The N64 definitely had a poor library of games. I had the console back in the day and we barely had any games for it back in my youth. Used to have to buy games at discount prices from the video store (the stuff no one was renting). If you ever wonder why the Superman game on the N64 has the fame and notoriety of it's awfulness, it's because anyone who was stuck with an N64 was desperate for more quality games outside of the big hits (Mario, Zelda, Banjo Kazooie and Shadows of the Empire). Even the big hits often were something you either loved or hated. I remember when Donkey Kong 64 came out and putting hours into that game before eventually getting tired with all the collecting stuff. 

 

To make matters even worse is that most of the standout games play better without the god awful N64 controller.

 

All the Star Wars games on it were ported to the PC and play much better, with Shadows of the Empire having animated cutscenes and superior audio quality with it's cuts from the OT soundtrack. Once you play Shadows with the mouse and keyboard, you'll never want to deal with the horrible N64 controller again. Turok could also be mentioned here with it's PC ports. 

 

Even the two Zeldas on the N64 play better on the 3DS where you have a much better joystick and can properly use the top L and R buttons. The touch screen makes for the puzzle items to work better and they fixed a bit of the Water Temple so you don't have to go and get a strategy guide for help with it. Ocarina of Time 3D even added the Master Quest for fans of that game and Majora's Mask 3D greatly improved the time flow and the bomber's notebook to make the side quests easier to keep track of (but they screwed up with some minor things. The newly changed boss fight with Twinmold is absolutely frustrating as hell and a great example of poor boss design. A lot of players hated the change to the Zora swim ability that now uses magic power, and the added puzzles to getting the Fierce Deity Mask were unneeded filler). Almost forgot, the 3D versions look beautiful with newly done textures, updated graphics and the lighting is done better. 

 

Mario 64 was ported to the older DS but I haven't played it to know how it holds up.

It's overrated by DW's standards, I see it get a lot of love whereas it seems Hexen gets the shaft in the deep end, whereas Strife and Heretic are second/third highest rated to Doom.

I enjoyed Bioshock enough to finish it, but I wasn't all that impressed by it overall, and think it's over-rated on that basis.

 

I also don't much care for any Deus Ex game other than Invisible War, because I am the one guy who actually liked that entry in the series.

 

Games that are fairly highly regarded or at least started franchises, that I did not like: Max Payne, The Witcher 2, Mafia, Saint's Row 2.  There are probably others

Seeing Saint's Row 2 come up a lot.

I think I'll have to agree, since I only played it for the awesome cheats it had.

Whatever plot or other crap was going on was blown out of the water by the hysterical cheats I used.

Sonic for me.

As someone who had a SNES and not a Megadrive (Genesis) I was totally into the Mario vs Sonic hype at the time.

Everyone was going on about whether Sonic 1 was better than Mario World etc.

 

Many years later and when I finally played all the Sonic's I couldn't believe it.

That said - I think if you had a Megadrive and not a SNES you would appreciate Sonic more - esp. if it was part of your childhood.

Part of me wishes I got to play it back then - I think when you play a game (in time) has a big say in how you feel about it/remember it.

 

I read online sometimes that some kids don't even rate The Legend of Zelda or A Link to the Past - and that totally blows my mind...!

Really feel lucky to have been a kid/teenager through the 80's and 90's to be honest!

Gotta be Dark Souls 2, Eveyone and their mothers just hyped this game to oblivion as being "DS1 but better"... Yeah having to be forced to level up ADP/Resistance for rolling and dodging is not a good sign and only got worse as I played. yeah having 12 enemies in my ass sure is difficult... but the wrong kind of difficult.

Ended up just putting it aside half way and replaying DS1, twice.

Gonna give it another chance but I will probably not gonna be replaying this game like I did the first Dark Souls

Dark Souls 2 is rather scorned. There is a massive body of criticism levied against the game compared to every other title in the series.

