hardcore_gamer Posted September 8, 2018 I think the problem is that he simply had no idea how many wads would be submitted and did not know how big of a bite he would have to chew. I knew this would happen last time and it did. This time he decided to make a 1 map only rule which was a step forward but I knew it would backfire and that people would just make single extremely long maps instead. And they did. It also doesn't help that only a small portion of the maps are actually interesting and that the rest are just generic beginner maps. I believe he mentioned on one of the streams that he would make a time limit of about 10 min per map if there was another contest. 0 Share this post Link to post

I'd like to see you almost single handedly play through 300 maps that range anything from 10 minutes to an hour whilst also working shifts and having a personal life outside of modding Joel. Yeah, I agree the contest became bigger than we anticipated but calling it silly because I wanna get as many wads done as possible rather than play one for an hour is just stupid. 2 Share this post Link to post

Except size does not = length. size can be bloated due to the textures involved, new enemies, weapons, items, anything. I know for certain that one persons map is one of the larger ones, and his map is only about 15 minutes long. And for your information, i'm not calling the contest 'silly' i'm calling the management of it poorly executed, but not silly. 0 Share this post Link to post
hardcore_gamer Posted September 12, 2018 (edited) I would laugh so hard if the EU (remember that Joel lives in Sweden) actually blocked him and his streams before he was even able to finish the contest. Then I would probably crawl over into the corner and cry. Oh, and I think it's fair to conclude that there won't be a Doom contest 3 next year. Or any Joel streams. 0 Share this post Link to post

People always go crazy over these internet laws but not not much ever actually changes. I'm not saying it's good what the EU is doing, it's disturbing, but people always overreact and think it'll be the end of the internet as we know it. 0 Share this post Link to post

I don't want to derail this thread by turning it into a thread about the EU article 13 since I believe there is already a thread about it on everything else. Just go to that thread and read about it, and you will know that this is no overreaction. 0 Share this post Link to post

Fair enough, I agree there are some large files that contains short maps with lots of extra stuff thrown in there. I do throw in some large maps too, don't get me wrong. I don't only play the smallest files and go from there. As for the management, that's really beyond my control... However, like someone else said in this thread, Joel doesn't want to ONLY stream Doom wads until the contest is over. It'd take a lot of streams and both Joel and the audience would get burnt out on them. The contest turned out to be bigger than we expected but we've learned from it and if there's another contest it'll be managed better. With that said, I'm pretty sure the contest will be over soon as there aren't that many wads left. 2 Share this post Link to post
DFF Posted September 12, 2018 @Anthropophagus89 sorry to bug you here but there hasn't been a doom stream in a while, how many WADs are actually left to play (not necessarily approve)? also just to placate my longing multi-month fear, was a WAD called innyume-doom approved? under Gordong_freeman? 0 Share this post Link to post

My numbers might be out of date, but I believe Joel has streamed about 80-90 maps so far. Anthropophagus said around 300 have been submitted, they've reviewed around 250, and excluded about 27. So once they've finished reviewing all 300, we're looking at about 260 ish total maps. So that's about 180 more to go: in other words Joel's about 1/3 of the way through. 0 Share this post Link to post
DFF Posted September 12, 2018 lol, if so then we got a while to go, ah well XD 0 Share this post Link to post

And on top of that he isn't streaming the contest anywhere near as often anymore meaning it could actually take him ANOTHER WHOLE FULL YEAR to finish this contest at this rate. It's actually legit possible that he won't even be able to finish the contest before article 13 comes into effect in omg what the fuck. lmao 0 Share this post Link to post

DMPhobos Posted September 13, 2018 Joel mentioned that he had played around 150 and that about 60 were left in today stream, didn't noticed that a stream was up since twitch didn't notified me about it 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) Thanks for the notification DMPhobos. Link above for convenience. 1 Share this post Link to post
hardcore_gamer Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) So he finally played my wad. It starts at 1:25.19 and is called FEAR. The wad was a failure of what it was suppose to be overall but at least he appeared to like it while it lasted. He even said "you were so close to winning" at the end, though it's possible he was just joking. Still at least he appeared to like what was actually made while it lasted. DMPhobos Posted September 13, 2018 Im pretty sure it was just a joke remark after the non serious message at the end Anyways, there were some legit maps, the casino map looked really fun and i really liked the stronghold 'Gold needed!' voice reference hehe, there was a stanley parable parody level, but i kinda feel it needed some impact sounds since it relied a bit too much on reading but it wasn't that bad. Also Poohlyash level looked pretty good and fun, definitively a highlight. Overall a good wad stream imo, too bad there was another really long map were joel more or less lost his patience and nocliped to finish, but otherwise i think there was some good stuff in there, if anything the last wads teased at the end of the stream looked really promising, really looking forward to them, specially since one of them (Soundless mound) could get a separated stream 0 Share this post Link to post
hardcore_gamer Posted September 13, 2018 Fun fact: There's well over a hundred custom models (all of whom were made from scratch) in the actual pk3 but only a portion appear in the level because I ran out of time D: 0 Share this post Link to post
Marisa the Magician Posted September 14, 2018 I really hope he does enjoy my map. I put a lot of effort into it even though I wasn't doing very well health-wise at the time. 3 Share this post Link to post

Generally most of the wads on stream have a newbish quality or have some inside jokes or humor, but even then a great map pops in once in a while. They wont be released to the public until the contest is over, but some maps have been released at the moment. Some personal highlights that have been released from the top of my head.... Spoiler The crypt by ronniejamesdinnerDeviled by Mysterious HarukoStarlight Sanctuary by insanity bringerMidiville by JimmySoundless Mound by MarisaKirisame...Artic Outpost by me There are also some great maps that have been featured on stream and haven't been made available yet, and joel still hasn't played Dobu's map, nor Dragonfly's, Mechadon's, and Stormcatcher's map, so im keeping an eye for the time they come on stream 5 Share this post Link to post
dobu gabu maru Posted October 3, 2018 Thanks for keeping us updated when streams are on DMPhobos, I appreciate it. I suspect myself and some of the others have yet to see their maps because Joel looked at our file size and NOPE'd over to the smaller maps. 2 Share this post Link to post

Pretty much yeah. Dragonfly asked basically that to one of Joel's mods and they confirmed they hadn't looked at his map yet because it was a big file size. 1 Share this post Link to post
