Empyre Posted November 30, 2017 (edited) That first picture looks like a hospital hallway that ends with a HOM. 6 Share this post Link to post
The_MártonJános Posted July 13, 2018 Last year, I moved to the second floor of a condominium. This "beautiful" structure of a set of stairs is right opposite to the entrance to the forefront into the stairwell/elevator shaft. I know it seems disgusting 'n' stuff, and I can reassure it is. Hungarian sanitary maintenance have never been the greatest at all, and note that the building it is in is like, 40-something years old. A different angle shot. And I don't know about you, but despite its major aesthetical faults, I find something especially intriguing about this "stairbay". Note the "awry" piece of wall that doesn't reach up to the ceiling at all, and functions as railing instead. There is something that, in a twisted way, outright yells "Doom architecture" about this weird establishment for me. 7 Share this post Link to post

That looks a lot like the Nova Prospekt levels from Half-Life 2, but when I think about it, those levels would fit Doom nicely too. 5 Share this post Link to post

stochastic Posted July 13, 2018 If you couldn't tell from my avatar, I'm a huge Twin Peaks fan. So naturally, a map inspired by the mysterious Black Lodge would make me fanboy pretty hard. Without going into spoilers for those who haven't watched the series, the Black Lodge is a surreal, hellish dimension inhabited by malevolent spirits and illusions. The Lodge contains endless red rooms (like the one pictured below) connected by red curtained hallways. The rooms all appear to be nearly identical at first, save for a few details (furniture in some, blank space in others, some well-lit, others with erratic strobe flashes), which causes great confusion and a growing sense of dread for the wanderer (Have I been in this room before? Where is the exit?). But each room contains its own demonic presences that cause the wanderer to see visions from his/her past to relive in horror. A personalized hell, so to speak. And deep in the realm of the Black Lodge exists the wanderer's evil doppleganger; a shadow self. God help you if your doppleganger finds you within the labyrinth. So how could this translate to a Doom level? Well, the architecture may be rudimentary mapping (virtually the same room and connecting hallway repeated ad nauseam) but I could see this map being a surrealist, terror-filled nightmare. Possibly an Arch-vile maze? A foreboding gauntlet in which some rooms are left empty, while others contain hellish traps and trials? and/or a journey that slowly builds to an encounter with Doomguy's own shadow-self (possibly in the vein of the Mr. X map from Scythe 2). I see a great opportunity for someone to create a legitimately suspenseful horror map. Now, if only I were a mapper... ;) 3 Share this post Link to post

Here are some more examples from Noisy Le Grand, Paris France. On 8/14/2018 at 8:32 PM, Phoby said: Ahh yes, the famous Windows XP green hill. That grassy knoll inspires us all. The_MártonJános Posted August 17, 2018 (edited) Condominium volume 2 - turns out moving in there was actually a real good idea in this aspect! I gazed upon this building - a panel condo with its own respective yard - on my regular way to my new workplace. I couldn't say less, I just adore those gang corridors. 'Course redoing this in Doom in its full glory is impossible (without advanced 3D floor trickery, that is), but it's still perfect inspiration material I believe. Same building, other side. I dare to say this one is even better. In the rural area there is a small middle yard with cobblestones and underpasses like this on both ends: Shame I cannot capture it full because of the partial park forestation. However, it adds a perfect mood to it so I shouldn't be complaining I guess. The following picture is the underpass on the other side. Note (but not pictured) that the building extends upwards a solid seven whole floors from this point on. Finally, the entrance which is closest to my apartment, complete with these... what are they supposed to be in the first place, I have no idea? Oh well, might as well start to work on making some sprites at this point. Here's what the condominium I live in looks like from the outside. It also has underpasses, though they're not that nice: But why do I have the feeling that the layered ceiling is something Doomish? Certainly, this place has to do something with area design. Other side. The multi-corridor I think is a nice touch of architecture if you ask me. Finally, something from the city near my previous hometown: A circular, upwards-spiraling, covert car driveway which allows vehicles to get up and park on top of the local shopping centre. (In case you're wondering - the video in this post was shot inside the same institution.) Wider view. Sadly, I couldn't snap where it goes up to the roof. Maybe next time. OK, that is it for today. If only one of the current twenty thousand members on Doomworld replica anything from here, this post was very well already worth made. Edited August 17, 2018 by Cell 3 Share this post Link to post
Martin Howe Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) "In Hell, even the rocks bleed!" Who'd have thought RSPB Minsmere could provide inspiration for Doom :P For the historically minded, these are tank traps, so a genuine military connection here :) 2 Share this post Link to post