 

Regarding ADP, the only problem I have with it ties into the consistently bad hitboxes of the game. Having a stat that ties into invulnerability frames in one game allows for a different take on heavy builds, effectively increasing the replayability of all titles in the series. You can play Dark Souls 1 if you want to Fat Roll and Backflip your way to victory, and you can play Dark Souls 2 if you want to roll like a maniac while wearing a truck. The issue with this is that if you get hit, it's difficult to decipher whether it's your fault (mistiming a roll) or if it's the bad hitboxes.

 

Also, multiple enemy encounters in SoulsBorne are incredibly well-crafted in every game, except for Dark Souls 2. In every other title, you can play aggressively or defensively, use fast or slow weapons, deal with enemies one at a time or all at once. But in Dark Souls 2, the only choice here is to play aggressively and deal with all enemies at once. This really hurts the options available to a player. There is some interesting enemy placement in Dark Souls 2, but it's hampered by the sheer monotony of it all.

 

With that said, I still suggest you complete the game. Dark Souls 2 still has the most build variety in the series and has some excellent levels and bosses in the DLCs.

Dark Souls 2 is widely regarded as the black sheep of the family, many of the reasons for that are quite legit I think.

 

If anything, I'd say Dark Souls [1] is overrated, at least among the SoulsBorne community.  Yes, it's still a good game. A very good game. Its world design is second to none, and the way different areas interconnect with each other is a stroke of genius. And of course, if you want to understand the story it's best to play the first game first. But the combat and movement feel very clunky and dated after playing the likes of Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne and Nioh. Frankly I just have more fun playing these games, and I feel like a badass when playing them. Say this on /r/darksouls though and you're sure to get a million downvotes.

I feel like I've spent so much time thinking about card game design that I'm meta-qualified to say that Hearthstone is not a good game

yet squillions of people play it and appear perfectly happy to do so, so what the heck do I know lol

There's a whole generation of Zelda fans who were introduced to the series with Ocarina of Time and not the first three games in the series. 

 

Sometimes I believe most of the hate Zelda 2 comes from the younger fans who aren't used to playing the more difficult games, and then they play Zelda 2 for the first time and it totally kicks their ass. IMO Zelda 2 gets too much hate just for it's difficulty.

Interesting list there. I'm glad to see them point out Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. That's the only challenging Metroidvania game since the grinding is mostly useless. 

 

Shocked they put Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn there over Thracia 776, which is agreed by fans to being the most hardest game of the series. But that may be from the fact that few people have played Thracia outside of hardcore fans.

Counter-Strike was mentioned before so I'll add some of my thoughts on it. I've been playing various CS titles on and off since 2002 as my go-to for multiplayer FPS. My main issue with CS:GO right now, and the series as a whole, is that the weapon balance is utter trash once you start playing remotely seriously. That is to say, there are 3 main guns that everybody uses and everything else exists for shits and giggles. I check tournament games now and then and shake my head at seeing CTs running 4 M4s and 1 AWP, while the Ts having 4 AKs and 1 AWP. But apparently people are cool with the game having 3 viable weapons for the past 15 years. I remember at one point, Valve actually made the auto-shotgun good at close-medium range, which was quickly reverted as the M4/AK boys couldn't handle another weapon having an advantage in close quarter combat. Also, adding predictable recoil is utter crap. You were never supposed to spray your guns in the series, because naturally the bullet spread becomes unpredictable. Now you just fire your AK at full-auto in a T-shape and it's basically accurate. No. Just no. I couldn't care less about optional cosmetics and "market economy", but it's the fundamental gameplay aspects in the current state of Counter-Strike that keep me from coming back.

I actually enjoyed Invisible War despite some of it's flaws. Personally, it had some neat ideas but some of the design decisions are poor. And the optimization is a pain that while it has most of the issues addressed with the Visual Upgrade patch, still crashes from time to time. Had it been worked on more, as well as made for PC first and with larger open levels, it could've been better.

