be run through with two or three characters and maybe a hundred hours of dedicated playtime, expansions included.

I don't like the player character as Dragonborn. The "soopur speshul" character with unique powers who can only stop the stereotypical doomsday villain has been done to death and then some.

I liked Morrowind's and Oblivion's PC's better, because they were regular dudes who obtained their power over time instead of intrinsically having it, which I find incredibly boring.

The leveling system was cool, but it was too easy to screw up and make a Master of None, which I did no less than three times, by accident, no less.

The Civil War story was absurd to me. The two sides are ignoring the dragon attacks in favor of killing each other. Sure, okay.

In fact, in reference to the super special hero, nearly every questline in Skyrim had you destined to reach the top or equivalent because you're special, not because you actually earn the position.

To me, the lore was the best part, but most of that's been established long before, so that's more damning than redeeming.

I though Doom (2016) was overrated because to me it has zero replay value. It was cool and fun, but there wasn't anything to recommend it after I beat it the first time except for Nightmare difficulty. After that, I've barely touched it at all.

I think we've seen this one coming: CoD and Battefield, because of the "ultra-realism" and the gameplay tropes they always follow and their story over gameplay.

That's all I can think of right now. I'll post later if I think of any more.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter - Boring weapons, annoying enemies, and mediocre level designs. Cool protagonist, at least.

Sonic CD - Short, easy and just not very memorable.

Jedi Outcast - The calibre of writing on display is pathetic, the environments lack detail, the gunplay is sloppy, and the game is generally just kind of bland. Same goes for Jedi Academy.

Phantasy Star 4 - It's alright, but I feel like most of its fans are blinded by nostalgia because they didn't grow up getting to play SNES RPGs.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division - 88% from critics on Metacritic with an 86% rating from users. Excruciatingly awful in every way possible. One of the worst first-person shooters I've ever played.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - I don't remember much about the game, other than the fact that I found it incredibly boring.

You're right about Sonic CD. I played through it the first time I played it after hearing for decades how awesome it was. Nope. It was easy. Only died like 3 or so times. People started telling me how much of the game I missed, but no... I beat the game. Why go back if there was no hint at what I missed. I think it falls into the category of only a few people played it back in the day so the legend grew.

Also with the Serious Sam being overrated... I can't really find anyone more mainstream than Doomworlders talking about Serious Sam. Maybe I just missed the boat or something, but I only hear people talk about DOOM and Duke rather than Sam.

Touhou probably..., i play this only for the difficulty and his music , but the history, theme (of womens fighting with light) and his fandom cause me hating this game, the theme of only womens, it seems to be a porn game

Fortnite, i like the idea of battle royale, but the idea of the building no..., i prefer pubg in this aspect of battle royale

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Serious Sam is overrated. Something about the game just feels off. I can understand some people liking the horde like gameplay, but it's not really my old-school tastes.

Honestly I would say The Second Encounter falls into overrated more than the first. As flawed as The First Encounter was with its enemy encounters and level design, I find the gimmicks and level design in The Second Encounter to be more annoying and dull somehow, and I find myself never getting past 1/3rd of the game compared to TFE where I usually finish a whole playthrough no problem. I find funny how I get bored of levels with more color than just yellow sand and gray walls, though it may have to do with TSE being longer than TFE, which probably made me feel like the game is a drag to play in that sense.

I played the first encounter couple months back, glad it was finished. The engine looks great but the game itself is so shallow.

PUBG, or rather the Battle Royale genre as a whole, I just don't get it, It's so boring you spend over 10 Minutes searching for loot only to get shot from where you least expect it, playing with a friend didn't help either, It's always one of the two of us dies and has to wait for the round to finish, I don't think the reward of surviving a round is worth it, I would rather play something more straightforward and less frustrating, like Classic PvP Deathmatches in small arenas.

What? How does that fucking aberration of a game have positive reviews? I like the concept of it, but it's just flawed in every conceivable way.

man in what world do you live that a game having solely female characters instantly turns it into a porn game? I'm not the most invested in the universe of touhou but i'm pretty sure canon porn isn't exactly a thing.

Different standards back then. A lot of critics loved the game when it came out.

If you feel that gaming is overrated and don't find them fun, why are you on Doomworld then?

Well, that's puzzling to say the least. Still, I probably would've had to be around that time period to understand.

It came out in 1998. By far and away the greatest year for video games.

League of Legends, and the MOBA genre as a whole to some extent. The popularity is mind-boggling considering there is still only one damn map that everyone plays in those games. As someone who played LoL a lot during Season 1, there is no way I can stomach any more Summoner's Rift. If the developers had any ounce of creativity in them, there would have been 10 solid maps balanced for competitive play. But no, let's play the same shit for 5+ years with only minor changes now and then. And then devs have the balls to throw out the comparison to chess. Because a game played for hundreds of years is obviously in the same league as your single-unit RTS that you sell costumes in.

