What was the first custom wads you have played?

Recommended Posts

The first custom wad I remembered ever playing was Nintendo Doom. It was a simple graphics wad that changed all of the weapons and enemies to random Nintendo themed characters. It was crude, but funny.

The first megawad I ever played was Memento Mori. I remember being blown away by those long bridges in MAP02.

The first weapon/gameplay mod I remember playing was Twilight Warrior for Doom Legacy. It was cool seeing a "realistic" tactical shooter in Doom. I remember it being really difficult though.

It's hard to remember the exact very first one that I ever played since I was a literal kid at the time, but there's a good chance it may have been All Hell is Breaking Loose -- it was a real "Holy McFuckShit you can make Doom do that?" sort of moment, and is definitely partially responsible for my semi-crippling 20-ish-year addiction to the game. :P

(before someone asks, I discovered end1.wad just slightly later. ;P )

Hmmm, hard to say. But one of the very first PWADs I've ever tried back then was Aliens TC.

That had to be Scythe in first place, like three years ago. Also, if my memory serves me right, back in my high school days when I somehow got Doom to play (would be around 10 years ago, and again since childhood), I looked for videos in Youtube that showed how to get all the secrets, and stumbled upon a playthrough of "Fear" aka Scythe map 26. I was horrified by the apparent violent difficulty and walls of monsters all over the place but amazed by the simplicity the player was handling them, of course not enough for me to try it out by myself, I rather preferred to stick to the original levels. And at that time I wasn't quite sure about what I watched, I had no idea "pwads" or "mapping community" were a thing, even though I did know about Doomworld, none of that was in my radar as far as custom levels for Doom go.

However, the pwad I finnished first was Plutonia 2, because it was more in line with what I was looking for gameplay-wise. Scythe was okay but the first levels bored me and quite after map 06, I wanted an adventure, something hard and fearsome as Plutonia and lengthy to stay no less than 30 minutes on each map like TNT (at that time, of course). Eventually I went back to Scythe with a more opened mind and enjoyed it once I got to the second half. In between I played wads like Requiem and Memento Mori which both have several short maps so I learned to digest the small bites too.

Sunder - first got me interested in classic doom at all.. seeing the mapset on a Twitch stream and going "holy shit this looks awesome" (Believe the map was The Furnace :p )

Sunlust - Played this wad 2nd as it was highly recommended and after the pwad intro with Sunder figured it wouldn't be much harder.. but it was quite different in gameplay :D

As far as I remember the 5 very first user-made megawads I've played were:

Alien Vendetta

Scientist 2

4000 Monsters

Unit 9042 (1+2, at the moment the 3 wasn't released)

BattleField (just an arena map with friendly Marines vs Demons)

Simpsons Doom takes the very first spot. The 95 era version. There are many Simpsons quotes that are stuck in my head thanks to that wad alone.

Bermuda and Doomsday were among the first single map wads I played (Or at least, the first ones that stick out in mind)

Dark Covenant, Beyond Doom and Artifact being some of the first mapsets I played

Icarus and Memento Mori were my first megawads.

Hmm. I think it was 2002ado. I was blown away at how awesome it was back then. I was mainly blown away by the fact that you could play custom stuff too and that there was quite a big pool of content available already.

I'm pretty sure the first custom WAD I ever played was Scythe2. I remember being blown away at the design of the first few levels, especially compared to the vanilla game. I got to about map 13 or so then moved on to hell revealed but never finished it.

I actually had Nintendo.wad which Lizard Commando is talking about in the first post, but for some reason it really scared me back then. I look at it now and have no idea why, no other wads had that effect on me..

Here's all the WADs I was enjoying before 2000 rolled around (all for Doom 2):

For some reason I had a few deathmatch wads, DM wads used to have monsters though so I always enjoyed exploring them:

(I'm not gonna bother linking dwango5)

I also LOVED mods based on cartoons. I know I'm forgetting a few, but these gems were the highlights of Doom modding as far as little me was concerned:

https://doomshack.org/uploads/simpsn2i.zip - Simpsons Doom 2

https://doomshack.org/uploads/southparkdm.zip - South Park Doom

https://doomshack.org/uploads/doom2z98.ZIP - DBZ Doom 2

^ Each of those also has a Doom1 version that is quite different from the Doom2 version, which is really cool imo. Not just lazy repackaging!

... I was pretty lucky overall - before I knew how to reach out and start interacting with the community, mapping, and deathmatching, almost all of the wads I came across were really good for the time. The idea of totally unplayable shitty 1994-esque shovelware wasn't even a thing to me.

A friend of my dad's gave me the Doom Heaven for Doom 2 CD around that time, but since I couldn't get it to work, I was "spared" the proper shovelware experience til later when my brother got it working.. Earlier times, man!

I even remember some of the sites where I found these wads..

Little trip down memory lane.

FAVA BEANS, if anyone can remember this...
I remember the name because of the reference to Doc H. Lecter, but I can't remember any maps or gameplay...

I think mine was Eternal. Can you imagine going from doom 2 to straight up Eternal back in the day? That was an experience.
