The "FREE" Games Thread

Recommended Posts

Since I like The "Fresh Game Deals" Thread back from the ZDoom Forums, I decided to do one here. But before any posting "FRESH" deals, you'll need to read the rules in the spoiler below.

Spoiler

Rules:

1. Games must be "no strings attached." This means no prerequisites or hoops such as like-farming, share-to-download, surveys, etc.

2. No abandonware, warez, grey-market, or anything else that breaks forum rules.

3. No freeware, unless it just recently went free and hasn't been posted before.

4. Stem, GOG, Epic Games Store, Humble Bundle, or developer-dire deals are trusted and preferred.

5. Post the expiration date of the deal, if any. If it's a Steam free weekend, say so.

6. No key giveaways. Make a separate thread for those that.

7. No reposting a game unless it's a fresh deal.

8. Keep chatter / discussion to a minimum, and preferably directly related to the deal.

Now we got the rules out of the way, I can show you my example in the spoiler below: (You don't have to put a spoiler.)

Spoiler

Is it okay if I post this here? Steam's Off Topic forum has a Free games/Giveaways thread you guys can check out. It's updated regularly.

Of course you can, and nice "Persona" profile pic too.

There are far too many free games.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_PC_games

There are plenty of game jams with brief, but quality free games.

I remember a thread years ago about someone explaining free games are meaningless and there was time where any free game wound get tens of thousands of downloads, but now you can talk about a free game til you're blue in the face and no one will care. Throughout the thread, he sprinkled mentions of his free game and how the thread had more posts than he had downloads.

There was also an article from the maker of You Have to Win the Game being free and getting lots of downloads vs Super Win the Game getting very little sales, but that's free vs paid.

Classic indie game made by Arcane Kids before they made the fever dream known as Sonic Dreams Collection.

Nerdcubed also made a Youtube series of free games years ago. Great source for free stuff, though the series is really old so some games may not be downloadable anymore via the links I'm assuming.

My favourite creator of free games is probably "Locomalito". Check out his website for absolute treasures like Hydorah or Malditta Castilla:

I love his games! Hydorah is definitely one of the best shmups I ever played. There is also Curse of Issyos, a very decent Castlevania clone.

The game with the element of gamble from Drakemall. I checked all reviews on drakemall.info, it's a win-win game where you can get cool items in any case amost for free. Awesome game for those who like gambling from time to time.

Why is there a picture of Slender Man on that Marathon page?

Because it's not Slenderman :) That's a S'pht Compiler, one of Marathon's enemies.

GRID 2 (Steam version) is free until March 17.

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/grid2-spa-bathurst#checkout-section

The bundle also comes with 2 DLCs:

- Bathurst Track Pack

- Spa-Francorchamps Track Pack

There's also another free DLC for GRID 2 that's not on Humble Bundle:

I also just found out that Reddit also has subreddits for free games:

Dwarf Fortress, now if I could only learn HOW to play

Install the newbie pack that comes with a few tilesets so you don't have to look at the ASCII, It comes with mods that add -some- mouse control too. Of course this doesn't solve the biggest problems which are the GIGANTIC user interface and fps dropping to 0 if your world isn't insanely optimized. Of course the game doesn't really have a goal, you just simulate your dwarves and make them do whatever you want, including dying.

They are currently working on a premium version for steam that adds an official tileset and soundset https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/

Maybe this will encourage the devs to fix the user interface or implement work arounds at least.

On-Topic : GRID2 is free on humble bundle for a couple of days, direct link in spoiler (I think it needs subbing to their news service, but you can unsub afterward or use a fake email:

Edit : humble gives 3 steams keys for GRID2, 2 of which are dlc. Of course the keys expire once the giveaway is over so be sure to redeem them before it is too late. (Direct download is possible too if you don't have a steam account)

Morrowind is free for a day: https://bethesda.net

Coincidentally Bethesda.net seems to be suffering some problems, so that free thing may or may not depend on their site.

People should look into the Morrowind Sounds and Graphics Overhaul mod, also there were some free official plugins/DLC for this game which wasn't included on the GOTY edition. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Plugins They are no longer offered on the official website but this wiki fortunately saved them.

So it's only temporary and you don't own the game afterwards?

You're probably correct. Steam usually does a lot of free to play free to keep games, but it's a temporarily free game.

Isn't the deal that you have to download the game while it's free and then it stays in your inventory?