Any other responses from other COD games, beside Modern Warfare, Ajora

Other way around for me. I find the building makes for more fun and interesting fights in Fortnite compared to PUBG.

Ooh boy here's my spicy take - Video Games that are defended as "Good for its time" were never good to begin with. There was simply no other choice at the time, and so mediocre to terrible gameplay was accepted as the norm.

This is part of the reason why I consider most PS1 and N64 titles to be extremely overrated. Games like Tetris, 2D/3D Mario, 2D Zelda, Doom, Quake, Thief, etc. are about as old, if not older than those titles, and yet they still hold up incredibly well.

If you want a specific game/series - every 3D Zelda. I can't find a single thing good about the series that isn't done much better in titles before, during, and after their existence. Even if we stick to 3D, Exploration is done much better in SoulsBorne and 90s FPS (Doom, Quake, Blood, Heretic, Hexen); Combat is done much better in SoulsBorne (+ Severance: Blade of Darkness + Nioh) and 3D Beat Em Ups (DMC, Ninja Gaiden, God Hand, Bayonetta, MGR, Wonderful 101); NPCs and Characters are done much better in isometric CRPGs (Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment) and even ARPGs (Fallout: New Vegas, Vampire: The Masquerade). This is rendered far worse if we allow 2D games into the mix.

Heck, Okami is a better Zelda game than any main Zelda game since it at least has a timeless artstyle and unique combat mechanics.

The only 3D Zelda than I consider good is Breath of the Wild, since it at least has some interesting combat mechanics, and good exploration. It is still nowhere near Okami or any of the other titles I mentioned.

All CoD games after MW2/MW3, Dead Space, GTA V, CS:GO, PUGB, "overrated" being a major understatement in the case of the last two.

*prepares for inevitable crucifixion*

I've mentioned my utter dislike for it before, but I'll mention it again: Half-Life. I just can't see for the life of me how that game is regarded so highly as to be called one of the best FPS games ever. Far as I'm concerned, it suffers from way too many issues to warrant that sort of praise towards it. Half of the game is just an utter pain in the ass - the human enemies do more damage than an elephant in a china shop, the platforming is wonky as all hell, and the puzzles especially suck. Even the story fails to capture my interest despite being a seemingly big part of the experience.

One thing I will give the game credit for, though: some of the weapons are pretty fun, if for no other reason than their quirkiness.

Half-Life

Sir, that's one hell of an opinion and I respect you for voicing it.

I really liked Half-Life because it's a good mix between the modern and classic FPS, I think, while still being a classic.

HL2 was good, but not as good as the first, I think. To me, the best part of HL2 was its engine. I found its gameplay and "puzzles" and gravity gun platforming segments lacklustre at best and irritating at worst.

So I'll put Half-Life 2 on the list. The Episodes were better, though.

As I've pointed out before... Doom isn't a game, its training for the inevitable.

I enjoyed Half-Life 1 a lot, even 15 years after its release when I played it. Opposing Force was enjoyable. Its Blue Shift that felt phoned in, like a vanilla expansion pack that should have been before Opposing Force.

With Half-Life 2, I'd say that it's the one that's overrated. It took me a few hours in to enjoy it. The swamp with the river boat constantly killed my interest. Replaying it forces you to watch the cut scenes, because they aren't cut scenes, when they're in game. You discover quickly how many times you can jump on someone's head.

It was awarded game of the decade? Wow. I remember when it first came out people were up in arms because it forced people to have DRM known as Steam. As overrated as I think Half-Life 2 is, I struggle to find a FPS of that era that's better even if it has less sales than other FPS.

Spelunky

Ooh this one got my hackles up! 😁

As someone who has put hundreds of hours into it (and is married to someone who has put thousands of hours into it) I bristle at the idea that the greatest rogue-like ever created, with more replay value in the base game than anything else I've ever played, is only worth $10. But hey this is a thread for unpopular opinions so I'll refrain from going on an angry rant. Just!

Personally, there's a few recent big games I just couldn't get into: Batman Arkham Asylum, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, and especially any GTA since Vice City (because they're all literally the same).

Red Dead Redemption in particular I just don't understand the love for. It's a bland, empty GTA clone filled with the most cliched, awfully written characters I've ever encountered. RockStar wouldn't know how to write a believable character if one walked into their offices and hit them over the head.

Perhaps you wouldn't have put hundreds or thousands of hours into it if it was a better game. You would have completed it and moved on. Judging from how you feel AAA open world games are overrated, you're probably just conditioned to suffering to the point you need it to thrive on.
