Does anyone else find Doom 3 mediocre?

Recommended Posts

I think Doom 3 starts and ends great, with the Mars City levels at the beginning and the Hell and cavern levels at the end, but gets repetitive in between, which backs up some of the above comments about its length.

It would be more fondly remembered if it was relatively easy to make good maps for a la Doom II, in which case many people would fondly recall its custom maps.  However, by Doom 3 we were already getting to the time when it was very hard for one person to create levels that came close to the level of detail of the levels in the original campaign, and the more successful mods tended to be few and far between and produced by dedicated mod teams.  The collapse of Doom3World.org and its mine of information on Doom 3 mapping also didn't help.

I know that I'mjust sharing a little fun fact but I can see your confusion in what I was saying and promise to say it more clearly next time.

Have a good day! :)

Well to be fair quite a few games from that time were also linear, Half Life 2, Halo CE and to an extent even Far Cry.

Halo CE and Far Cry weren't linear.

It's like Half-Life Mars Edition I kind of like that, I have a thing for slow-paced exploration games with methodical approach to finishing levels. Zombies take more shots to kill but that's about the only issue I can think of and even then it's not a major issue, oftentimes I just switch to Chainsaw to clear a corridor of melee zombies, just have to get used to it. I dislike the way you get security codes for lockers and sometimes even crucial points for progression, have to listen to a whole audio log just to get that 3 digit code, I understand the game's pacing is slower than other Doom games but this just kills the pacing alltogether for me, and I don't like how the screen goes crazy when I'm getting shot or hit by melee monsters (esp lost souls), feels cheap to not be able to fight back, it's not the scariest game ever made but I just ignore that and have fun.

I'll have to make a map for it sometime later after I'm done with that 64EX map, I hear the editor is quite similar to Hammer. Here's your friendly bouncy boi (FOOF... FOOF... FOOF... FOOF...)

Mediocre? Not really. Mediocre implies that it is a 5/10 across the board. Doom 3 had cutting edge technology and a stunning, if limited, art design that still holds up today. The game has aged very gracefully. What drags it down is the below-average gameplay, predictability and the fact that for some mind-boggling reason the game decides to give you more Mars just when it got more interesting, meaning when you got to Hell.

Doom 3 is a good but terribly flawed game that could have been truly great.

I like playing Doom 3 a lot, there are some rough edges that could be better, like the other comments already mentioned, but it is a good game.

Playing Doom3 roe without using the artifact unless specifically necessary to progress (basically only for the slow time puzzles in the beginning ) makes the game so much better.

Besides, I'm pretty alone in this opinion but I felt like the hell level in Doom3 was the weakest part of the game.

I tried to play it like that, but ran out of ammo when fighting revenants in that reactor level (the one with the circular walkways joined by lifts, and the big cylinder in the centre).