I played Counter-Strike (and Half-Life) heavily in high-school and it kept me going during dark periods in my life. I don't really play it anymore but the times I had with the beta, 1.6 and Source are near and dear to me and join a number of games that kept me from doing something drastic when it felt like I had nothing. I know that probably sounds strange to some especially considering CS in particular due to its infamous community but the toxicity of certain people online has never bothered me. I'm not really scared or threatened by internet crybabies telling me they'll skin my mom alive and rape my sister (true story). After I have my fun egging them on further so they maybe perform worse I'll just mute them.

 

I guess while I'm here and in a good mood I'll add my own squirt of piss to this soiled pool.

 

I think most Sierra point and click games have good and sometimes hilarious writing but are filled to the brim with bullshit game design.

I think RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is ugly garbage and you can't even kill your annoying bitchy guests in horrible ride accidents so 0/10.

I think Turok is ugly and boring, and I think Turok 2 is ugly and frustrating.

I think Quake 2 is too safe in its game design, and feels like trotting along in one giant boring tech base.  (Also: unbalanced as fuck.)

I think Q3 lacks substantial interesting content and mechanics and as a result I'd compare it to eating dry toast with a glass of tap water. I also hate the art direction.

I think Shadow Warrior '97 feels like shit to play and is filled with annoying design decisions. Don't care for the protag either and each exp. pack gets worse.

I think Strife is innovative as hell, and boring as fuck.

I think Half-Life: Opposing Force has too many clashing elements that make it come off as a cheap fan-fiction. Plus the ally AI feels even dumber somehow.

I think Saints Row 2 has some of the most cringy voice acting and characters that make me want to drive screwdrivers deep into my ear canals.

I think Sonic 1-3 is just a bunch of conflicting game design with a fuck the player attitude.

I think Serious Sam has an annoying... everything. (See also: Painkiller)

I think PUBG and Fortnite, and really all these fad shooters are annoying cash grabs designed for attention whores. (PUBG specifically because the dev is a total crybaby.)

I think Duke Nukem 3D has lost a lot of its charm and most of the enemies are annoying to fight. Good weapons though!

I think Hotline Miami 2 took itself too seriously and its ending ruined any intrigue or shred of caring about the plot on my end at all.

I think POSTAL 2 has lost its bite years ago, and the only reason people still love it despite being an ugly mess is because there's nothing else like it.

I think HuniePop is boring garbage and I probably missed the point or something.

I think Gone Home is artsy fartsy non-sense.

I think Life is Strange is one of the worst most cringy adventure games I'd ever seen.

Rise of the Triad '13... Jesus Wept.

I think Dungeon Keeper 2 is okay but Dungeon Keeper is superior by far.

I think Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is at points interesting but mostly bland. (Much like Assassin's Creed)

I think Return to Castle Wolfenstein is great the first half and falls apart by the second half.

I think Wolfenstein: The New Order has some of the worst writing I've heard, I LOATHE their vision of BJ, and I hate the absence of supernatural elements.

It's marketed as a survival horror game so as a fan of the genre I expected one. Instead I got a boo-fest haunted house ride that thinks throwing gory sentient blobs my way that make loud noises is scary. It's not the worst game ever but its fans praise it to high heaven for being a gem in the survival horror genre. Honestly I found playing through Alone in the Dark more tense and that game is from 1992 and has hilariously aged models.

Earthbound. Yeah, I said it. Strip away the mystique surrounding the game and you're left with a pretty bog-standard RPG with some neat quirks, but some really annoying design choices too, even for the 90's. The SNES had many far superior RPG's even in Europe where we didn't get most of the Squaresoft stuff until the PS1 era.

Unreal Gold. This was a game that I missed out on back in the day, however, I kept hearing good things about it. I downloaded it in a heartbeat when I found out that it was free on Steam. I was pumped! Unfortunately, I simply could not get into it. I was underwhelmed.

Mine would probably be Mega Man 2. I didn't enjoy it too much, but people kept praising it as 'one of the best NES classics of all time'. Especially Quick Man. I hate him. The only thing that kept me going to play the game was my frustration and the thought of 'maybe it'll get better'. I didn't continue at all.
